both have dedi.servers but ranked is given priority
ranked uses true skill, social doesn't
ranked starts with 10 real players
ranked lets you choose what map to play
can't join ranked matches.

All matches both ranked and social are on dedicated servers, however ranked gets priority. So if space is limited then social matches go P2P. However when there are available servers, all matches take place on dedicated servers, so neither will have host advantage.

Both will go to P2P should servers go down.

Ranked is usually more competitive and you are more likely to run into pre-mades in Ranked.
