Gears of War 3 Console and Unlockables

Hey I am buying the gears of war 3 limited edition xbox and was wondering what to do about my saved data. I have the veteran gear achievement and the beta saved unlockables on my old xbox (the fat one). My friend told me that I should first play gears 3 on my old xbox and get all of the unlockables and then recover my account on the new xbox and i will still have all of the weapon skins. Can anyone confirm this that I will be fine by doing what my friend told me or will i have to transfer my memory with a xbox hard drive data transfer cable first. Thanks.

Just grab a usb stick and move all the savegames/profiles to that.
