Forum Upgrade

As you are probably aware, next Tuesday will mark the launch of one of the biggest games of the year, Gears of War 3. In order to ramp the forums so they are ready for launch, we will be upgrading them sometime today (9-14) or tomorrow (9-15).

The forums will be down for at least a few hours, and there will be a few noticeable changes and some missing features/themes when the forums return. We'll be working to return everything over the next few weeks.

I am liking the new layout for Gears3

but I still wish we had a designated spot for Gears1. Would it be wrong to make the Gears2 forum into the Gears1 and2 forum?? Im sorry if im being out of line i have not visited the Gears2 forums much since the beta.

its also kind of weird how the GearsPC is a Sub-forum inside of TitleUpdates?? I dont think they update any games now besides Gears3... maybe we can change the Subforums under Gears2? other then that i like the new arrangement for the multiple forums for Gears3

The forums will be upgraded tomorrow morning folks. We will be down for approximately 5 hours. I'll try to get us back ASAP but there is lots to do!

So, the forum has become harder to browse casually, with information thrown all over the screen and separated by tabs and fields instead of being packed nicely, plus wide horizontal gaps between each post, and worse of all, the black+reddish visual scheme that is a constant challenge to eyes (and yes, dark red color is harder to read on white, too - that is absolute basic of color usage, hello?)
Sure, your forums - your rules.
But how about an option to customize the colors, at least?

PS I will stop being annoyed when my eyes stop hurting from the red on screen. And I mean it. I feel pain in my eyes as I type this - and I do not feel pain while typing in notepad or other non-red environment, for experiment's sake.
Please think about it guys, because many of us at UDK section did not deserve/ask for this, ahem, visual punishment.

I like this new theme, but there are a few things that could be improved.

First of all, in the Quick Reply and Reply to Thread windows, all of the buttons are empty.
Second, when you type in your username, it appears as dark grey text on a black background, which is kinda hard to read.
And lastly, the forum seems to need a lot longer to finish loading. It keeps saying "Waiting for forums.epicdev.net" for about five minutes after everything else is loaded.

Other than that, I really like the new look of the forums.

Finally, I don't have to worry about white text on black burning my eyeballs inside out.

I agree, this new theme feels awkward to me. Pure white background in the area where you read most of the time tires the eyes enormously and hurts.

Pretty much every other forum that I browse handles it the opposite way with white text on dark background. Some others utilize a grey background, which is still very good and might be an idea for the Epic forum as well. You are not doing your fans and potential customers a favor if you ignore one of the most basic web design rules.

I already preferred browsing the UT2k4 forum here instead of the UDK forum because the latter already had such an awful color theme while the other had a nice dark blue and a really nice looking header. Now even the header is gone and you can't tell immediately in which forum section you are after using Google. Maybe I landed in the UT3 section without knowing it.

EDIT: And the smileys got apparently also worse.

I agree. While I do like the colour scheme, I don't like the white background. Staring at a white background while you read is like staring at a light bulb.

I seem to be having a hard time with searching the forums for a specific thing. Such as 'spline or spline component', or anything.
All I get now since the forum upgrade when using advanced search is that no posts can be found. :S

It's extremely hard to read sample codes on the UDK forums with this new color scheme. You have the black code box and the dark gray text inside it? The only way to read it is by selecting all the text and that's extremely annoying.
