It's like when someone plays as Raam in Gears of War 2 online. You know they beat Raam in the first Gears of War on at least Hardcore. The same applies to the unlocks of Lt. Kim or A. Carmine. And when I would play and see someone with a Gold Lancer I believed them to be dedicated to the series because they either bought the Limited Edition, or won it from an Epic contest. In either case, their loyalty was reflected by their weapon skin.
When I saw a Gold Hammerburst during competitive or Horde, I would literally watch that player for a bit. Regardless of a Midnight Madness or contest give out, I knew that the extreme rarity of that skin meant significance to the dedication a player had to the game. Likewise, when you see players with Rank 100 still playing the multiplayer it impacts you that they enjoy the game that much to continue playing at peak rank. Rather than riding a Brumak to hit Seriously 2.0, some people would still rather play competitive or Horde modes, and the rank and gold weapons reflect a mutual appreciation between gamer and game developer.
I know that sounds stupid and simple, but obviously the games that try to reward community and legacy are the ones that resonate more with the gaming audience. Halo, Uncharted, and Gears are three very big games that reward their fans with legacy unlocks, saying thank you for having played their previous titles. It seriously is appreciated to know that the developers value our loyalty by making a special unlock that other gamers can see, and it tells a story about us -the gamer- without having to even vocalize it. You know who played what games, or what edition they own by certain unlocks; flaming orange helmet [Halo], custom gold weapons [Gears], or even a special baseball outfit [Uncharted]. This stands out, and makes other players notice, even envy, the exclusives. And, from a business stand point, it encourages new players to go back to previous entries in the series, if only for the "sweet" unlocks.
This is where I'm confused, though. I did not go to the Midnight release of Gears of War 2. I do not own the Limited Edition of either game. I won a Gold Hammerburst from a competition just the other weekend, and seriously could not believe that I had been lucky enough to win not only an exclusive weapon skin for Gears of War 2, but also Gears of War 3 by legacy unlock. Now I find out it's completely worthless, as any person who plays the first week gets access to these exclusive gold weapons. What an insult. Seriously.
Any one who follows this site, or even the twitter pages, sees how much people desire the gold weapons. It's a way to present that you are a part of an elite fan base. Naturally, there are people who enjoy the Gears of War games but lack the gold skins, but this is just one extra wink at those who bought the limited edition of the game, stood in line opening night, follow the forums, or just stalk twitter. People on the site congratulate the winners, while envying their win and hoping for the chance to win next time to brandish the gold weapons, presenting loyalty to Epic and the community. But now, it's simply for putting the disc into your Xbox 360 for a few seconds during opening week.
There should be no giveaway the first week. If nothing else, the pre-order skins are the exclusives for that week. I don't understand why giving away two gold weapons, highly sought after, seems like such a great idea, as it insults your loyals, and rewards the casuals. This is becoming a defined issue this generation; it feels like loyal gamers are somehow being placed aside in hopes of capturing casuals for a grasp at money. I understand it's business, but I don't understand the point in giving away such an exclusive weapon skin to anyone with the game the first week.
I feel insulted for playing the Beta, and earning the Gold Retro. The entire point of special unlocks is to make the people you play with look at your exclusives and be jealous. That's the idea of it. "I played the beta. I bought Bulletstorm, and was able to get into the Beta and unlock this gold Retro Lancer." Fellow gamers are supposed to look at that and envy my Gold next to their standard Retro Lancer, or Crimson Omen skin, or Infected Omen. That's the idea. It tells a random gamer all about my loyalty in only a glimpse.
It's the same reason I feel sympathy towards people who were buying the Epic Edition or Console. While I truly hope they weren't putting over $100s of dollars simply for DLC skins, those Infected Omen skins were supposed to be symbolic. I could play a game of Horde, and look at a teammate and know they bought either the Epic or Console Edition. It could provoke me to ask them about it. This conversation helps reinforce the comradery the Gears Community has - the subtitled "brothers to the end."
Now, with both the Controller and Limited Edition getting the Infected Omen weapon skins, there's nothing to distinguish yourself as someone who spent more on the game. I hate posting it that way, as I wish there was another way of putting it, but from a business/consumer relationship, you know that that's the point of the Infected Omen skins. Visual representation of who spent more on the game.
I'm grateful you removed the Gold Gnasher unlock for people who played during the first week. I know it's insignificant, merely a weapon skin, but what it represents to the community is why it's so important. That's why I don't understand why Veteran Gears gets the unlock for all gold skins.
If I'm playing social Horde 2.0, which I most definitely will be playing the most, I'll know who is a Veteran Gear by their Gold Gnasher. The title will not exist, since it's social, so that's how it is reflected to the community. Giving them all gold weapons skins removes the other Gold value, though.
I beat Gears of War on Insane. I'll proudly display the Gold Sawed Off Shotgun. Even if no one else cares, I'll be glad to know that my playing through the first game is still appreciated by Epic. Again, I played in the Gears of War 3 Beta. I truly bought Bulletstorm's Epic Edition exclusively for the Beta. And, being more blunt, I didn't enjoy Bulletstorm, but I thoroughly enjoyed the Beta. It made me wish the game would have released in April so that the wait would be so much less.
I won a Gold Hammerburst, and I couldn't believe the luck of it. Almost a week later, I find out the win is meaningless, as every player will have it, at least during the first week. And I was lucky enough to unlock Veteran Gear. It makes sense to have it be a Gold Gnasher; a symbolic weapon that has been through the entire game series. But that should be the only unlock for Veteran Gear.
I know nothing will change. It's probably too late to address this so close to game release. But I am truly disappointed. The correction of the Gold Gnasher giveaway was good news, but to read that not only are first week players getting two gold weapons, but two weapons that the community has competed to earn for almost 3 years is offensive. It's a lack of respect. I can't believe I just typed that, but I mean it.
Epic has their own special weapons, that only they have access to. They have the other VIP skins. And then there is the gold weapon skins. It felt like the gold skins were a real thank you for past loyalty, and that the VIP skins were going to be a reward for challenges in the new game, for more loyal gamers. But now it's an insulting presentation. It means little. Or, really, it just represent consumerism. I'll see Gold Lancers and Hammerbursts, and feel like the others. I'm a sucker who bought it during the first week. That's all it represents. Nothing more.
