    Map - Deathmatch (PC) DM-Gardenia

    Name: DM-Gardenia
    Version: 1.0
Compatibility: UT3, made on the latest patch version. All custom content so probably compatible even if you never downloaded the new bonus content
Description: A deathmatch map set in some kind of garden / cathedral themed ruins. For 3-12 players
Comments: I think its done.. Thanks everyone so much for your bug hunting and suggestions

As a side note: I'm still not able to get the U-damage to spawn on ps3, so until someone can point me in the right direction I'm going to hold off on releasing a port of the map.

This map not only looks totally awesome, the framerate is really good too. Normally I would get problems with maps looking that good, but Gardenia runs smoothly. Gameplay is great too, definitely one of the best custom maps I've seen. Good job and thank you so much for this great map!

I didn't play it yet, only fooled around in spec mode.

FPS as greatly increase since the beta but I also notice lot's of dynamic lights are now statics, shame because it was really awesome. Keeping a few would have been nice.

Good you put all assets in your map file, this is great

Will play it asap but the least I can say is that it look awesome !

    THX for the map

uhhh.... hmmmm The dynamic lights should be the same as they were in the beta.. @__@ I just checked and they look the same.. not really sure about this framerate boost you're seeing either as I didn't do any intentional optimization lol

Ho well, forgot my last comments about the dynamic lighting, it was static in spec mode in the editor but it's fine ingame ?

FPS seem a bit higher than the beta, not by much but it's a tad better.

I really like the visuals of this map. It's one of the best looking customs maps so far If you where participating in a contest, you would be in the first places for sure for the artistic design !

But in the other hand, many small things could have been done to make it really a finished piece of art. I did mention many of them in your beta thread & it could have been done really fast without to much time. I still encounter collision issues, blocking volume are missing at some spots & so on...

Anyway, it's visually a "hit" & I like many things in it so it's a keeper

    THX for the map.

This map is really a design jewel, but a Na Pali themed version with Hourences Unreal Skybox would be definitively a true classic.

Holy f'ing hell, I hate this map. Why you ask?

    • It caused me to play UT3 so much that I started to feel nauseous.
    • It forced me to waste too much time taking screenshots.
    • It made my jaw sore from hitting the ground every time I turned a corner in the map.
    • It has caused a loss of hard drive space as it is now permanently in my UTGame folder.

In all seriousness, as others have already said: this is probably one of the best damn maps for UT3 I have ever seen or played. Absolutely every angle in this map is a work of art. And the gameplay is stunning to boot. I don't give out 5 stars very often, but this one is well deserving. Great work!

I've also added it to Mapraider's three mirrors along with a bunch of additional screenshots:

For me, this is a bitter-sweet map.

The sweet stuff: The visuals and atmosphere are really great. There is a lot of quality custom content, which makes the map feel fresh. The details are also very nicely done (light rays and dust, iirc).

The bitter stuff: To me, the map is scaled a bit too small (mainly in the horizontal axis). For a fast game like UT 3, this can cause game play problems.

I first tried it with 7 bots and at time, was way too much. With a lower number, it helps, but doesn't solve the underlying problem of scale.

There are a few minor technical issues, but nothing really big.

It's still a keeper, but having a better scaled map with make this map shine with no shadows.

Outstanding... this made my night. (I haven't played this game in a while and sought out some new maps)

The first thing that assaulted my senses was the depth of everything in this map.

    Thanks for making it!

It's impressive how smooth the framerate is for such a beautiful map...
The layout was my least favourite part: everything is too cramped IMO (and I think the large majority of UT3 custom maps are overscaled ). I think there should have been a little more variety when it comes to the scale of spaces: I had the feel that most of the places I visited were corridors or platforms all of them with a very similar (extremely narrow) width. Surprisingly though, never got stuck at any mesh and the game I played turned out to be way more entertaining than I expected... Good job!

Played this map on my break last night. Looks amazing! Very immersive. Gameplay felt a little tight for my taste but thats how some DM maps roll.

Will try to getting this up on our Multi-vote asap. BTW - what server are you playing on mruczek? Those weaps look sick! I did a scan over my list of servers and couldn't find the one your on. Any website with info about it? Thanks!

WOW! Stunning work! Reminded me much of Unreal 1 and UT99 (style and atmosphere).

I really like your foliage/plants, they look damn realistic! You surely have talent, keep up the good work!

    Cool great custom content!

Another one with great custom content including grass, falling leaves, trees, vines, flowers, ruins, light fixtures, etc. which makes for a great atmosphere with many details. I have no problem with the scale in here because every map is different and I like variety. I found a 4on4 TDM match works just fine and bots are fairly good; although, I guess they can't swim because they die shortly after hitting water.

    Cool Looks tremendous!

This is one of the finest maps ever made; sure its botanical alright and heart for the enlightenment. Good looking statues, love the daisies and roses, and other custom contents are in good optimization, especially the sky is getting a new image. I've played this map with bots using the Heaven of Relics mutator to keep the FPS on a track. This place is covered in springtime and this is the better place to fight in the DM/TDM/Duel gametype. Take a deep relaxation to bring back old memories.

I've been playing litteraly thousands of user-made maps from the "late" UT serie (not counting UT99 I hear). While I'm not posting here too often, it is in all humility that I claim to be one of the most well-informed active player on everything that was released for UT2003-2004 and UT3, at least in mapping and skinning/modeling.

I'm not sure whether the author himself would agree but, in my opinion, Gardenia is absolutely the best map ever made in nearly 10 years of yet extremely skilled mapping. All the other gorgeous, balanced and addictive ones I can think of simply cannot enter in serious competition with this jewel of a new kind.

The map requires skills, and never ceases to unveil myriads of new possibilities due to its perfect gameplay. I personnally don't see anything wrong with the scale, nor the z-axis. The weapons were put with so much attention and intelligence that they entirely justify any room, any slope, any corner.

And when it comes to the visuals, it is without exaggeration that I would deem them as clearly superior to anything that was made using the UT3 engine. Owning a rather good hardware, I cannot truly rate the overall optimization of the level, but, according to the people who posted here, it is very solid; which adds some more astounding shine to this already unbelievably clean map.

Really, thank you for releasing such a masterpiece. The Tournament has never been as great as it is now that Gardenia is out.
