Default First Try on UDK, Need your Comments

    Hi Everybody,

This is my first try to do something on UDK. I'm not a Designer or CGArtist, I'm a Engineering Student, but my bro show me this engine...and i just love it.

I want to increase my level, so please tell me everything u want for reach my target

In the same BSP, i made one scene as a game (With Custom Postproceschain), and another one trying to simulate an ArchiviZ (Corrected)(Default Postproceschain)

    Game Scene

    ArchiviZ (Corrected) Scene

    Thanks a lot!

Looks great. But what is an Archivist?

He may mean ArchVis (architectural visualization). Good work on the materials, and filling the space with detail objects. Your lighting seems really blown out, with some odd bright areas on the floor, but really soft muddy shadows...

Check the radius & brightness [LightComponent] of each light (probably need to turn the brightness down if it's above 1), also check the [Lightmass] properties for the Light Source Angle (controls the shadow edge 'hardness') as well as the Shadow Exponent.

Lighting is tricky. Work with one light at a time (there's an 'Enabled' property which you can turn off on all the other ones). Working one light at a time will allow you to really see what the Direct Light vs the Bounced Light is doing for your scene.

Hey thanks for the comments and Excuse me for " The Archivist" lol, i wrote it Archiviz but the Browser had Auto-correct enable... so i thought i was wrong... that mistake will never happen again.
BTW Joshua.fontany thanks for the Tips!, I'll check what I'd made, and your right, the "Light shafts" from the lamps are fakes, i had a lot of troubles with the lights... when i put an skylight and then a Dominant Directional Light, i lose the control over the scene, can u tell me what are the steps for lights configuration? when i wanted to add the spotlights, nothing works....
I'll start a new project and apply those tips

No need to apologize, the ones you called Archivist seemed like they had different lighting so I thought it was something I wasn't aware of. Those seem like they're missing shadows... almost looks like vertex lighting instead of lightmass.

on that scene, i delete the dominant and only put a skylight with brightness 1, above the dinning room there are 2 spotlights, but i don't know why do not look as what they are.
Then i added, before run lightmass, they appear that work but when i bake it... u can see the result, What do u think? am i missing a step?

Skylight with brightness 1 probably is the reason why they look flat. Everyone has their own way of lighting and there's no standard way of lighting thing. My lighting method seems to change every 3 months. But I would put dominant directional outside shining through the windows. I only use skylight to add ambient color when indirect lighting from lightmass is not enough. I never use it to brighten anything. Also use the material to light the scene in case of your ceiling lights.

Try building lights with those only and then slowly add point and spot lights as needed.

I've been trying to fix the lights but I've couldn't find where is the problem. I deleted the Skylight and even that way, the scene conserves lighting and i don't know why, in the finder, i was looking for everyone of them and delete it, then, i added a point light.. didn't work... so... I'll start again, trying this house... great for me

this is the pix... I'll try to make all the tips than u gave me... stay tuned lol

Protip: As of june version of UDK, Epic provides template scenes with lighting presets. Use them for starter.

UE is filled with tons of legacy lighting features and it is important to know how to use the right ones(ie. no point in using skylights with lightmass). Not an easy thing, but very important if you want to get nice effects.

    Cheers

Seriously you did that in UDK?! THATS AMAZING!!! I am absolutely blown away, and also experiencing a strange mix of inspiration and discouragement from how good that is in comparison to my own work.

    Very good job

Just wanted to say, I like your style of design. As others have mentioned, most of the great looks will come from lighting techniques, and thats all that is missing here. Looks good! Keep at it! Nice ref pics too where do these ppl live? lol. I want a house like that!

    Hi Everybody!

this is one shot from the project... there are no textures, meshes and custom lights... these are only Terrain and BSP House with textures from UDK library.

How i told you guys, this is only a Sketch of my idea based on those photos... I'll be working on the textures, meshes...etc

    What do you think?

the next time i post pics, the project will be done, if you could give me some ideas and tips from your experience...will be so nice from you.

    Thankx!

Is there anyway to use HDR images on to UDK like Vray for lighting?

UDK take the skydome info with the lightmass and convert it to lighting info in the scene, you have to make a dome with yur textures and then apply it on the static mesh. here u can find how to do it.

    thanks for watching!
    O_O Wha? Huh?
