Thread: Can't save game

  1. #1

    Default Can't save game

So last night I tried playing my new copy. After dealing with the PhysX install issues, a few reinstalls, a few restarts and some other choice problems, I finally get into the game only to find out that there's no GFWL overlay at all. Home key has no functionality (nor does the Guide button on my wired 360 controller) and when I try to enter the game, pressing SPACE to sign in just closes the prompt and returns me to the main splash screen.

So far I've reinstalled GFWL using the on disc, ran Windows Update (even getting the brand new Windows 7 Service Pack 1) and nothing's working. GFWL has worked in every other game I've tried with no issues, but this is pretty lame if I can't even start the game.

OS: Windows 7 x64 Professional (now with SP1)

I have exactly the same problem (also had the PhysX problem, which I solved using these forums).

No GFWL overlay, nothing happens when you press the Home button, and the only way to play the game is without logging in--meaning no saved games.

It would really be nice to see some support or recognition of this problem.

Now join you guys. After PhysX problem, i get the same problem with Live(not working Home key).

Yup...same exact problem as you guys. PhysX issue first makes the game unlaunchable, and then this. Hopefully someone is working on this problem...? Any sort of acknowledgment of this issue on behalf of EA or Epic would be really appreciated.

    Hey guys!
Joined the forum just to say I'm having the GFWL problem as well. If enough people post here, maybe it will get fixed faster.

Add me to this list. Please fix this!

I also had the PhysX issue, and once that was corrected I still cannot Save. GFWL overlay does not appear when game is running and the prompt to sign in does not work.

I have gone through the same things. I was really excited about this game, but all the glitches with PhysX and now being unable to save my game because of the GFWL issue I am beginning to think I should have saved my money for Homefront. At least give us some kind of response so we know you acknowledge our issue exists. So far it's just been a big waste of time and money with nothing to show for it. Throw us a bone, Epic!

GFWL support is apparently able to offer solutions for the ZDP not connecting so they might be able to fix this, but being that I'm at work away from my home machine I can't really test this.

ZeroThePenguin, I'm not sure our problem is related to the huge pain that is the ZDP. I for one can't access GFWL through Bulletstorm by any means, the button to sign in literally does nothing. I personally think if it was Zero Day Piracy related it would at least give me a chance to sign into GFWL, and then tell me something was wrong with my connection or verification code. I could be wrong, i'm taking a shot in the dark. Anyways I'll still try and get a hold of someone at GFWL. Also I got this game off of steam, I'm curious to know how many other people with this same problem got it through steam.

Mine's a retail disc copy. Reason I mentioned the ZDP is because that's part of the GFWL integration and if they can offer support with that maybe they can offer support with getting the overlay/logging in.

GameFiend I'm in the exact same situation.

I found a solution for my case at least. Instead of modifying the PhysX files as others have done, I removed all of PhysX and did a clean install, then had steam verify integrity of game cache for Bullet Storm, this prompted steam to download a fix for a apparently missing file, and it fixed the game, now the GFWL overlay appears and the game saves properly. Hope this helps

I've got a steam copy, and I'm having the same issue as everyone else. This blows.

Wonder if there's a way to get this to work on the retail copy. When you say you did a clean install, are you talking about PhysX or Bulletstorm?

I tried AC604's technique, and just about every variation of it, with no luck. Still the same problem. It also might interest some of you to know I got a hold of a GFWL tech support guy and he talked me through a bunch of stuff to try and get the game to work for about 2 hours, no joke. None of it worked, and i was given an appointment to be called back tomorrow by their staff, sometime between 1 and 3. Pretty disheartening, I know... I'm going to keep messing around with this stuff all night i guess.

Spoke with GFWL tech support. He told me that there had been a problem with the download, and was confident that it had been fixed on the retailer's side, and that if I re-downloaded it would work.

(I downloaded from Direct2Drive, and am re-downloading now... will let you know if it works!)

To clarify, i removed PhysX completely and downloaded a fresh version (before trying this, my PhysX was a newer release then Bullet Storm would recognize) I never uninstalled the game, although steam did repair the game install when I ran the check on game cache.

Nope, mine is retail, doesn't make a difference.

Ditto. Just uninstalled the game, PhysX, and GFWL, then reinstalled the game (letting it install its own versions). Uninstalled that PhysX since it doesn't work and installed the new one it requests and ran Windows Update to get GFWL updated. Started the game up, still no access to GFWL overlay and thus no saving. This is approaching New Vegas levels of buggy lameness.

  21. #21

Yeah, as predicted, the total re-download was not a success. Same exact problems.

I'm starting to think there is nothing to be done on the user side. Which really sucks. I haven't had this buggy an experience with a game since DOS!

From the little bit I've played, though, it looks really good. A real shame! They better fix this soon.

How about it, Epic? You have my money, so could you at least let us know that you are working on it? I feel like I threw good money away with this overwhelming lack of response. Could someone please say something?!

Just tried throwing the game on my laptop (running a 9800M GS) and it won't even get past the PhysX issue. So glad I pre-ordered and picked up day of release so I could get some good gaming in.

    Hi all.

My problem with this is fixed. I did many things and I will outline them here.

    Uninstalled Physx engine

Uninstalled Games for windows live (both instances in uninstall)

I uninstalled Bulletstorm. (I purchased mine from steam so I had to re download it. Truly I think this is what fixed it. I think steam updated the download)

    Downloaded and reinstalled Bulletstorm.

When the game started the Games for Windows Live came up and asked for my serial number (Remember to write this down)

Notes: My mouse does not work when typing in the serial for Games for Windows Live. Also you can't hit Ctrl + TAB to get rid of the steam overlay. That takes you to the desktop and you can't get back into the game. You have to kill the process and start over.

    Hope this helps.

If what you say is true,
then people with retail disks, like me, have nothing do to?
Am I supposed to wait for Epic to release a patch?

They accused we PC gamers of being pirates, but it looks to me like Epic is the one with our $60 and we are the ones with nothing to show for it. Who's the pirate now, Epic? If I have to spend hours trying everything under the sun just to get my game working properly after paying full price they had better put me on the payroll. If I don't get some kind of satisfaction soon, I will definately be warning people to stay away from this useless bugfest. It's not piracy that's costing them money, it's their own incompetence in testing their games before they sell them. Sorry for the rant, folks. After waiting in line for the midnight launch and still not having a working game I am getting pretty frustrated.

according to what i've been able to gather from here http://www.bulletstormforum.com/bull...etstorm-7.html
    [i'm soltair on that forum]
it seems that the GFWL overlay doesn't work w/ 64 bit machines,
i don't know who dropped the ball here, but it seems to be Epic, since it works perfectly with almost every other game...

Also got this problem, with a retail version of the game. I never had any issues with gfwl. This is the first time.

Als got a very useful warning in the event viewer:

I managed to get it working.

    1) Uninstall Games for Windows live and the redistributable.
Also uninstall Windows Live ID (if it's there)

    2) reboot

    3) install Games from Windows live from the DVD: X:\Live\gfwlivesetup.exe
and complete the setup, at the end, make sure you have the option checked to start gfwl.

    4) gfwl window should open and it will check for an update. Install the update.

    5) after updating gfwl, and the gfwl marketplace thingy is shown, close it... and start bulletstorm

I have a slightly different problem: in the latest update, Windows Live was given a dependency on the ID Sign-in assistant service. The only problem is that the installer appears to be broken, and the "windows update" website (usable only in IE) is throwing a 403 every time I try to use it. This dependency means that I cant start GFWL, meaning I can't progress past Bulletstorm's title screen. GFWL has crippled yet another game for me.

The differences in file versions are because I manually installed the title update for Bulletstorm (v1.0.7094 to v1.0.7111), not that it did any good, and I have Windows Live Essentials 2011 installed (the msidcrl40.dll belongs to the Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant I believe).

I've got the retail copy of this game yesterday from ShopTo.net (I live in the UK) and I cannot believe the hassle I've had trying to play it; shocking for a Games for Windows LIVE (GfWL) title. I have literally spent over a day trying to get it to work. I've reinstalled it four times, done a repair install twice, I've tried uninstalling both the disc and later download versions of PhysX and GfWL. Nothing works. I have many other GfWL titles and they all work fine on my system, which is an Intel Core i7-920 with 6 GB DDR3 memory and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 graphics running Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit). I'm using the latest v266.77 WHQL graphics drivers and Service Pack 1 is installed.

Here are the two issues I've encountered:

    1. Post-install the game asked for the serial key which I entered but after ZDP had ran and decrypted the game, when Bulletstorm launched it complained about PhysX being out of date and I had no choice but to abort to the desktop. I had the latest 9.10.0514 version installed by the way. Turned out that the game seems to install outdated files in the game's Win32\PhysXLocal folder and the fix is to copy the files from Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\PhysX\Common folder into the Bulletstorm's folder. This at least allows the game to load! Ho-hum, not a great start.

    2. Once the game has loaded I'm prompted to sign in to LIVE, only I can't because Games for Windows LIVE isn't active inside the game. Yet other GfWL titles are working fine on my system as I checked them all. I have the latest version 3.4 installed as far as I know. So I can only play the game offline and without saving which means effectively it is pointless playing it, period.

As I said I loaded my other GfWL games such as Dead Rising 2, Lost Planet 2, Gears of War, etc., and they all work fine and sign into LIVE when they load. For some reason Bulletstorm won't. Why?

The ultimate irony is that Bulletstorm itself runs perfectly with a silky-smooth framerate and great visuals but without the option to save there's no point in even getting into the campaign. And, of course, I can't even go online. Hell, I can't even save my graphics settings because of the inability to save a profile! It's things like that which incite hatred for GfWL. I mean what other non-GfWL doesn't let you save?!?

To say I'm unhappy is putting it mildly! I want to play the damn game, thank you. Please don't tell me this is yet another PC game I have to wait weeks to play which the developers patch it (F1 2010, Test Drive Unlimited and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit being other recent examples).

gfwl is very anal about the files. If they are not perfectly right, then gfwl won't work. So make sure you properly clean gfwl from your system before you install gfwl as it was included on the DVD.
Also, don't install gfwl manually or via windows update. That will just piss off the Microsoft DRM deities.

If gfwl doesn't work in the game. Check the event log of Windows for which files might cause a problem.
