What was the exact way to find the tags?

I've only been on the forums for a few months, mostly on the GOW2 and 3 side, but have been perusing the Last Day posts in the last few weeks. This seems like a real fun concept and wished I knew about it 2 years ago. However, I'm still not 100% sure how people found the tags. I've done some research, and thinnk I know, but was wondering if someone could confirm or tell me how.

So, from what I understand, the GOW2 Last Day website and cryptic tweets from SixOkay gave you coordinates to go geocaching. Is this the basics? If not, can someone let me know? I also read that there were videos with clues. Any truth with that?

EPIC released coordinates, and other hints. If you worked with EPIC or Microsoft you got one, and some were given away at contests, release parties too.

I wonder if anyone just got plain lucky and stumbled across one? Likewise a passer by who knew nothing or had no interest in the game might have found one in such a fashion and thrown it in the trash?? :O
