    Default UT3 Editor vs UDK.

    Whats the difference?

    Hi...

    First UT3 and UDK are the same in severals aspects like Unreal Script and Tools.
    UT3 and UDK both are Unreal Engine 3 and both Allow you to create Mods using the editor.

    UDK have much much much improvements since the UT3 release.
    UDK let you to create Mods for commercil purposes while UT3 just for non-commercial. Btw try to see the licensing page to know the way.

    Severals tools in UT3 are outdated and using the last update you cannot get what is already put in UDK.

    Also UDK have a nice tool Unreal FrontEnd that you wont find in UT3. This app allow you to compile and create a installer for your mod.

    Have a bunch of things more but I believe this can help you in decide where to start.

    and the entire UI are being changed to use GFx Scaleform (a tool that can let you construc the UI in flash) and create 3D effects from your 2D assets and much more.

    Lightmass is probably the largest difference between the two. Along with that are more tools that were already mentioned: Scaleform, SpeedTree, Bink Video, FaceFX, etc.

    The editor UI has been given a pretty massive overhaul in almost every way from easier navigation in viewports to making it easier to find and use the different tools.

    And, of course, being able to use the UDK to create entirely new games from scratch instead of being forced to build stuff on top of UT3.

    The Features page does a pretty decent job at showing the differences.

    Is the UT3 editor discontinued?

    Did the UDK evolve from the UT3 editor into a standalone?

    Comparing the UI's alone, UT3 Editor seemed lacking.

    UDK is an instance of the Unreal Engine 3 used to create games such as Mass Effect, Singularity, Batman Arkhum Asylum etc. UT3 is a game and the editor that comes with UT3 is only for modding the game UT3 (Unreal Tournament 3) or making maps for it. UDK is a tool to make your own games that you can sell.

    UDK Evolved from The Unreal Engine 1 - 2 then 3

    UT3 editor comes with the game.... UT3 so its not discontinued, you just have to buy the game.

    And yes the UT3 Editor is outdated since Unreal Tournament 3 uses an older version of the Unreal Engine 3

    The UT3 editor is not discontinued. It's still there and support can be found almost anywhere for it. Official support was ended some time ago, but there's still a lot of resources out there for it and the UT3 forums can answer practically any question you will ever have on it by now.

    UT3 was created with Unreal Engine 3 just like the Gears of War series, Batman: Arkhum Asylum, Mass Effect series, Borderlands, and dozens of other games. The UDK is not associated with UT3 at all other than the fact it too is powered by Unreal Engine 3 technology, it is Unreal Engine 3 really. It does come with some UT3 models, maps, materials, etc but those are meant as an example display of what the UDK can do, nothing more and nothing less.

    Comparing the UI's alone, UT3 Editor seemed lacking.
    The UI of the UT3 editor, capabilities of it, and lack of other tools is because UT3 was created using a build of Unreal Engine 3 from 2007. They have not updated it in a couple years because giving massive engine upgrades to a game is very risky when the goal is to fix things, not break everything.

    Epic never stops updating their game engine so the UDK was first released with a build that was two years newer and was capable of much more from the beginning. They've updated it every month since November of last year so it has come a very long way as a product itself.

    I think it deserves to be said again that you can only create mods with the editor provided with Unreal Tournament 3. With the tools that come with the UDK you can create entirely new games from scratch with next to nothing referencing the UT3 example that's included with the UDK package.

    Great answers for a new guy. Thank you all very much.

    As I have written in another post, I'm studying Game Design, and one of the courses this semester is level design. Before the semester is over, we will have delivered 3 different maps, where the first one is due in 3 weeks.

    I was hoping to use UDK to make these levels, as I am under the impression that anything Unreal Editor can do, the UDK can do better. However, our teacher has said we must use the Unreal Editor for our assigments and labwork.

    Playing around with the Unreal Editor I have come to miss the WASD navigation and the drag and drop features of the resourse-manager-thing.

    I dont know, it just feels somewhat counter-intuitive learning starting with the old, when you could use the new.

    Can you make levels of UT3 with the UDK?

    It's not entirely impossible, but it's so much of a pain to do with workarounds that it's not really worth the time, effort and frustrations. It's best just to create the level with the product you intend to use it with.

    It's really surprising your course requires the UT3 editor when the UDK is completely free and was released with student courses, hobbyists, and indie devs in mind.

    Then I will definitely stick to Unreal Editor for this first course.

    I had no idea level design was this fun though, so the UDK wont see much dust either.

    Anyone know if it is possible to get the WASD navigation in Unreal Editor? I looked for a remap I did not find one.

    Hi again...

    I personally have the UT3 and UDK installed in my machine ..
    Most you will learn in UT3 can be made equal in UDK. Both are UE3.

    For starters using the Terrain, or placing the actor on the screen, and creating some interaction by kismet or animating using matinee, all have he same concept.

    A genius on the tool is not made just knowing what the new has . But understanding how was the way before the new software.

    A bunch of things don't have changed from UT3 to UDK, just improved. Dont make difference you start from one or another. Just do the job and jump to the new and show your teacher about the improvements.

    Ask your teacher if you can carry your UDK Folders in some Notebook or FlashDrive and work on it(I prefer to work in my notebook on the school). Any thing your teacher can make or let you do in UT3 will be the same or better in UDK.

    Just ask him, and enjoy it.

    WASD Movement is simple, you just need to hold down the Right Mouse Button, and navigate with WASD.
