NEWS: SOME NEW DEVELOPMENTS!

1.] Sundance and Killa KC discuss GoW on the MLG Raleigh live stream during a Q&A. They say that the biggest reason GoW2 was dropped was due to the LAN/Online inconsistencies, as well as no increasing support from Epic (at the time). They then say that they will definitely be looking into GoW3, and that as long as there are no major problems, it will definitely be considered.

Also, please read the whole thread before turning this down, and keep in mind just because you wouldn't play it, doesn't mean others wouldn't. We need all the support on this we can get, so please don’t just say no just because you wouldn’t play it. You are just minimizing the chance for a playlist many would like to see added to be added. After all, it isn't like you have to play it.

And, if you support this thread, PLEASE POST. WE NEED ALL THE SUPPORT WE CAN GET, AND YOUR POST DOES MATTER! Views don't help, so please express your support and keep this thread bumped.

What is MLG?

MLG, short for Major League Gaming, is a competitive gaming league where players compete for money. There are multiple LAN tournaments held through out the year where pros, semi-pros, and amateurs alike compete for the top spot and cash. In between events, players often practice in private matches called, "scrims", private matches with MLG settings enabled.

MLG and Gears of War 2

As many of you know, Gears of War 2 used to be on what is called the "Pro Circuit", officially being taken off after MLG Orlando:

The following quote was sent to all pro players shortly after MLG Orlando (2009):

"First, I would like to thank all of you for being patient as we went through out 2010 season planning. As for the news you’ve all been waiting for, I am very disappointed to say that Gears of War 2 will not return on the MLG Pro Circuit for another season. This was a very difficult decision to make for the league since the Gears franchise has been with the MLG for so long. There has been a constant state of discussion within the company over the past few months on this topic. Gears of War had many high points in its tenure with the league, however we faced obstacles that we ultimately were not able to overcome. A number of factors played into this decision including audience numbers, the gameplay itself, and our developer relationship with Epic. I know that many of you are disappointed to hear this but I hope you understand the reasoning. The decision took a long time because it was indeed difficult and was made and finalized just yesterday.

I think it was really awesome how the community and certain pros rallied around the game. You guys are all great competitors and great partners to have. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with each of you over the past year(s). I would like to thank all of you for competing with MLG and hope that you can continue competing with us in some other way. I’ve developed good relationships with many of you guys and know how much you guys care about competitive gaming.

MLG is growing and spreading the focus around to other genres, but at the same time getting more efficient within each genre. Stay tuned for additional league announcements pertaining to this season set to be announced today. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about any of this. This was an announcement that saddened many, including myself. And it is something that can hopefully be avoided with GoW3.

Debunking Myths

1. MLG Players are just a bunch of little annoying kids who talk trash.

This couldn't be further from the truth. This is the biggest misconception about MLG, and why it gets such a bad rep. The wanna-be's and posers who say they're MLG, when in actuality they have probably never even been to a LAN event.

During the first season of GCON's highly acclaimed first season, they ran an MLG Invitational for the first event. The following quote is taken from the thread just linked:

Thank you all SO much! Thanks to your awesome attendance, as you can see above, we smashed our previous record and achieved just over 300 confirmed attendees! That's incredible, we're so happy so many of you got to enjoy GCON and have a great time on MLG settings - it's nice to see so many people change their opinion of the MLG community and the rulesets they use.

We also have to thank the MLG guys who came and participated from across their community, a big thanks to Get Bronco for playing against our nominated Community All Stars and Falloutt for helping organise, promote and assist in the building of our biggest event yet. We look forward to more partnered events in the future.

The MLG Invitational, as you can see, was a HUGE success. Many people had the chance to play some relaxing private matches under MLG settings with MLG Pros themselves. Any of the 300+ people who attended will tell you the guest(s) that they played with were very nice, and in general this forum's perception of MLG improved at the time of the event. After having a chance to play under the settings and play with some professionals, they were glad they gave it a chance.

2.It would take away from the production time of the game.

Also far from the truth. The only thing EPIC would really need to do is make sure they can change weapon swaps and match settings with out a Title Update.

This is because the actual MLG settings won't be unveiled until AFTER the game is out, thus meaning a playlist isn't possible until the game is out.


3. It isn't necessary.

Ok, not a myth, just an opinion. But think about it. Was anything added for Gears of War 2 necessary, such as Horde? Is having a Gears of War 3 necessary? No, of course not, but they all appeal to different people, no different than what this playlist would do.

4. EPIC would be appealing to too small a crowd.

Even if it was true that the players who enjoy playing Gears on a competitive level was too small of a percentage of the total population, this still wouldn't be a valid argument. Why? Because you don't have to be an MLG player to play it, of course.

Look at Halo 3's MLG Playlist. Without comparing games, this playlist is one of the game's more popular, and appeals to more than just the MLG community. It is a chance for variety and different settings, while playing a less serious version of actual scrims or lan events. My sister enjoys this playlist, and probably couldn't even tell you what MLG stands for. Red Faction Guerrilla had an MLG playlist as well.

This playlist appeals to many players, and I'm sure would be enjoyed by many who try it. It is a chance for variety, a chance many players would appreciate.

5.Just go play private matches!

OK, not even a myth, but still something that can be put down.

It isn't always the easiest thing to get your team on, never find another team to practice against. This would be a quick and simple way of toning up skill (player or team) that would be of great convenience for MANY people.

Saying this would also ignore what was said earlier, that players of all kinds would enjoy this playlist. Not to mention not everyone even has a team to begin with.

6. Friendly Fire would ruin it.

The only con I can think of. Easily avoided though. EPIC could always add in something similar to Halo (again, trying to avoid comparison) that gives you the ability to kick some one from the game who team kills you. Maybe EPIC could make it so 2 team kills, and the player has the ability to boot? If the player is generally being a douche, then no harm done in kicking him. If it was a genuine mistake, then the player will probably choose not to kick him or her to begin with.

What would this playlist include?

Simply put, it would just be Gears of War 3 played under MLG settings. This LIKELY includes:

Execution
Four vs Four
Friendly Fire
Various weapon swaps
First to win four rounds
Symmetrical maps

Bonus features would be up to EPIC.

In conclusion

Please keep in mind, EPIC wants Gears to be tactical. I have never played this game more "tactically" than when under playing MLG settings. The communication required to win is insane, and when it comes to competitive play, it is all about the team. No one is worried about kill stealing or anything like that.

Please note that MLG putting Gears on the circuit is not a given. It is very, very likely though.

i have never played mlg (expect halo mlg playlist...), but i would like to play some gow matches with mlg setting. Those seems to be interesting.

i really support this/ mlg is a way 4 ppl to experience the game a whole other way i have never played public seriously and its no fun but mlg is team based game really tactical nobody cares about kill stealing the objective is to win the game not by who has the most kills

i would love to see a mlg playlist in gow3 because it could lead to a relationship between epic and mlg similar to bungie's. I personally think a mlg playlist for gow3 would be very popular because they usually have the best settings for games.

as said before, this is not something everyone has to play. You will always have the hardcore players in each playlist, the occasional players, the "i'll try it," and the "as long as it does not interfere with my playlist."

Basically, what i'm trying to say, is that an mlg playlist would not hurt anyone in any way, but simply provide more options for the consumer and appeal to a wider variety of people, which is a good thing for everyone. Like i said, it's great to see everyone being open minded and supportive of this seeing as this would do tremendous things for not only the competitive community (ensuring mlg picks up gow3), but for the entire gow community in general seeing as it provides for more options and different ways to play the game.

I would like to see and play a MLG Playlist in Gears 3.. who knows if Epic support MLG maybe Gears would become a whole new level and experience, and with Halo games coming to an end after Reach is released im sure Gears could fill a spot on the circuit now Gears 2 is no longer there either.

An MLG playlist would keep me playing GoW3 public games longer than any other playlist possibly could.

I have 18 and a half days played on GoW2 public. I wouldn't be surprised if my private match stats were just as high, almost entirely from scrimming. Not to mention, scrims could be pretty difficult to get at times. If I could hop into a playlist on GoW2 for MLG settings, my public time spent would probably be close to 50 days, just off of attempting to sharpen my skills and having something to do that keeps a focus on balance and competitive play.

I have known about MLG and what it is for a while but never paid any attention to it, so I suppose I would be considered a casual gamer, but I think if Gears had an MLG playlist, I would be all over it. I watched the video posted earlier and I really like the weapon swaps and different settings. So just being able to have weapon swaps in private matches wouldn't help someone like me who plays the game in a competitive nature, but doesn't have a team or people to play with and doesn't go to competitive events. A public playlist would be awesome.

The addition of an MLG playlist would be very appreciated by both competitive gamers and, if they give it a shot, a lot of casual gamers as well. It offers diversity in the game itself, as well as an incredibly tactical and exciting way to play.

There is a huge misconception about how MLG Gears is played. People who don't know much about it seem to consider it to be a dumbed down, run n' gun way to play the game, but it is quite the opposite. MLG Gears takes incredible teamfire with lancers and pistols, intense amounts of communication, all mixed in with high levels of individual skill and intelligence. Anybody looking to take the game past casual gameplay or looking for diversity in gametypes would really appreciate the addition of an MLG playlist.

Please EPIC, words cannot describe how much it would mean to a lot of people. After all, considering nobody would be forced to play it, there would be no downside to having this playlist, but the support you would receive would be enormous.

A MLG playlist would make so much money for epic it will bring people who like to compete together it will bring togethers gamers everywhere to be the best in this final game it will give competitive gamers a great experience and even casual gamers who want to try something new and brand new prespective of gears of war (if they WANT to of course) it will be benefical to EVERYONE

It gives a lot of competitive gamers something to do when their teams or friends are not online.

It also allows some casual gamers who are interested to try it out and maybe get into competitive gaming. I've been playing the gears of war series ever since it was released and absolutly love the game. If Epic would just consider promoting their harcdcore/competitive fans a little bit with no hinderance to the casual gamers, Gears 3 would gain a lot of popularity.

Being a game on the MLG circuit comes with certain perks. Thousands of people will tune in to watch the live stream and other spectators at the events will be watching and cheering on. Being at an actual event is one of the greatest experiences I have had in my lifetime and I hope that Epic will take a look at this thread and take into account all of the testimony and the communities opinion.

Support 100%. I personally play Gears for the campaign, because I'm completely terrible at most third person multiplayer shooters, but I've followed MLG since 2006. And I was dissapointed Gears 2 was not on the Circut for 2010, because I enjoyed watching the matches. Hopefully Epic will put in the necessary tools to make this playlist a reality.

EPIC was pushing for a more tactical team shooter play style in Gears 2.

In order to be a good team on the MLG pro circuit, teams require massive amounts of teamwork. It would only make sense to include an MLG play list. EPIC should recognize that embracing a partnership from MLG would only make their game better. It would require teammates to play the game tactically, the way EPIC wants the game to be played.

i support this thread 100%. i only play gears for the competition and if it were not for mlg i probably wouldn't have played for nearly as long as i did.

i really want Gears 3 to be the Halo killer. It could be, if there was just a little cooperation with Epic and Mlg.

I would love to see an MLG playlist. This game has come so far and has brought together so many people, the people that I play with have become such a part of my life, and no this is not pathetic as some of you people might think and yes I do have a life with friends in the real world but online I can truly be myself and say the things that come to my mind and those friends are still around. Its great to play competitive matches with MLG playlist because its not all about winning its about coming together as I have with my team and the comradeship we have achieved through our ups and downs. I think an MLG playlist could very well strengthen the Gears community as a whole an make us the force to be reckoned with that we should be.

Honestly here is my standpoint.

I have always been a fan of MLG and the competitive face of gaming, but when I found out about MLG and LAN events, I was super excited.. I was even more excited to play the new game that everyone was talking about.. Gears of War (1) I did attend alot of events for that and to be honest, the only reason I stuck with this game for all these years is because of the competitiveness, to be honest, I haven't touched the game since MLG dropped it from the circuit, and I probably never will if they don't decide to work with MLG,

Is it just me or does it seem like Epic doesn't realize that they have lost tons of money by not cooperating with MLG.. If Epic decides to change the competitive face of the game I believe this game can grow larger than the Halo series.. You guys have lost A LOT of gamers due to you focusing on more of the "Public & Campaign Gameplay" Although I support that opposition 100% you must also focus on the competitive side as well, Look how big Bungie did it with Halo, they cooperated with MLG to make a PLAYLIST for matchmaking, they cooperated for almost everything, IMO Gears is such a better game than Halo but it is almost always overlooked because of the lack of effort that Epic has put into the competitive side of this game,

Also, I second the first myth wholeheartedly. Most of the MLG and even GB guys I've known and played with are pretty cool. Most kids online who claim to be affiliated with MLG are just trying to look cool or get into clans. There are some though, who aren't "pro" or "semi-pro" that enjoy and love the competition hanging around too, and most of them are pretty cool.

Those actually seemed interesting. Replacing mulchers and mortars ect. to something worth fighting for. And no frags is always good thing. I just didn't get why boltok and gorgon must be replaced with snub.

When you active the Boltok it becomes its own little power weapon, so to keep the pace and Team shotting up they switched it out. Same with Gorgon, just not nearly as bad. Besides, I run out of snub ammo a lot

Well that makes sense. Still boltok is very hard to use correctly, but as you said active reload can turn into power weapon especially in hands of skilled pistolero.

Yah, Boltok + Active reload completely destroys a lot of situations. MLG-rules fire more on Lancer/Snub team-fire in order to pin teams down or win a power weapon.

And kudos to this thread, hopefully it doesn't get shut-down like the other MLG threads. Very well organized, and presented in an appealing way. Good job TC.

The boltok was used at the first MLG event of GoW2 in 2009, Meadowlands. MLG realised it was very powerful, so they took that out along with the hammerburst.

On topic: I support this 100%! I am happy seeing people at least willing to try it. All the said points from the OP are true. All that would be needed is a patch to move and replace weapons.

That is not what I meant. Since Gears 3 is a new game it is likely to introduce new features along with possible new weapons. How will Epic know to swap out certain weapons because the MLG testers haven't even gotten to use them yet? They may work well with MLG settings and they may not. I just don't think an MLG playlist would work right from launch but I still support it.

Definitely. I looked into Shadowrun (and have now owned it for over a year) when I learned it used to be on the circuit.

As I said, I'm aware that it wouldn't be possible until after launch, which is why I said "he only thing epic would really need to do is make sure they can change weapon swaps and match settings with out a title update", and mentioned that they (the settings) don't come out until after the game is out. I made it a little more clear to avoid future confusion though.

I do think they need to make their overall server side updates more detailed so that they can change almost anything with out a title update. It would make more holiday events more interesting and like you said, able to change MLG weapon swaps.

Watch how much they use lancer/snub over shotty, and the snipers going for body shots to down and hurt people. It's a team game, not bouncing shotty battles and headshots for montages(not that that doesn't happen )

Exactly. All Epic would need to do before the game is launched is include the ability for them to create playlists with custom weapons/specific maps.

Not only would this allow them to put in a MLG playlist later, it would let them to add more interesting/crazy playlists at later times.

Epic really got to sort them selves out for the majority of the community before we can worry about something like this. (tu is fine i have no problems ofcourse)

Epic took away our ability in gow 1 to setup how we the community would like to play, its a known fact more people played matchmaking than play ranked, because alot of people dont give a dam about im lvl 50-100 etc we jsut do not have the time work, life etc so we want to game to enjoy.

Then comes along gow 2, epic went hey bright idea lets force people to have to select between 2 maps, forced to play competitive and face people who will rage quit.

In short aslong as epic supports the wider community aka open public matches for gow 1, then i have no problems for a mlg playlist to be added in a TU (it will help keep gow 3 fresh) But and a BIG BUT if Epic dont support the majority of the community who wanted this feature back then why should the minority get theres? It would be a insult if epic added mlg and ignored the cries of everybody else.

Believe me, I was disappointed when I saw that EPIC got rid of the lobby system in Gears 1, and would love to see it back. But, as you said, hopefully we can get both.
