I made this exact mistake when I was sending FRs to the other Gearsbook players. I had just assumed they knew me, but almost all of them asked me who I was. A warning for future Gearsbook players, be sure to say Gearsbook in your message.

At the very top of the OP it asks people to send a note with any friend requests stating that they're from Gearsbook. I've changed the colour so it's more noticable.
