Seeing how we still have several months until Gears 3 is released, I will use this thread to post Gears 3 wallpapers. Being one to share, I invite others to use this as well, but there is no obligation to do so.

26 Jun 2011: My thought here is that everyone has to die someday, and what better fitting way for a soldier to die than on the battlefield. I had envisioned the concept would be controversial, with people asking if I had inside information (of which I certainly do not). I suppose for some, it is the implied death of Marcus, Dom, Baird or Cole. For others, the implication of the crosses is far more controversial than the possible death of their beloved heroes.

This is the big one, the one we've all been waiting for. Yes, that would be the Epic Games Gears of War 3 cover art. Is this stuff gorgeous, or what?

I have also rescaled a huge image of the complete artwork to 2560x1440 and 1920x1080 widescreen wallpapers.

I zoomed in on Marcus, changed some lighting and focal points, made a few slight alterations to the colors, gave the overall piece a faux-HDR treatment and added back in some film grain (I lost some of the original grain due to the scaling and cleaning process). I know, I know, I retouch pictures waaaaaaaaaay too much. It's a sickness and I am dealing with it, but I cannot seem to find any retouching therapists. Erm, somehow, that sounded wrong.

UPDATE: 23 July 2010 - I have not had too much graphics mojo worked up lately, so I made a few modifications to focal points, color and lighting in this "Epic" picture of Clay versus an ugly Locust critter. This is a request made by one of our forum members.

I left the larger version in its native resolution of 2560x1440. I also added in a 1920x1080 version for those of us who are hugescreen challenged.

UPDATE: 25 Jun 2010 - Fenix Defined is my latest composition. I extended out Marcus' arms a bit and refaded back in to eliminate that "cutoff" look. I then modified color hues, saturation and lumination levels. After all that, I overlaid the merged layers onto the same texture I used for the FSCB wallpaper. Enjoy!

UPDATE: 20 Jun 2010 - After seeing various wallpapers made using those awesome character portraits of Dom, Marcus and Anya, I decided to make my own, but with a real twist so that it has a chance stand out amongst the crowd.

I also put together some banners for use on fansites. The colors have been tweaked a bit to give the portraits a bit of punch so that the Crimson Omen doesn't wash them leave them washed out looking. I have provided these banners at full resolution (W1200 x H2400 x 240dpi) so you can resize them to the scale you need without losing resolution.

UPDATE: 6 Jun 2010 - I found moderately sized versions of these images on GI, but they failed at being wallpaper scaled, so I did them up for proper resolution. Not wanting to ruin the original artwork, because it is awesome, I worked to upscale each image and clean up any noise and artifacts without changing the overall imagery. Okay, I lied. I did sorta change the imagery, but only to add a few of my own personal touches because I cannot seem to help myself.

Anyways, these three wallpapers come in widescreen HD 1920x1080 resolution only.

UPDATE: 29 May 2010 - Here is my latest matte in the form of a widescreen HD wallpaper, called "Brothers to the End". This started life as a screenshot from the Ashes to Ashes trailer. I used some filtering and tablet work to clean up the noise, and then painted in my own subdued elements for an emotional piece.

UPDATE: 15 May 2010 - I took the liberty of making a B&W version of the image Rogue1 used for his wallpaper submission. I had to fill in some areas, as the source imagery I found had some obnoxious overlays in the way. I hope you all like it. This wallpaper comes in 1920x1080 widescreen.

UPDATE: 10 May 2010 - Okay, here is the Coup de grâce via Epic Games and GI Magazine. I removed all the overlays from the image, then proceeded to enlarge and clean up the image, trying to keep the original colors, textures and lighting intact. The result is a 1920x1080 HD widescreen image for your desktop. Enjoy!

UPDATE: 9 May 2010 - Brand-spanking new wallpaper here. Just another slightly offbeat version of the Gears 3 logo. In keeping with Epic's own concept, I textured and beveled the text for greater effect. I also played around with the infected Omen to get a unique look to the overall piece.

Tools used were Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.

This wallpaper comes in HD 1920x1080 for the latest desktops.

This is custom made by me, except for the Crimson Omen, which I rescaled and modified to fit. It isn't exact, but I think it's fairly close.

What this means is that my drawing skills are seriously lacking in quality. Therefore, I will composite together various elements of screenshots and then use these elements to create lineart. I will then paint in the coloring and texturing using some of the original imagery to keep things in line with Epic's own work. I will then paint in any additional elements to fill in the imagery to make it a completely new work.

The basic process is called matte painting, which normally involves use of live action shots in conjunction with painted in elements to complete a scene. Wow... sounds like a heck of a lot of work.

Even using automatic vectoring. That's if you're thinking of using auto vectoring that is.

In my experience digital painting is hugely time consuming, but that's probably because I used to work on pixel art, where every pixel was important in it's own right. It's kind of a bad habit where you obsess over every pixel.

Know what you mean about WIP's, they can sometimes give a bad impression, or even lessen the impact of the finished piece. You just have to use your own best judgment to decide whether it's a good, or bad idea to share them.

Sounds awesome anyways, no doubt they'll be on a lot of desktops soon.

I have added four new wallpapers to my original post. I extracted the images from the Ashes to Ashes trailer, then gave them each a Photoshop and Lightroom treatment to bring out the action.

The screencaps were not exactly great looking at full size, considering the compression ratio of the clip I downloaded. Needless to say, I cleaned them up the best I could without major reconstruction.

Awesome work dude! I personally, like this one better then the original. As this seems more 'fleshed out' and the eyes are attracted to the Omen rather the whole shot.

PS: I find the Gears three layout unpleasant yet pleasant at the same time. As this brown background and dark layout has been the main one for years. Aside from that, the banner is nice, just need to get used to the new one.
