Default Name contains an invalid character : []

    Hi all!

I've had UDK for a few weeks now, and it hasn't failed me ever. My knowledge of the UDK is growing rapidly (thanks to your tutorials and Raven's vids on Youtube Honestly, I love it!

But today I was fooling around on it and I wanted to make a waterfall map. I went to add a terrain layer and when I typed in 'Grass', it said "Name contains an invalid character : []"

I had no space after/before it either. I tried everything I could think of. I restarted UDK, restarted my computer, etc. No luck. It's just not my weekend, either. My Xbox 360 is in Texas right now due to the RROD

Anyways, what is going on? I'm probably doing something really dumb because of my n00bness.

    Thanks,
    Chris

I have a similar issue - I was trying to export a mesh from blender as an .ase file and every time I click import and then OK I get the same error "Import failed for MyPackage.Test Object: Name contains an invalid character : []"

    some help would be appreciated!

I have found the answer! - in my case at least, the file that I was trying to import cannot have spaces! Maybe you've coincidently added space after or before the word grass?

    I'm afraid I didn't have a space there.

I have found the answer to my own problem, too!

I believe the problem was that the package name had a space in it (it was "The Falls", the name of my waterfall map.) I changed it to "The_Falls" and it worked fine!

Moral of the story: No spaces in packages, terrain layers, or file names!
    Use underscores!

This doesn't have much to do with what you asking but to save you from future problems when you make a custom asset and import it into UDK do not use any of !@#$%^&*() even if it allows you to the clipboard will not recognize it and will not allow you to copy and paste.

Hello anyone who is interested! I just fixed my problem and it appears you can't have whitespace in any of the naming groups: Package name, group name, and name. I tried to use MyAssetsPackage, Sound Cues, Ambient_Sound_Cue and it failed no matter what I typed in for the name. So after that I decided to see if it was the group name and once I changed it to SoundCues it accepted it. I hope this helps someone.

Just think like this: Spaces in names for any aspect/file for anything game related is bad. Even if it seems like it would work, it's best to still avoid doing it.

I have this so engrained that it tends to carry over to no -game related stuff too haha.
