The Locust: Emergence Day

The Humans of Sera, knew little of peace, and what it brought about. After years and years of destruction and death, ranging from the days of 'The Age of Armageddon' it came in the form of the 'Era of silence', although that was overshadowed by 'The Pendulum Wars'. Even, so, they sought out peace, but to their dismay, they only brought about more death & destruction.

On Emergence Day, a day where the Hordes and Hordes of Locust, erupted out of the Hollows of Sera. Where they had long kept waiting. In less then 24 hours, the Locust overwhelmed the worn torn and broken Humans of Sera. Destroying their population in a matter of days. The Locust brought with them, forces never seen nor ever thought up of except for in ancient fairy tales.

The Humans, having lost control in this ever losing battle, came up with a plan in which they made sure the Locust could never get their hands on Sera, they unleashed the Hammer of Dawn. Satellite projected beams of death, came crashing down upon Sera, destroying the Locust monstrosities and giving Sera 'back' to the Humans.

Although, it came with a heavy price, many decisions had to be made, and the Humans had to kill their own people in order to survive the attack, in order to let their species continue to exist.

Now a new kind of war continued to rage on, no longer is it about land or money or power, yet it is about survival. For both species, it is a fight to the death, and where only one winner can come out the victor.

I know it was short, but I wanted it to be short so people would not shy away from it.

Physiology

A typical locust is a hulking brute of a creature, nearly 7 feet in height, though many are larger. They are bipedal, muscular creatures, with extremely tough skin. They are considerably more bulky than a normal human, and notably stronger physically. Their bones are heavier and show signs of extensive thickening, showing that the locust humanoids are all but bred for war. Grenadiers show further toughening and occasionally scarification, which appears to further toughen the locust's flesh.
Locust blood is a deep reddish-orange in coloration, indicating a high percentage of platelets in the system and hinting that their blood clots quickly (more likely than not to keep them in the fight longer). A locust has multiple internal organs, as hinted by hearing multiple heartbeats from a given locust when they run or are at critical health). This, likewise, hints at an active attempt to breed locust towards combat survival. Locust require oxygen like any other species, though they seem somewhat more resistant to environmental hazards (more likely than not due to their harsh environment).
Locust have large eyes with good depth perception in spite of the fact that they are a subterranean race. They have a noted vulnerability to flash overcompensation response (flash-blindness), a weakness many offset with polarized goggles or blinders. Some subspecies have particularly strong eyesight and incredible depth perception; it is strongly hinted that locust can see perfectly in total darkness, and most seem to possess superior senses of smell.

The Locust: Drones

Background:

Drones are the most common among the collaboration of races known as the Locust Horde, playing the role of standard infantry on the battlefield.

They appear to have a muscular humanoid body and white skin due to their underground lifestyle. They are born and bred for combat, fearless even when outnumbered. It is believed that the Locust Berserkers are the female of this race. If this happens to be the case one has to wonder how drone/berzerker courtship is accomplished due to the tendency of any berserker to automatically rip absolutely anything within arms reach limb from limb and the way drones around Berserkers seem terrified of them. It is speculated that Drones breed by rape as Colonel Hoffman said that Berserkers are tied down and are then raped.

Drones use the massive tunnel network under the planet's surface for troop movement and can quickly create portals almost anywhere on the surface called Emergence Holes, which they often use to surprise their enemies.

Drones are the standard foot trooper for the Locust, with the characteristic use of numbers and fearless fighting, willingness to sacrifice themselves by the hundreds to kill a single Gear. they are often armed with Hammerbust rifles, Boltok pistols and sometimes Lancers. They also can be armed with Shotguns and grenades, called appropriately Grenadiers. Some are equipped with infared goggles and Sniper rifles which are, obviously, Snipers. Others are trained to use Troika Machine Guns and have special helmets that deflect enemy fire. Elite Drones are the Theron guards. Superior to average drones, they are armed with Torque Bows.

Although tactically minded, fully capable of operating infantry weapons and generally making good use of whatever cover is available to them, most drones tend to exhibit rather low intelligence and it may be stupidity as well as lack of imagination, rather than bravery that keeps them driving forward into even the worst odds. they are also not very articulate, expressing almost everything they do (which isn't much) through single word statements and unspecific bellowing.

Theron Guards and Grenadiers have somewhat different facial structures than normal drones, appearing to have longer teeth. Therons also tend to speak in a hissing manner totally different from the deep throated yelling of normal drones and Grenadiers. One can only speculate as to whether these are just differences in fashion, differences in rank or whether the two are slightly different organisms

Drones have the same anatomy as humans with ribs, collarbones, trachea, esophagus, aorta, guts, and Groin.


**TRIVIA**

In Gears of War 2, the Grappler drone and Cyclops drones wear different helmets. Cyclops will almost always be wielding a Lancer, while the Grappler seems to have just emerged from the sinkhole in the final act. This may be a helmet that helps them see better after just stepping into daylight.

Another Drone variant was set to appear in Gears of War named the Locust Hunter. Armed with a Torque Bow, it was eventually scrapped in favor of the Grenadier, and the Torque Bow was given to the Theron Guard.

It is possible that the reason many Drones wear goggles or visors is because of their subterranean evolution, in the same manner that all Locust humanoid species are albino due to lack of sunlight. Drones engaging in battle on the surface of Sera would most likley be deterred by the rays of the sun and thus wear protective goggles. Although this theory does not account for Drones wearing goggles encountered in the Hollow or for some Drone units without goggles on the surface (the latter may be accounted for variety amongst individuals).

Often referred to as "grubs" by COG soldiers.

All Drones have the Locust emblem branded into their right shoulders.

In Aspho Fields the book Hoffman mentioned to Tai that they bred by tying the beserkers down and then "raping" them. this would either be speculation or traumatic on Hoffmans part.

Here's some information on our #1 Enemy (next to the lambent of course)

Gears are equipped with a range of protective armor, most notably the bullet-resistant cuirass and compatible apparatus-equipped helmet that provides protection from inhaled chemicals, blunt trauma, shrapnel, and low-caliber or poorly aimed bullets. However, the helmets offer no protection from a high-caliber Longshot round[6].

Most COG armor cuirasses have uniform blue or gray paint jobs and an imprinted Crimson Omen. The cuirasses also use a series of identification lights that glow blue for easy identification by allied units. All COG armor curiasses are fitted with back-mounted magnets for carrying equipment. COG armor may be power armor or semi-powered armor, as it is stated the armor uses servos to assist the user. COG armor cuirasses are in high demand; while most Gears use conventional models, older models have been issued to meet the demand.

There are a variety of helmets that Gears wear. While the three known helmet types can be used as normal infantry soldier helmets, some are specialized for certain tasks. In Gears of War, the helmet worn by Anthony Carmine appears to be a regular infantry soldier helmet. In Gears of War 2, Benjamin Carmine appears to be wearing a sniping helmet, due to the fact that Benjamin was Delta Team's sniper and goggles are present on the helmet. However, the helmet could simply be an upgraded version of the earlier helmet from Gears of War, as most of the Gears wearing it do not carry sniper rifles. A third helmet, however, is only sometimes seen in the campaign but serves an unspecified purpose..

Gears are typically armed with Lancer Assault Rifles, Bolo Grenades and Snub Pistols (as sidearms), but also use Gnasher Shotguns and Longshot Sniper Rifles.

Some Gear squads have access to bot units, but the high level of attrition the bot units have suffered combined with with the ongoing Locust-Human War have made replacement components for bot units to be an increasingly-uncommon commodity. Currently, only elite and high-level squads are entrusted with bot units, though many Gear units are alleged to make use of salvaged replacements when available.

Bot units used to be common, even expendable, equipment for Gear squads. Colonel Hoffman once stated "I can remember when these things came by the crate load." All bot units have a name, such as Frank, Bruce, or Jack, Delta Squad's bot[7].
