You can't live with women. You can't live without women.
Fuzzy logic example.
Can you provide a screenshot of your Task Manager?

What cpu and how much ram do you have?

I use a Core 2 Duo t7300@2.00GHz with 4GB of ram (3GB available because of Windows Vista 32 bit).
The CPU usage vary from 62% to 72% in idle.

Running the Unreal Editor on a laptop with that processor is definitely going to cause some strain. It's probably going to be even worse when you start building things in the editor.

What is the technical reason? That's not a technical reason. I use Maya, Blender, ZBrush without problems on this laptop and with good performance. I have also used 3D Studio Max and Luxology Modo without problems (and also flawlessly). Why not the Unreal Editor? A program that uses 72% of the CPU while being in IDLE has a problem. It has nothing to do with being a laptop or not. Oh, and the Far Cry 2 Editor workd like a charm too.

I'm very surprised that you can run all of those programs on that laptop without any problems. A 2.0 Ghz processor is the minimum requirement to even play this game. I realize that the processor is mainly used when you render something, so maybe the Unreal Editor wasn't optimized for mobile processors.

Probably you have no clue of what CPU is. The game runs all maxed out at 30-35fps (1280x800). The 2Ghz requirement is on a single core CPU (pentium 4 or equivalent) and not a dual core processor, which is much more powerful. Your CPU, for example, at default settings is less powerful than a mobile T7300@2.00Ghz.

hey mrjordanI have a dell xps M1710 notebook C2D 2.66GHz. This was my best rig till august last year. For the 8 months it did unreal editor duty, it always ran the processor at 70-100% even when editor was doing nothing and minimised, so i dont think your installation is at fault. I put it down to unreal editor greedily seizing resources. I dont have any tech info on the prob for you though sorry, although i have seen DGUnreal say that it tends to seize memory.
Just tried it out on my quadcore desktop (Q9450 @2.66GHz) and its using 27-36% CPU total with an uncomplicated map thats very early in development. No real time preview is on. Investigation of task manager shows UT3 is using 26-30% of CPU
Ive always just considered that its part of the cost of mapping. Good to see your more pro active ill check back here in case im doing something wrong
This signature would self destruct but your anti-virus has already defused it.. :/
Proudly part of Team Domination. UT3DOM v5.0 is out now! (Code Improvements + 4 missing maps return.)

UnrealEd is a hog of resources, it will easily max out Dual Cores, on a quad core it will sit around 50-60% idle. When you build though, it can take all four cores to 100% and that means it will easily do the same to a Dual core.
It does it's job how ever and works.
