Map - Deathmatch (PC/PS3) DM-Eclipse (Work in progress)

After some trying with the editor something good came into existence! I really have no idea where I am going with this. The main idea is that it is some sort of building with alot of windows inside an asteroid. When you look up there is an eclipse going on. It is my first map ever with unreal edit so if im doing something wrong please let me know

I´m lacking inspiration right now.. maybe because its 5 in the morning over here and i have not slept yet. I would like to go on now, but the ingame preview thingy keeps crashing and I dont want to reboot my pc. First I´m gonna get some sleep.

Here are some pics of the only two rooms i have made so far.

Screens look good. Definitely looks like a keeper when it's released, but...

I already made a DM-Eclipse a while back and it is going to be released as final with a map pack that I am working on. See here: http://utforums.epicgames.com/showth...ght=DM-Eclipse

Not that I personally care about the name being the same and I dunno how many people will even play it, but you could see that there could be potential problems if someone added this to a server and they had the other map installed.... they'd get the incorrect version error

I could try to think of another name for my map, but nothing really comes to mind, as I had already changed the name once...

At any rate, I am looking forward to seeing the end result... too bad you didn't include any screens with the sky if it does in fact look like that first pic there, looks sweet.

You typically won't want to have the same material in the same room used on a wall and a floor as it will look a little weird when viewed from certain angles, so you may want to think about swapping out the texture for something that blends better with the surrounding deco.

The only time where this is not true is usually with textures that are more or less a solid color and have only finer details to break them up; like concrete, asphalt, tile, etc (though making the floor look more worn than the walls helps a lot as it shows the wear and tear from all the traffic on it)

    Just a thought

I see. I don´t think you have to do anything about your maps name. I should have looked if a map had this name already. I´m going to find a solution for this. As for the wall and floor textures, they are really different. Maybe you can see it at another angle.

    Quite interesting map.

Good that you're willing to change the name of the map, it shows that you're open mind and won't do the same mistake twice. Always looking for existing map name before announce yours.

For the map itself, IMO, you should emphases on the open space feeling of the map and remove the wall tech meshes. What you have done with the windows is very innovative, look like you've got inspired by DM-Marauder. More, you can provide the player to go outside the windows. I suggest that because there is only few maps that take advantage of natural beauties putting the emphasis on tech, industrial, sci-fi meshes to much. It's quite repetitive and somehow quite boring.

Other thing, the white lighting don't seem to fit. I mean there is yellow lights (presuming they're coming from above), so that's fine, still the neon emitting white light and the meshes around are yellow is not looking good at all.

I'll follow that dev for sure

Wow, wierd. That material in the screenshot above looked like it was applied to a floor as well... maybe it's just me.

The sky through the windows looks pretty cool. I gotta agree with what stevelois said about going outside the windows there. Perhaps add a cool pickup (UDamage/Redeemer) that can be seen from inside, giving the other people time to scatter when they see it picked up.

I still think that material looks a little weird but perhaps it will look a little different/less noticeable when able to move around the map.

You should keep the name Eclipse, it's more fitting for this map than it is mine. I ended up thinking of a pretty cool new name for mine anyway.

Thanks for the feedback. I think its a good idea to be able to go outside. I´ll look into that.

    @ShadeMistress,

Are you sure? I still think you should keep your name. Im creative enough to come up with something.

OOh and I changed the room from the 1st pic.

Yeah, it's cool. I'm renaming my map to something a little more fitting for the space/floating environment. Where as your map definitely looks like it will more suit the mood for a map named "Eclipse".

That, and the fact that your eclipse looks 100% better than mine. Mine has only just started to take effect and also (realistically speaking) only looks like an eclipse from the floating platform in space, which it probably would not from the planet in the background.

New screen looks nice and the materials aren't so contrasting should make it a little less distracting in-game.

    Thanks. I appreciate it.

I made a new floor today. I have 3 floors now. Its not quite finished yet; I have only done one wall..

Here you can see the elevator that goes down.

And I changed the white texture. I´m going to leave the lights where they are for now. Just as a placeholder.

Changing the white texture is a good idea, it less contrasting.

Tile on the floor, tiles on the ceiling is not original. I would suggest to use more rocks instead of tiles.

I mean if this base is supposed to be build on a rock, or a asteroid. The map will stand out only IF you use well these features.

Im working on that. This is the first ceiling that has no windows. I dont know what I am going to do with it yet.

I made the elevator room some bigger

    Interesting pic

You can add rocks on the ceiling (like on the side), it will give the impression that the ceiling as collapse. You can add some big holes in the ceiling and walls where you use tech meshes with rocks on the floor.

You can check that map : http://utforums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=620932. You'll have a better idea of my explanations. Most of what I tired to explain are all around the map.

I have thougt of that (I have played Focus ), but this ceiling is a floor too. I think i can use rocks on their side, but i cant add holes. I think I am going to use some flat rocks so there is only a little bit of ceiling visable.

    Well, it's another solution.

If you do so, I suggest that you take a pic of that same room, put it beside the actual one and start a pool to know if the changes are better. You'll be fix

Ahhhhh, good I told you he he he

Advice : Even if it look much better, don't stop tweaking Push what you can do to you're limit and just don't stay satisfied with a small upgrade.

Now that the ceiling, walls & windows seem to look good, attack the floor.

Another advice : make sure that the foliage (or any decos) aren't disproportional. I saw that sometime, on other map, it look like it has been stretch and it doesn't look good at all. By the pic, the leaves look as big as the weapon...

This map is intense! I love it! Do you think you might make this available for ps3? That'd be sweet.

    Its screenshot time!!

You might wonder why the floor and wall textures are the same on every wall and floor. I just use them as a placeholder

This is a new room. It is far from finished yet.

This is how it is going to look like on he outside.

I made a little video. Just a walk through. In the video you can also see me trying to do an elevator jump (or whatever its called) but I fail . That is because i made the elevator swing a bit so its harder to do a good jump at the shieldbelt.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5e9WGdyf2ak

I think I have finished the basic layout of the map now and i only need to do some decorating and finetuning. It is going to be a small map for 4-8 players. I have tested it with 7 bots and me and it was perfectly balanced

So, you've made some progress finally. I watch the video and the layout look fun & simple.

Great that the exterior is low gravity.

For the keg, you should be able to reach it by double jump.

I see . You are able to make a doublejump to it, its just harder since you have to jump at the right time.
