    Default Scaling

    Im starting a new map and im trying to mkae it with exact same dimensions as the real building
    The surface area of the building it 2680 feet long by 830 feet wide.

    Does anyone know a rough conversion i can use for my first addative..

    thanks

    Or does anyone know how many feet roughly 256 is.....

    well I personally don't like to use the direct unit conversions because collision is done with a cylinder usually and its easy to snag! So you need doorways higher and wider than in real life. You will snag frequently in a hall or door 64 units wide. 96 units high is pretty much the minimum for running through a door, maybe you bounce as you run, I don't know! If you add a player skeltal mesh to your map, they are much, much smaller! So a real door is 30-32 inches wide and 78 inches high standard, fwiw.

    I can't remember where, but I seem to receall that an Unreal Unit (uu) in Unreal Tournament is 1cm. Given the dimensions Bison just brought up (real-world door), I'm not sure how accurate or fun those would be in a custom level.

    For the fun of it, I'll throw some numbers out there using the 1cm = 1uu scale:

    Bison's Numbers:
    64uu = 2.13 (passable door width)
    96uu = 3.2ft (passable door height)
    80uu = 32in = 2.66ft (real door width)
    196uu = 78in = 6.5ft (real door height)

    Your building using 1cm = 1uu:
    2680ft x 30cm = 80400uu
    830ft x 30cm = 24900uu

    I haven't tested this in editor, but if you wanted to use those numbers you could get a pretty good sense of if they work or not by making some quick BSP. Size it up and see how it looks; I'd suggest making some doorways to see if it feels right.

    Let us know how it goes! I'm kind of curious, but am at work right now so I can't check this for myself until later.

    The UnrealWiki (http://wiki.beyondunreal.com) says that 1 meter is 51 Unreal Units...
    Don't know how many feet 1 meter is...
    currently under development:

    VCTF-RooftopWars
    VCTF-City (working title)

    Maybe getting a direct glassfiber connection to my house

    Sized to a 6 foot tall player model it should be 16uu per foot but like a previous post says you got to add more uu to take collision boundaries into account. In my past experimentation, you should consider at least 20uu per foot - or even 24uu per foot might be the easiest to measure on the UnrealEd grid settings.

    The Photon laser tag 3D scale recreation (see link in my signature below) that I made from actual blueprints for the original Unreal was at 16uu per foot and was probably too tight. For the original UT, I completely redid it using 20uu per foot and it felt better but had to use 4uu grid spacing and less in some spots! I probably could have done it in 24uu per foot easier. If you go too big then things in the vertical direction mess with you for shooting down over solid railings from upper decks, etc.

    THanks Ikaros, I wondered how you did that! I just checked Wiki again and they say Deus definitely uses 16 units/ foot but UT3 is 12 but this "feels cramped". The biggest problems I've encountered with things looking strange are: stairs made of bsp - (you can make the steps bigger and stick a ramp blocking volume over for better collision) and when I stuck a skeleton skeletal mesh into my level -> it looks miniscule!

    I read someplace a UT3 level designer saying it's technically 16uu/foot but that's academic. This is always a problem making Real life scale levels so you have to compromise for gameplay and player mobility. So otherwise, make design your level in an Unreal way and somewhat larger than life!

    1 Unreal Unit = 2 centimeters.
    But due to the way things are rendered you usually have to go about 1.5x real-world.

    Search the forums, I've only answered this a dozen times...

    all this talk of feet and inches, my brain hurts lol

    I go by the scale of 55 units = 1m .. seems to work
