Movie (PC) An attempt at UT3 Machinema

    Hi folks;

I figured the best way to introduce myself would be to put a link up to what I've been working on. Over the past couple of weeks I've been trying to figure out UnrealEd with a view to making machinema movies - it strikes me as one of the malleable systems out there (albeit one of the more complicated) and offers a lot of potential.

So here's the pilot of the series I'm working on; Losing You. Episode one ('Overboard') should pretty much set the tone and mood. It's different to a lot of the other machinema out there right now (It's not a Red Vs Blue rip-off and isn't a series of painful jokes shot in Halo 3 with funny voices) and stars a solitary mining droid. When I've figured out how to get facefx going and can convince my friends to stop stalling and make me some custom characters, we may see some shows with speech in them.

    Meanwhile, enjoy.

The intro is amazingly well done, some pretty cool effects and kept me interested, but after 2 mins it's just not entertaining. Looks more like a demostration...Think the problem there is that the bot doesn't have any real features to show some kinda emotion or the joke was too predictable... With the introduction with more characters and stuff i think it'll get interesting seeing what you can do.

Yep - fair point. I wasn't sure that the pace after 2 minutes was going to work, especially after such a frantic introduction... but the only way to find THAT out is to show it. So I did.

Thanks for the feedback, it'll certainly come in handy on future episodes.

Eep - that hadn't occured to me. Can I use the argument that I live in a studio?

i just don't want people to get the wrong idea. a studio is where professionals work and a higher quality would be expected. try a name like ..... Team instead of studio

i don't want to knock you down keep up the good work

Nah, it's a good point and well taken. It's just a name I've been using since my days in Lionhead's The Movies rather than an attempt to pretend I'm a team of professionals.

I like it! It's mildly amusing when you see the robot encounter the water, but then when the camera pans out you realize that he's trapped with nothing but water in any direction, which made me feel rather sorry for the poor thing.

What map was the intro set in? It looks fun!

Some sort of communication will add a lot to your video(s).

Watch Star Wars(any of the movies will do). R2-D2 doesn't talk but by the sound and tone of his beeps you can get the basic idea of what he's saying. I think a set up like that would work very well for your robot.

Like in Empire when R2 get spit out by the monster in the water, the sound would work for when your robot gets zapped away from from the water

Edit: Putting this in general chat will probally get you a few more hits

The map is one I built from scratch. In fact, building the maps and dressing them took a LOT more time than the Matinee sequences. I was toying with the idea of tweaking it for playing in and releasing it... but the drive to do so is kind of damped by the fact that neither me nor my friends are able to host UT3 games, no matter which solution we follow.

And good catch on the communication - I'll have to see what I can come up with for the next one.

I like it, and yes I think you need a little connection with the spectator, but it takes a very unique path, very different than those we are used to, keep it up...

    btw, what's the song name?
    Costa Rica...

    Why thank you.

the song was Losing you by Little Birdy, from the album Big Big Love. I can't seem to find a music video for that song, but you can see another song from the same album here if you wish. I used it because (a) it's a lovely song and (b) I can't set EVERYTHING to Nine Inch Nails.
