Default And now for something completely different... WIP Snapshots

Seeing interlock's thread made me want to post this. I've only been working on it 3 days but it is coming along fast. Welcome to the first Gears winter map.

I wanted to create something different and with my own visual style. All of the terrain textures are created by myself.

First I did a texture test to see which of my custom textures would look best. Some of them looked like garbage but I found some really nice ones. This first picture is a nice one but I believe the contrast is not strong enough so It is not used.

This is the texture scheme I am using plus one other dirty snow texture not pictured.

Of course the bsp needs lighting it is almost black at the moment. Also some ugly black shadows all around. Some of the rock mesh textures are overstretched because they are so big and I need to think of a solution for that. Also the bsp cylinders notable in the second to last picture are not final -- they will be a bit more complex than that. Also the mountains in the back will have a better job of texturing.

It is a going to be a real challenge making the gameplay for this good because it is such an atypical setup for a gears map. I will have indoor base that the player goes into pretty soon so I can get that tight gameplay we need. Thoughts please! I am most curious about what you think of the concept, if anyone is interested in creating their own snow maps, what you think of overcoming problems in atypical map designs to create a rewarding gears experience etc

Awesome! A snowy map.. That's a great idea.

Shots look really cool - it's coming along nicely. But alas, I have a 360 and may not experience this, but for GoW2, a snowy map would be lovely.

I thing that these screens are it better than Halo 3. I was doing terrain test and all the time my editor crash. I have a lot of experience in terrain design coz I have been using Terragen for Backgrounding 3D videos. A terrain like this was my first idea but my editor get my wish down.

AMAZING MAP. THAUR PLEASE KEEP IN TOUCH.

Looks cool! I also wanted to experiment with the terrain but have yet to get it
to work without crashing. Maybe you should try out some custom materials for
the big rocks, that way you can change the scaling of the texture and make it
    look sexy. Anyway, looking good!

Looks real nice, I say keep at it and do not give up. Detail the living hell out of it and create a real nice outdoor feel to it. If I were you I would try to avoid putting a base or building somewhere there, just have some huge rocks, debris, and some broken down ravens, etc. as cover. Also snow-covered hills for cover would be good, just make the map seem as if the COG's and their Ravens went down in a snow storm and now they Locust have come up out of the ground to kill them. Just an idea, I think you should definitely keep at this, great idea and it looks nice.
