I'm not sure if there is a way, I would ordinarily suggest you simply download the patch again from www.gearsofwar.com/gearsPC and run it manually. If it runs through and appears to be working, you had an old version - if not, you're probably already patched up.

This is barring other problems of course, of which there is no guarantee with most posters on these boards.....

Are we certain they've got the right patch up on that link, though?

Did you try installing GearsTU.exe and extracting the file Update.exe? It worked for me, but make sure you've manually downloaded one of the patches first. It can be found here: http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US...s/default.aspx Their latest is Decmber 2007 (idiots), so I guess we'll have to wait for them to realize that they need to post the patch from Feb 25, 2008 on their website.

GearsTU.exe can be googled as I don't think gearsofwar.com has it anymore. GameSpot does though. Let me know how that goes, Zoso.

And I'm guessing you'e never been able to even play the game after you bought it?

Graphics is corrupted under the "Options--> Credits" menu:
    http://utenti.lycos.it/darkcg/images/forum/gow_bug.jpg

    Also:
    stuttering, stuttering, stuttering, stuttering...

Tried this on Geforce 8600M GT 256MB (768MB TurboCache) with Forceware 169.09, 174.20, 174.12 and 173.65 with no luck.
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7300@2Ghz
    2GB of ram
Windows Vista Home Premium Build 6000 32 bit
    Italian version of the game

The game seems to run well but the stuttering thing is so frustrating. I refuse to play a game in this condition.

I was having the "DVD not found" error since I applied the update, but I fixed it!
All I had to do was disable my virtual drive and the game started. Haven't played yet, but I'm hoping I'll stop losing my saved games this time around. =P

    1) Cannot really play game when logged into Windows LIVE, this began with the last patch, worked flawlessly before. Though I can get 'In game' after about a ten minute load time, it stutters and the sound does not work, on top of that I get a pretty bad frame rate. However, if I use the same account, but pull the internet so a connection is not made with the live servers I can still play with my Live account, so long as I am not connected to live. My two other 'non-live' accounts work fine in single player also.

Also, if I reinstall and do not update it works fine.

    2)

No, don't see how we can be certain while we're on this side of the fence, but I do know that the size of the GearsTU on http://www.gearsofwar.com/gearspc has changed since I last updated back in January. It was a 3Mb file, now it a 6Mb file. Something's different.

Sorry, Zoso, I was mistaken. Gearsofwar.com does have the file and it can be found here http://www.gearsofwar.com/gearspc . This is a new update eve though it has no version number in the file name but the size is bigger so it's got more stuff. For instructions, go to this other post of mine: http://forums.epicgames.com/showpost...5&postcount=54

Let me know how it goes. This worked for me because I was on a Windows XP Pro with SP2.

Hey I'm having troubles with Gears of War for the PC. When I bought it and took the time it needed to install it then patched up, I got the game up and running and it was working like a charm. Although I just have graphical glitches cuz I'm not running off a surplus computer, the game still runs fine. This glitch happened to me once before by the way. At some point for no reason, when I tried to start the game, the Startup.exe process (I checked it in the Task Manager) cancels as the game tries to fire up. It looks fine at first but stops completely. When I checked the Processes in the task manager, it showed up then just disappeared. And now I can't get the game to run. This happened to me once before but I reinstalled it then it worked fine for a week or two, then it did it again but I tried reinstalling it 2-3 times now and it still won't work. Can somebody please help me?

    Here are my specs:
    GeForce 8600 GTS
    1 Gig of RAM
AMD Athalon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ 2.21 GHz
    Windows XP Pro SP2

Default Gears issues with new update

    Hi everyone,

I work on the Gears of War for Windows team and wanted to let everyone know that we have been watching the forums and are investigating all the issues people are reporting.

While I can't respond to all the problems today I can address a few things and also provide some suggestions for people that may at least get some functionality back to them while we find out exactly what is going on.

    1) If you are running the Russian or Eastern European versions of Gears of War then you will be unable to install the update. The Eastern European versions of the game include the Polish, Czechoslovakian, and Hungarian language versions of Gears of War for Windows. This has no impact on single- or multiplayer gameplay/connectivity. For example: a Russian version of the game will still be able to connect to any other version of the game regardless of if the user has installed the newest update or not.

    2) Error messages and possible solutions:

ERROR: "Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match."

INFORMATION : It is likely that you are attempting to install the update on a Russian or Eastern European version of Gears of War for Windows. The information regarding the compatibility of this update with those language versions was inadvertently not posted along with the patch. While the error message is a little unclear when it appears it means that the patch did not get applied and your Gears of War for Windows installation should continue to operate correctly.

Even though the update does not apply to the Russian or Eastern European versions the game will continue to operate properly and there is no impact on the ability to play with any other Gears of War PC player from any region.

If you are getting this error message on a version of the game other than Russian or Eastern European it means the patch found some inconsistancies in the files that it is supposed to update so, rather than overwriting them it chooses to not install.

ERROR: “I was able to play before I updated with the latest patch and now the game doesn’t launch.”

INFORMATION: If you were able to play prior to installing the update but cannot get into the game after the update there is a way to revert back to the previous game state. This may help some of you return to a playable state.

CAUTION: If there are multiple versions of unpatch.bak make sure to use the most recent unpatch.bak file, using an older version may cause more problems with your Gears of War for Windows installation and possibly require a reinstallation of the game. You can find out which is the newest version by checking the time/date stamp.
CAUTION: This will impact your ability to connect and play games through Games for Windows – LIVE and should be considered as a last resort.
CAUTION: You should only perform these steps if your Gears of War for Windows game was working prior to installing the update.

    1) Look in the directory where you installed Gears of War for Windows. If the update got applied there will be a directory named "BACKUP". Within that directory is a file called "unpatch.bak".
    2) If there are multiple “unpatch” files look for the most recent and change the name to “unpatch.bat".
    3) Double click the unpatch.bat file.
    4) When the update is reverted you should be able to launch Gears of War for Windows.
    5) NOTE: When you launch, if you log into Games for Windows – LIVE it will prompt you to update again. Decline the update. By declining the update you will be unable to connect to LIVE but you should be able to exercise any single player functionality.

ERROR: When I launch the game I receive and error message. In the title bar of the error message it says “The DVD-ROM could not be located.” The text in the error message is: “Please insert the correct DVD-ROM, click OK, and restart the application.”

INFORMATION: There are actually two unique errors that use this same text. The first error has a red “X” icon and the second version of the error has a yellow exclamation point ("!"). In a nutshell: for some reason Gears cannot find your DVD (or the completely wrong DVD is in the drive) or has found a DVD that doesn't look like it is the right Gears of War disc.

Possible solutions: A member of our own community, Saeferth discovered that using a virtual drive may be causing this error. Disabling any virtual drives has solved this problem for several people now.

Saeferth notes that running in compatibilty mode may also cause

ERROR: I am running a version of Windows Vista and do not get a Gears of War for Windows icon group in my start menu when I install the game or any of the updates.

INFORMATION: On Windows Vista we do not build a program group of icons for Gears of War for Windows. Instead we place an icon in the Windows Game Explorer.

ERROR: I am not prompted to install an update when I log into Games for Windows – LIVE.

INFORMATION: Either the update was already successfully applied or you are running the Russian or Eastern European version of the game. Games for Windows – LIVE knows that this update is not compatible with those versions so does not prompt to update your installation.

As I said, we’re looking into the other issues folks have reported in this thread. Thank you for your patience!

    Dear Epic

I bought this game just one day after its realease. When I got home with itI found out that it didn't work. It took me around 1 month to get this game to work. I wanted to play some gears this evening and I saw there was a patch. Well I finally thought that al of the problems would be gone now. After the patch installed I got an error saying that I have to put the original gears of war dvd in the disk tray. I was like : " Great work epic "

First you make a game that runs like ****, then you make a patch that even disables the good working versions. Now I fully understand why Cliffy B doesn't like the pc anymore.

Well epic, I know you don't care what I typed but please just fix the damn game or leave it like it was. I am glad I at least got my singleplayer achievements before this stupid patch came out.

And for further help : I got the "yellow exclamation point"

WOW!!! Finally a person who consider us saying something.
    Thank you.

We already know there are some communication problems between Epic/Microsoft and us. We all know you're busy but a word, sometimes, worth more than 5 consecutive (bad) patches.
Not speaking to users, continually closing threads, etc. is acting like... uhm... locusts.
After all, we are all (unpaid) testers.

CAUTION: If there are multiple versions of unpatch.bak make sure to use the most recent unpatch.bak file, using an older version may cause more problems with your Gears of War for Windows installation and possibly require a reinstallation of the game.

    Thanks for the info!!!

Mmmmm. Would have been better to have an option that let the user choose what he/she wants.

As I said, we’re looking into the other issues folks have reported in this thread.
Nice to hear this. By the way, don't forget the stuttering problem
I don't know why, but I have the sensation this game has memory leaks sometimes...

    Thank you for your patience!
We have a lot of patience, but I guess you have to fortify your quality assurance departments for next games
Thanks to you for your words/support and for this wonderful game. Hope it will become rock solid and bug free.

I have the North American version (canada) and I still get this error... anything else that could cause it? I can't sign in to windows live at all anymore.

I hope a fix comes soon. My problem is that the game was actually updated and ran fine for a while. Now all of a sudden it's telling me I have to update. So what ended up happening after several tries is that I uninstalled and reinstalled the game. Then ran the update. But still get the message that it needs to update and I do have the "backup" folder in the game directory. So now I'm really confused. Here are my specs:

    AMD Athlon FX-60 dual core
    windows xp professional
    4GB of DDR RAM
    ATI HD 3870 video card
No mods done at all. Just a straight install.

ok because of my crash at downpour i was unable to progress in the game. ive noticed that ive played a co-op game at a later point in this chapter thus letting me play the game. why the hell does downpour just crash???

ive also done some chapter 4-5 on co op, i tried these levels and they seem to work fine. its just downpour. oh and i think the latest update totally got rid of the remaining stutter. so im a little happy. now i can see the new content but not get the achievement for chapter 3 because of downpour lol. and this is probably the most positive post Ive made on this forum

It still crashes. Very irritating. Its hard enough to find someone to play coop with and when you finaly do and start playing the game crashs about 15 minutes in. Wasn't like this before the the last update. It seems to happen less if your connected to a good fast host. If your connected to a laggy host it crashes more frequently.

I may have to reinstall.. but I don't want to lose my checkpoints or my achievements.

My game also now runs because I removed my virtual drive. It solved the 'Insert correct DVD' problem. I'm running on windows vista 32bit if that's any help.

The game actually works for me now! For those that are having the crashing errors and are blaming the game, it has nothing to do with the game or any of the updates. The problem is most likely with your computer. I found a post in these forums about bad RAM which causes this issue. Gears of War uses up alot of RAM. If one of your RAM sticks is bad, you won't know unless you run a game that uses up alot of it or if you test it with something like MemTest. I figured this wasn't the problem for me but gave it a try anyway. I ran MemTest on my pc while all of my sticks were still in the pc. I have 2 1gb memory sticks. When I ran the MemTest it said that something was wrong with the memory. So I took one of them out and ran the test again. No errors. So I decided to reinstall Gears of War. Started the game and OMG it works! I have made it past the parts that crash. The last few weeks it crashed as soon as it opened up. Now I can play it all day long if I wanted without any crashes! It finally works how it should.

    1. I lost my game save (had it completed on Insane!!!) and the stuttering just got MUCH WORSE than before. Every 5 seconds, FPS drops to as low as 5.
    2. Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz, 3GB Ram, 8800 GT
    3. Windows Vista 32-bit Home Premium
    4. No mods.
    5. English
    6. Windows Live.

Please fix this buggy and unstable game. Its been many months, and it's still a nightmare to play. Was it even tested before release?!

Thanks Saeferth and DavidM74 for confirming this may address some of the DVD not located errors!

I'll add that to my larger post.

For general troubleshooting please make sure you've updated to the December version of Games for Windows - LIVE. This can be found at:

Games For Windows - LIVE Download page

This update can also help with some of the crashes.

    Hi Sith,

Can you tell me if it says that you need a Games for Windows - LIVE update or a product update?

You can try manually updating by getting the Games for Windows - LIVE update here:
    http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US...s/default.aspx

And the Gears of War for Windows update here:
http://gearsofwar.com/GearsPC/ (click on the title update link near the top).

Run the updates and, if there are no problems, try launching the game. This time it should let you in without prompting for any updates.

The reason you may have a BACKUP directory already is because this is the 2nd update for the title. If you installed the first update the process will have created a BACKUP of the system prior to overwriting any files during the first update.

    Make sense?

GearsHelper, is there anything you can say to me to help with the stutter problem ?

    1. Despite applying the patch, the game still asks for an ingame update where if I accept, it either zips to the end and freezes, or zips to the end and sits there till it says the patch cannot be downloaded, signing out of live. Same thing happened with the first patch.

The other thread regarding the game saves issue has been closed, due to a patch being released.

Rather than make a new topic I will just post here.

How am I to get the patch that fixes this problem? I assumed it would come up as a mandatory update the next time I load Gears, it has not. I am from the United Kingdom.

Is it recommended that I download this and install manually? (where from?) or just wait until the update hits G$W LIVE on Gears, assuming it will do?

    Hi GearsHelper,
Thanks for the response. It is telling me I need the product update. Now as I had stated, the game was updated and then all of a sudden started looking for an update again. I uninstalled and then reinstalled the game to start with a blank slate. I did download the update file from the gears of war site. Now, this updater does not work for me by itself. All it does is open a dos window and then my BIOS updater comes up. No biggie, I dealt with this before. What I have to do is open the updater file with winrar and then run the file (setup.exe I think) from there. Then it updates. I've done all that and it's still asking me to update the game. It's worked before and I don't understand why it's not working now. And I do have the latest Windows Live version (from December). Any ideas?

Same exact problem I'm having. Hopefully GearsHelper will have an idea for us to fix this.

    Hi Waynej,

You can try the manual update method by going to http://gearsofwar.com/GearsPC/ (click on the title update link near the top). This is the exact same thing you would get going through the update process via Games for Windows - LIVE.

Remember this update doesn't work with the Russian or Eastern European versions of the game (just because you're in the UK doesn't mean it is safe for me to assume you'd be using the english language version of the game )

    Hi Dead,

When you are doing this update are you still in the LIVE dialog in game (has a little green bar that progresses then stops) or are you in the update UI where the game has shut down to the desktop and a small rectangular window with a red progress bar that appears on your Windows desktop?

Also, can you tell me if a "BACKUP" directory was created in your Gears of War install directory and, if so, what the timestamp is on the most recent of the "unpatch.bak" file?

    Thanks.
