    Unhappy Download speeds for redirect content

    How fast can you receive, say, a 10MB map?

    I've setup redirection on my own Linux-box on a dedicated 40Mbit line, and it takes me about 5 minutes to receive 10MB. Using uz2.gameservers.net/ut3/ I get similar speeds.

    I tried various values for MaxClientRate and MaxInternetClientRate in UTEngine.ini, including 1000000 (yes, 1 million bps). I realize compression is unavailable, but a phat pipe(tm) should do the trick, speed-wise.

    What's the deal? Anyone?

    What is the upload speed on your 40Mbit line?
    I dont think that MaxClientRate and MaxInternetClientRate has anything to do with the redirection or dload speed. I could be wrong.
    Could be that your redirection is not working and you are dloading the file from the game server.
    I can dload 25MB map from my redirect which is set up on my website in less the 2 min.

    Make sure UseCompression is set to False, otherwise you're forcing clients to download from your server.

    Try downloading directly from the redirect server via a web browser and see how long it takes for the same map. In the game it should go at the same speed in theory.

    gameservers.net redirect is not the fastest thing out there really. Ask your game host for a redirect that is faster?

    Not very fast....bummer aint it? Compression is off so your map downloads will take longer here is more info...........

    Compression will be in the next patch. Thats why I pulled custom maps off my server. Not too many users are going to wait 5 mins just to download a map. Sucks Huh?

    uz2.gameservers.net/ut3/ is very fast for me. When i download maps from the redirect with my browser i get a solid 1000-1200k , which is my max download speed.

    In game when the maps download , it appears to be just as fast.
    If it's slow , then your ini isn't set up right , and it is pushing them from your server , not the redirect .
    (i had a little trouble with this at first . i discovered MaxInternetClientRate doesn't do anything to speeds of non redirected server transferring (or redirected) . and is stuck at the 10k cap .. but i figured out how to get the redirect to work via. these forums (i dont remember what i was doing wrong at first)

    Now if only epic would FIX THE INVALID URL problem! ..

    the download speed also depends how far you are from the redirection server. If you are in california and u downloading from gameservers.net redirect server which is based in netherlands country i don't think u will download at max speed.
    Also depends of peering relationships between your ISP and other autonomous systems.

    Yeah this error is really a problem. I think they should release a small fix for this problem (shouldn't be difficult) but as it is often said: "When it's done"..

    afaik there working onit for the 1.2 patch until then you have to reconnect manually

    I have been on servers in UT3 and they had fast map d/l off the server. I have been hunting for the answer w/ no luck so far on how the server admin fixed it.

    I rent and run a UT3 Server and I have my map d/l working (I rent my web space as well for my map d/l area) but it is SLOW to d/l map to player on my UT3 server and If I open the link for my map d/l area in the browser it is fast to d/l.

    And like I said I have been on UT3 servers w/ fast map d/l to the player. So I know there is a fix and I need to find it for my server. I rent / have set up a Map d/l area and it works fast just not when you connect to my UT3 server and d/l the map.

    Can someone spell it out for me how its done. What am I doing wrong?? What did I set up wrong w/ the ini or maps.

    I don't think so unless you have something set wrong where it's not reading the correct ini in the correct folder. Are you renting a server or is this your own box at home? I rent a server and what's in my post is basically all I had to do.

    A lot of people are having issues. Many have just given up even trying and moving on rather than dealing with problem after problem after problem.

    On the Sunday I fixed it that is the sad part I am not fully sure what I did lol I was so tired as I had been at it over 12 hrs that day. I was in the UTEngine changed one thing did not expect it to work and it did. Then 15min later I went to write down the setting I changed and could not find it lol. I am used to Quake 2 and Quake 4 dedicated servers. The UT3 dedicated server or a UT server is all new to me. In truth I am just one happy girl it is all fixed and good to go :} Now I need to work on my map rotation more lol.


    After my b/s to get my map d/l FAST off my UT3 server .... The best bit of info I got after the fact was some custom UT3 maps can slow down the map d/l speed off the server. I was thinking no way but I played w/ maps and found it was true, so I pulled the slow d/l maps off my server.

    Ok, we've had people state they've fixed it, people stating their problems, but no one has posted their utengine.ini file code for comparison! Hard to figure out what was done to get "it" to work without sharing the code! I myself have been fighting this for weeks. I have found many "solutions" that magically work for them, but do not work for others (myself included) All the time only sharing a tiny bit of code, but NEVER showing the whole file!

    Does anyone have a fully working redirect and is willing to share their solution AND the code?!? Very frustrating to say the least... you know Epic won't share it! So we have to.

    Most Admins, me included, have given up on the servers until the next patch. I made a post on the news area for our server, clearly stateting the probs and how I can do nothing about them, until they are properly fixed by those responsible.

    I've done my bit twice, I paid FULL price for their game and I'm paying FULL price to rent a server that hates it's players.

    We must be fools.

    Actually, unless things have drastically changed, AllowDownloads=True is the way to set that variable under [IpDrv.TcpNetDriver].

    Ucc compress is going to be fixed in the next patch so alot of this will change soon! all the files on gameservers will be uz compressed and ini changes will need to be made ect.

    I have it all fixed now. Gamerservers.com support staff fixed all the issues I had. I then found out through trails and errors that if you miss spell a map wrong it won't switch to that map. I fixed the spelling and everything is in place. Thank you guys for all the help. My server is rocking now.

    Obviously not for Ironhorse, I used to use gameservers.net for my ut2004 redirect a while ago but moved away from it because at times it would be fast and other times as slow as a snail, plus there was the problem with incorrect files and downloads that go over 100%. That same problem will be evident soon with the ut3 redirect which is more reason to get a better redirect, kill 2 birds with one stone. I never have a problem with redirect now I'm not using public.

    Anyways, if you're having problems with redirect 1st of all clarify your redirect server is working, do this by adding this to UTEngine.ini

    (This will stop the server pushing the file itself so if it can't find it on redirect you'll get an error. If set to true it will check redirect and if it can't find file there for whatever reason it will push file from the server. You don't want it to do this as you are checking your redirect is actually working.) Then add this (again UTEngine.ini)

    If you get an error when trying to download the map (it won't even start downloading, the error will come straight away) then your redirect isn't working for some reason (maybe redirect server offline or your settings are wrong somewhere). If you don't get an error and download starts and is slow then the problem is your redirect and there is nothing you can do about that other than change it.

    Once you have checked this and your redirect is working (but slowly) change AllowDownloads=False back to true and look for a better redirect.
