    MAP-CTF [Updated]CTF-ThornsASC-->Back to beta

Ok , I finished this map and I think most of you will like it. (I hope) I added some objects for dodging and also added the fountain. I initially made this map for instagib but thought maybe you weapons players would like it too so I did my best in weapons placement and health placement. The only thing I couldnt figure out how to get to work was the event sounds when you cap the flag and score. I searched and searched but no go , I even went into maps I know made that event sound and still could not get a clue. The announcer works but no event sound , sorry. I tested this map thoroughly. Played it to make sure it ran smooth and it did. I fix the bot paths and also adjusted the lighting. It may look a little gloomy to some but I felt the lighting is good for a place like that. Not to bright. Well thats about it , I hope you guys enjoy. Props to the original author whom i didnt know or I would have put his name on it.

    Enjoy,

Sorry , my bad. I removed the link because this map needs a lot of work and should not have been released as final. This being my first map ever building, well , guess I got a little excited building something i can actually play in, hard to explain. Anyways sorry again, wasnt done to cause problems.

Exactly, I was sure you finish at least one more beta version before going finall. So I did not even post about lighting in beta, i assumed you will work on it before going final.

First off , I didnt say that this map was better than anyones version of Thorns did I? I already know that there are alot better maps out there than this. Really, this is my first map I have ever made so what do you expect? To be perfect to your liking? I'm not making maps to compete with anyone , just trying to make maps so that the community have more maps to play on. Last but not least , isn't that the beauty of being able to sit at your PC and decide to click on the download or not to click on it. Isn't that beautiful? SO, Dark, if you dont like the map , dont click on it to download. Its that simple. If you dont have anything constructive to say, then really, what are you saying? Nothing, thats what your saying.

To the other guys thanks for the input , the screenies that you see are dark and there is lighting in there but i run UT brightness at 6 , world detail at 1 and the other stuff is off. Thats how I play UT , just like you see it on the screenies, its easy on my eyes. lol The shadows, yea I should have put them in , but here's the thing, some people said keep it simple , other people say put this in , put that in, I cant please everyone, but i will spend more time with the lighting and getting the shadows in the next map I make. I took some screenies with everything maxed out. I dont know if UE3 goes by the settings that you have in the game or not but I will explore that too.
    SS maxed out:

Keeping it 'simple' is one thing.
Not using any proper lighting at all is being lazy ...
With the lights being what they are I even wonder why you did bother with using those complicated textures. A simple flat grey would have been good enough.

    I'd suggest you studdy the maps in the HOLP-mappack. ( link : http://forums.beyondunreal.com/showthread.php?t=193624 )
Those guys kept it extremely simple ... but they still managed to make the maps like they belong in this engine.
Q : Why ask Epic, when we can mutate the hell out of this game ?
A : Because we need their help for the low-level stuff like a way to change the voicepacks for characters ...

And to everything else "Less Whining, more Fragging and Mutating"

I dont think you should scrap it, but maybe revert back to beta and do some additional work on the light.

Also the texture on the water seems a bit off, might be die to lack of light in the map now.

If you ever played WOW or any mmorpg. Releasing unfinished maps as mapper is equivalent of doing some stupid stuff in those games because you low level and nobody will remember. Then at 70 many of those low level funny people wake up and realize they lost or rather earned bad reputation.

Same goes for mappers, If you release maps that are not Epic quality, you not gaining any good reputation, later if you even make best map out there you will not get as many people to like it as you could if you keep good quality from beginning. Because most will not bother to open your thread and will never know about your map.

If you do not know how to do some stuff, you should read and watch tutorials, and focus just on it, because it is your weak point as mapper. I did that with kismet and matinee recently, then after i learned that i had great ideas for my 3rd map (that is thorns remake also) and did some quite fun kismet sequences.

So play with lights, shadows, volumetric beams etc, until you master it and make this map lighting gorgeous. Then release it, and play with another aspect of UT on your next map.

    Dude,
Listen to Grim , Jafo and Nawrot's words of wisdom....
Back to beta. Gotta fix the lighting.
Nawrot's got this one nailed. These are words to live by....
Life is a work in progress. Keep working at it and you'll get it right....
And Hopefully this map will look cool in the end. And your next map will Totally Rock!

@Grim,Jafo & Nawrot: If only more could give answers like this instead of flame'age the world would be much better off. Good show! Now back to working my own map...

Yeah thats what I'm going to do and take as much time as needed to get a high quality map. I appreciate your advice guys and will do more studying on this mapping thing. And also beta the hell out of it to get more input and testing. I have watched alot of videos on this and have been researching and will continue to do so. I'm gonna remove the link to the download until I get it right. Once again , thanks.
