    Map - Deathmatch (PC) DM-Agony - Beta [Pictures - Finalized][Updated 2-10-08]

If no one is working DM-Agony, I have a good start on it.

Should have a functional test in a few days. I'm going to do it from scratch and try to keep the original look and feel as best as possible, yet scale the size up some. I'm averaging about 42fps+ even with the fog on right now. The map is about 10Meg and that includes the original music track.

I hope this is still coming along ... I always like Agony and I would love to have a Beta to play this weekend if possible.

As a matter of fact it is coming along.

Here are a couple more shots as I've progressed. I'm about 70% finished with the geometry right now and hope to be near finished today or tomorrow. It's about 20-30% larger in scale.

I'll still have re-texturing to do as I want a different wall texture and then I want to look as converting some of the ramps from BSP to Statics. Right now I'm getting a solid 60fps, so that is pretty good. Don't know that there will be a beta this weekend, but probably and alpha to get some feedback.

An alpha is cool as long as you add basic bot support for us offline players to test it out. I just want to play this map ... it is looking like a good remake.

well, im also remaking this map at the moment and im in a similar progress (nearly ready)

i also kept the geometry simple first as you did, (i just converted the old version and added terrain, sky, water, fire and much foliage...). it is my first map ever... looks nice what u already have btw.

however there will always exist multible versions of maps which is a great thing, there is no reason to not making them (exept the orginal author forbids it )

it would be good when you name your remake DM-LS-Agony, so will i name my version DM-aX-Agony or whatever

That is more good news ... another remake ... the more the merrier as long as they are good. Anyway names are easy:

    - Agony2K7 or 2K8
    - Agony3
    - Agony]I[
    - AgonyNG (Next Generation)

Looking forward to both so get with it guys.

We also need Turbine and Liandri to have all the good old TDM maps back

    Default Alpha ready

Ok, here is where I am at so far.

Basically this is from scratch with minor comparisons to the original. There were no direct conversions as I wanted the scaling to be larger for UT3. It should be small enough to support regular gravity, yet large enough to allow low grav use.

I still have trim work, some texturing, a couple odd paths to clean and rework some statics, as well as the elevator lift.

Download link updated in the first post.

Thanks man .. I appreciate it ... I've been waiting all night for this map along with some others and two of you dudes have already come through and that is cool! UT3 has me so addicted.

Edit: Now I don't have the original version (still not going to pay $30 for that Anthology pack when all I want is UT99 ... I have Ut2K4 and Unreal II) so I can't give you tips on the differences but I do know the general look and feel from playing the official remake in UT2K3 so I may have something so say about the overall layout (doubtful though).

OK, first impressions I got so far:

    • The scaling is a bit too big. Not much but a little.

    • Please replace the Redeemer with the Amp!

A redeemer is part of the classic map so it belongs as part of this one ... besides Deemers are tons of fun and no Udamage has ever been part of an Agony map (well not the original and not the four I have anyway).

Textures are great but the scale is like 10x to big.

Actually I did find the redeemer in the two remakes that are supposed to be the most authentic and it is in the same spot so don't get rid of it afterall. Sorry about that. I even edited my post.

But as far as the scale ... it is much to large not just a bit. It is even larger than the UT2K4 remakes and we know how UT2K4 was not scaled correctly. This probably needs about a 20% scale down ... maybe a bit more even. But so far it looks great ... it really feels like the best remake I have so congrats so far. During the beta I will be more picky but so far so good ... you have the layout down perfectly and the weapon placement is correct and I like your use of the armor.

Well.....as I've already written the scaling is just a bit too big.

    BUT:
I remember someone here on the board wrote that UT is about 1.3 times larger than UT99 so this might be a fact for LordStrider to deal with.

    -------------
EDIT: #1 Gonna check the original version now, don't really remember myself whether there was a redeemer or not but it should be an Amp anyway

EDIT: #2 Yup, I thought so already but now I checked, there's a Redeemer in the original version but since all leagues and cups are being played without Redeemers anyway I don't really see a reason why not to implement the Amp there instead.
Because if the maps gets picket for any upcoming leeague then there will be some other guy changing it and renaming it -FE or similar.

The scale is at least 2x too big. Just look at this:
    http://xs322.xs.to/xs322/07526/Shot0004.jpg
And what is that fog all over the place? IMO you should get rid of it.
Also in UT1 version you are able to see from flak area to the belt room, now there is some wall blocking the view.

The redeemer should definitely stay and the map scale has to be decreased by no less than 35% ... I thought I was being too generous at first. I appreciate the fact that there are leagues who want to play UT3 levels but when it comes to remakes lets stay consistent please and make them as faithfully as possible at first. Then later go back and hack it to pieces if you want. I don't see the issue here. Not in this case.

it's times like this I wish I still had my copy of UT99 ... damn I should never have given it to my cousin. I know I am going to break down and buy the Anthology for one stupid game damnit.

Looks like it's casual vs. competetive again, m8.

I personally never understood the sense of that bloody Redeemer at all. It's not a weapon, it's crap.
And neither I really like the fact there always have to be so many similar map versions (-FE, -FPS etc.).

Yes and no.....in my competetive opinion I do not understand the sense in making a map which won't be played in leagues at all. If I were a mapper I'd want as many peeps play my map (not just only offline against bots).

    Anyway, back to the map

Just Played your Alpha Test, and all I can say is it feels way too big!. I felt like an Ant lol. Your build tho, but just spoils the feel at that scale imo.

As far as competitive vs casual.....it's a game. I'd rather map to capture the spirit of the original intent than to substitute. Even if one did substitute then there will always be someone else who has a differing opinion.......you can't please everyone all the time.

I already completely scaled it down a fair amount, so it is much closer to original now. As for the redeemer, sorry it's gonna stay in this version. The volume fog, I'm up in the air on, I can be talked out of that. And looking from the flak to the shieldbelt room, I see what you mean. I got an extra turn in there I did not intend on and it it fixed now.

Stay tuned. Updated release tomorrow most likely.

Well that is good to hear that the redeemer is staying and so this is going to be more of a classic remake ... I really like what you have done so far and I thank you for getting some bot pathing in there so we could play the level before it hit beta stage.

I think you got that totally wrong, m8.
He didn't mean the downloadable Alpha, he meant his version that he's been working on since he made the Alpha available.

So calm down, the map has been resized and the next version will show it

Download temporarily removed. I agree the scale was too large.

I think you will find the size much better on the upcoming rendition.

So those of you who looked at what did you think on the fog? yea or nay?

    Hmmmm......dunno really yet.

But if you insist on a stupid Redeemer because of the spirit of the original as you said, then you should take the fog out again.

One other thing I noticed ... the ledge to get the redeemer is really frustrating to jump onto ... there seems to be a blocking volume around it because you can't double jump onto it from head on but if you take it at just the right side angle you can. I can't tell you how many times I missed that super easy jump because of that. Anyway maybe the scaling will take care of this but could you please check that before the next release. Thanks. I'm still really impressed with this version.
