MODEL Nali War Cow / Atomic Cow

Aware now that Bitter Pill is making his cow also, so hopefully between us we can work out a way to ensure no filename/character name conflicts.

Anyway, here's the progress so far, am not sure what to do about the feet, whether to go with hooves like the old cow , more more claw-like, somewhere between a birds claw and an elephants foot.

The profile is already looking a lot more detailed that the previous one I'd made for 2k4, and with half the polys, so taking into consideration all the crits of the previous one (especially the dodgy legs), this should turn out far superior. Depending on final polycount, and if I can find someone to buddy up with to animate it, I might do both UT2004 and UT3 versions, as the difference in polycounts should be negligible.

looking better than your last attempt.

the feet should have a bit longer toes to give the overall look more balance from the sides. head/face should have much more detail.. thighs should not curve "outwards" so much as they do now. The heel should not touch the ground as it does. Perhaps you should study some animals like rabbits to give you a better perspective on how "anthro" legs should look. here is a quick example:

I thought that's what I was asking with the first image!

Yeah- it's not really a furry... though it's called a cow (and makes cow noises), the original Nali cow in Unreal and subsequently Unreal Tournament was a reptilian creature, so I'm aiming for something similar to a stumpy, baby velociraptor/tyrannosaurus - so his behind/legs are quite rounded and muscular at the top, tapering to the ankle.

Still debating placement of the eye also- whether to have it further forward like the original cow, or closer to the ear with a longer snout, and also whether to model a mouth , to allow animating it opening when he moos.

    Looking great.

Small thing, but weren't the original WarCow a bit chubbier? Not that it'd matter much, you're doing a great job.

LOL, maybe once I've figure the cow out.

Still need to find an animation/coding ace to help cut him up and make it work in UT3.

Have plans for plenty of accessories/armour/backpacks etc.

I'm not sure where to go next for the main cow body- whether to go the whole hog and start modelling a whole shedload more detail into it, or save the polygons for the intricate stuff on the back-pack, and let the normal maps handle all the eye/mouth stuff?

Had a quick play mocking up colours and eye placement.

Q : Why ask Epic, when we can mutate the hell out of this game ?
A : Because we need their help for the low-level stuff like a way to change the voicepacks for characters ...

You should keep the smoochie lips ^^

Also the body: I don't know if it's because of the lightning but the body from concept 2,5 looks more ripped and thus looking better imho.

I like those last zbrush shots a lot (starting to look like a mouser), but I'm going to repeat what I said at beyondunreal, how much have you changed the lowpoly mesh? I just worry about it being detailed enough to really do that justice.

Looks nice, but doesn't look like the Nali warcow to me.

Are you using screenshots of the original at all for the base shape and developement?

The war cow should have a hooves, fatter body, further apart legs, and much fatter thighs. They weren't ripped body builders adapted for war.. they were cows.

The eyes were further forward on the face, and were smaller.

The whole point why they were endearing, is they were a little cute, but with big assed guns on thier back. Here's a reference image.

Move the eyes and the corners of the mouth further foreward. The ears are more "cow like" then the originals which were kinda pointed.

It really depends on if you want a community accepted update of the nali war cow, or if you want a new beast somewhat similar.

You have a great looking beastie, but it doen't scream "nali war cow" to me at all.

I'm a lightwave modeller, and also a zbrusher as well, if you need help.

    At least one exists. Read.

Previous post on the subject disappeared. Either someone objected to a pic of a muscly 7 month old (just linked now), or I only hit preview then closed the browser

They weren't ripped body builders adapted for war.. they were cows.
That pic looks cute for sure, but those "fat" thighs look pretty strong.

Somehow I never actually saw these things in game. Was it Unreal 1? That's the one Unreal game I never played

Looks really good, is that a 3d model of some form, as you some to have a variety of views done, and it would take quite some time to draw each view?
I'd say the face needs some more work though, and will this have any customisability support of ut3, such as having multiple thighs, heads, "backpacks", etc. to choose from?

Gareee: Its not finished yet, however a Nali Cow doesn't have to match the originally exactly, although I saw BitterPill's Nali Cows before I played the original (ut99) and saw its, I have to say I much prefer BitterPill's Nali Cows to the Epic ones which look quite ugly in-comparison.

I realize it's not finalized, which is why it's in the beta forums for feedback.

Part of the reason a lot of people have had issues with UT3, it diverting from the original character designs for the "heavy armored" look. Nothin wrong with it, bu tit's NOT an extension from what people already know and loved from the past games.

The same holds true with a remake of the nali war cow.. mare something significantly different from the original, and you risk alienating the players that the whole purpose of the creation is striving to please.

That's why all these reimagined movies are failing.. they are diverting so far from the original source material that people are more annoyed by them then pleased they are updated.

Note the American Godzilla's controversy... rather then build off the original, they chose to reinvent the wheel with him, and crashed hard.

Same with the Halloween, and the Fog remakes.. both diverted so far from the originals that fans were more offended or annoyed then pleased.

People who had never been fans in many cases liked the new iterations, however the very people that you'd think should have been targetted to please were just reminded how much liked the original instead.

Since characters can have add ons, there's nothing that says the add on feet couldn't have 3 toes, and that the head couldn't have a more "rabbit cow" look with an add on, but the base figure should remain somewhat faithful to the original.

or just do whatever creature you want, but don't try to call it the nali war cow, because it isn't if you don't recreate it, and choose to change it.

Either way, new content is a great thing, and I'm not trying to discourage it, but to get it to remain faithful to the source material.

Godzilla didn't suck because they gave the thing legs instead of rubber stumps, it sucked because there wasn't anything particularly appealing about the story or characters. Same for your other examples.

There were two or three cows for ut2004, none of them resembled the original and I'd say nearly 90% of the people who liked the cow in the first place liked them. It's not something you can worry about with the cow because he has so many built in haters to begin with. George Bush has nothing on the controversy of the cow, and that's part of why he is loved I think.
