Unhappy Graphics - detail and grunge are excessive - love and hate

    Hello,

I'm both impressed and confused by the graphics. It seems that Epic has overloaded the grunge/darkness and detail of the textures -- everything seems WAY overtextured and noisy, to the point of excessiveness. It's almost like they took every scene and applied the "grunge/dirt/shadow" overlay 10x.

    Has anyone else noticed this?

I get that there's a specific "look" in the game, but compared to anything in the current generation (HL2, Crysis, Bioshock, etc...), I feel like maybe this was done intentionally to keep the perception of detail high? Or is it just stylistic? I'm not expecting the style to match other games, but it's as though it's been overdone.

It's just very weird to see visually overloaded environments -- just massive amounts of contrast and detail in every scene -- contrasted with a very flat, blocky, "primary colors" HUD. And yet, with all the detail, it's not necessarily making scenes look more realistic -- just busier.

I'm impressed with the overall world environments, but does this bother anyone?

I don't notice it. I think it looks awesome. Those artists did an AWESOME job.

It has to do with the post processing settings. I set mine to Vivid, and it looks incredible, even at detail level 3.
The patch will save us all!

i like the way it looks, epic is the king of sci-fi art style...but there is one map that i noticed where you stand still and look at the floor where its raining...it looks like white noise more than water drops hitting the ground

Better than maps made out of plumbing, monitor screens, sawblades and fans, like in 2k4.

Yeah you're right.1000 shades or browns and greys is what bothers me.Everything is b&g with a little color accent here and there.I mean some look awesome,(i.e. sanctuary)but others have just been killed by the grunge. It's especially unappealing to have liitle contrast from floor to wall or ceiling.

Bioshock had tons of color and extremely clean environments. It would have been a breath of fresh air to have a map or two like that.
    Jumped ship.

i dont notice it either. i think the texture artists, level designers, static mesh creators, and every1 else there to make levels (oh yer, scripters too) deserve a big applause.

they have done an INCREDIBLE job.
