    Question Where do i begin?

    Hello everyone,

Well, I'm D_TOX. This will be my first time ever touching the Unreal Editor, or any game editor for that matter. That is why i have come here, seeking professional help!

I know there's a lot of people out there who are very good with this editor and i'm hoping those people, and even the not-so-good editors, would be willing to help out a complete newbie like me. Because right now, any kind of help will help!

So, i want to start learning the Unreal Editor, but where the hell do i begin? I see guides on how to carry out specific tasks in the editor, but no beginners guide. Do i need to pay for such things? Can anyone link me to a guide i missed, or a guide that is most newb friendly? What do you suggest? I guess thats my main query. Where should i start?

I look forward to your replies!

    D_TOX.

    1. It all starts with a pencil and some paper ( plan your map )
    2. Since this is your first time, start with something simple
    • Add Floor
    • Add Light
    • Add Walls
    • Add Skydome
    • Add SpawnPoint
    • Try it out!
    3. Just find Tutorials/Video/Guide about UnrealEngine³
    4. Once you know the basic start building your map. Start building Floors, Walls, Lighting your map while you progress through out your map.Use Materials on your wall ( i like to call it Textures) Don't add too much decals right away,
You can open an original map from the editor take a look at gridlock, depot, etc
that might give you an idea on how to make a map and how complex it might look like
    5. Once your map is done add decals, sounds, Static Mesh ( cars, sandbags, pillars, etc )
    6. It's all about time... how much time will you spend creating your map

Hope this gives you an idea so start building SOLDIER!

here 2 videos, Might help you understand how building map are about!

Call of Duty 4 HDvideo ( i know its not unrealenigne but you get an idea )

Start by checking out UNREAL mapping guides in a general sense, then search for 'hourences' UED3 tutorials, and there is also some good advice posted on here from an Epic mapper about gears specific maps.

Apart from that it's TIME and trial and error. I made my first map with UED back in 1998 almost ten years ago, and i'm still learning/relearning all the time. Bear in mind that you may also want to look at a 3D modeling app if you plan on making custom stuff rather than just placing supplied assets (though in gears the supplied stuff is probably prefered as it's more uniform and in keeping with the atmosphere).

if your not in any rush and want to avoid some headaches it might be worth waiting a week or 2 and picking up the SE edition of UT3 for PC when it hits teh shelves, its suppose to be packed with tutorials for ppl new to UEd, should be perfect for you

Hey guys, great help, I too am trying to learn to devolop a map, but I'm stomped on how to even start off with Unreal Engines. Where do i get the program? I searched the cd to the best of my abilities. I'm unable to find the editor. Any help would be appreciated. Do i have to buy it? Or Download it from anywhere?

1.Make a copy of your shortcut to launch Gears of War
2.Rename it to GoW Editor ( or what ever you wish it to be )
    3. right click this icon > properties
    4. in the shortcut tab > where you see the " Target: " add editor at the end so it looks like this

    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\Binaries\Startup.exe" editor

    5. Hit apply > OK

    And your good to go

Hey D_TOX, I started not to long ago in the same place you are now. I've looked at quite a few of the tutorials around and these were the best for me:

    http://www.veoh.com/series/HouseofUnreal

They start from the very beginning and teach everything you need to make a simple map. I highly recommend them. Videos 2 and 3 though are mostly about importing artwork from other program so if you're not into that you might want to jump over them and come back to them later.
