# Thread: Support for Games for Windows Live crashing problems

1. ## Support for Games for Windows Live crashing problems

Hi there, my name is Aaron, and I'm a Games for Windows Live developer at Microsoft. We have been tracking some of the crashing problems reported with G4W-L on these forums, and I wanted to give a quick update. Specifically, the issue I'm describing is:

After starting Gears of War, play proceeds for about 20-30 seconds before game crashes.

There are presently two known causes of this problem.

First, running from the DVD Autorun menu triggers this. The workaround is simply to run the game either from the Games Explorer (Start Menu->Games) or directly from the game folder in Program Files instead. We know where this is occurring, but are continuing to investigate why it is happening.

Second, some anti-malware programs have incompatibilities with G4W-L. For example, we have seen problems with older versions of Spyware Doctor, Karpensky and ZoneAlarm. Upgrading to the latest versions of this software generally solves these problems. We have found that merely turning off the software doesn't always help (and we would not advise de-activating your anti-malware anyhow), since the software is generally still doing something in the background.

If you are still having trouble beyond these two causes, or have found an incompatibility with anti-malware software I haven't mentioned here, please feel free to reply to this thread or message me directly. In the latter case, we have been working with these companies to make sure that the G4W-L problem is properly solved.

Thanks.

2. A couple more quick comments after scanning the latest posts on this forum.

Changing the cfg file essentially disables Live, as others have pointed out. It doesn't matter what you change, a single character will do it. Doing this will allow the game to play in single player mode, but lacking any Live functionality including the ability to gain achievements. If you choose this, please make sure to back up the cfg file so you can restore it easily.

This thread does not cover help for what some have termed "the stuttering problem". That is a separate issue that isn't covered by the known causes here.

Thanks.

3. ah it's good to hear that you guys know about this problem. hopefully we can all get this problem over with and we can finally start playing some Live.

4. Thank you Aaron for your reply.

I use 'Windows Defender', 'Spyware Blaster' and 'AVG'. (All upto date) Disabling these would put my PC at risk and I use it for work purposes.
Also as a games musician I use 'Nero' for making my music CD's/Demo's etc. My question is could any of the above programs also cause the 'wargame-g4wlive.exe' crash?

Cheers

5. My Computer

Dual Core AMD Athlon 64, 2400 MHz (12x200) 4600+
Windows Vista Ultimate 64
Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe
nVIDIA nForce 570 SLI, AMD Hammer
DirectX 10.0
2 Gig Kingston DDR2-677 (333MHz) Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT (256 MB)

I have recently Upgrade my motherboard BIOS to the most recent, I have downgraded my video drive from the most recent beta driver (169.04) to the most recent regular driver (163.75), I have installed the most recent DirectX10 SDK, I have installed Hot Fix "Windows6.0-KB940105-x64", I have tried a few other suggestion as well on this site. And I am still crashing at the splash screen. I get two (2) messages saying that "Gears Of War has stopped working, Windows can check online for a solution to the problem." It gives me the option to either check online or close the program. If I choose check online, it gives me a message that it is checking online and then close the program and nothing else. You can guess what happens if I choose the other option. I have included the "View Problem Details" from these error message as well as the log from the My Games folder. I see that you have addressed issues once you are in the game but what about people who do not get past the splash screen before a crash.

6. first of all thanks for posting here, any advice to the loss of savegames problem experienced both on off/online accouts ? http://forums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=583531
would be very appreciated

7. I get the 30 second crash, but don't use any of the programs in your post. (using AVG Free). So far, running a local profile and removing the game from windows firewall exceptions extends play to about five minutes. sometimes i can alt-tab out of the error message, but only once if at all before it crashes completely.
I've tried about every solution on the forum, except for editing the cfg file (why bother if i can't save progress). all drivers up-to-date, registry clean, etc. etc.

8. ## Still No Worky

I too have none of these programs, everything up to date (computer and all drivers are new as of 2 weeks ago). In fact the spyware I use is Windows OneCare, which is even more distressing because its clear that Microsoft programs are clearly not owrking well together.

Patch the Game!

Sorry to burst the bubble Aaron but the above methods still gave me the 'wargame-g4wlive.exe' crash error. Also disabling the line in the code didn't work either, the game still randomly crashes with 'wargame-g4wlive.exe'.

10. If this guy is legit, I gotta say that disabling the w4live thing does NOT help me, I still get the "wargameg4live.exe." crash. I'm going to try running the game from it's folder instead of the shortcut now...

11. well let me see

i've updated my Kaspersky to 7.0.0 whatever

and i try to run the game
so but i got the same bugs as before
i cant change Option Configurations
and i cant register a Windows Live Account
and the ESC Button wont work :>

Disabling does help, but for another crash than the ones you are experiencing.

In fact, it did help for me, and I uninstalled kaspersky, which was of a older version, before knowing that updating it could have fixed it.

Uninstalling it + using a firewall to block the game fixed the crash for me, but it's not the same as the one you are talking about. It was another kind of crash, but what he said worked for me (as stated in previous threads)

13. Running the game from any place other than the shortcut doesn't help me either. And after the "warameg4live.exe" crash I can't maximize the GOW window to resume. I try to maximize and it LOOKS like the window expands, (the only thing that expands are the blue borders) but to no avail. I'm running Norton internet security and absolutely resuse to disable it-- not with all the psychos on the net trying to hack your ****.

14. Laksamana ... your points are as useless as a lot of other points made on this forum. As a so called "representative" from Microsoft, I'd expect you to do your homework before seemingly shooting off some messages about starting the game from the DVD and anti-malware etc after only reading some forum messages for a few minutes.

Here's a clue to fixing the "G4W-L" problem ... if I run the game with Administrator privledges, I never crash.

Cheers!

15. Bomb, for some people the Admin feature is unavailable or it doesn't help everything but I've seen it work on other computers.

Lak, it's good to hear that the devs are doing something about this but it's too little too late for many players. I for one, had to solve my problem in a different way but like others have mentioned, some of us are not willing to turn off our security systems. Would you leave your house door unsecured? What would happen if we got something vandalized? Is Microsoft willing to pay for the damages? If so, then I will consider turning it off.

16. Running from the Program Files > Microsoft Games > Gears of War > Binaries > Startup

fixed the problem for me.

Thanks

17. Hi, I've been playing Gears of War without any crashes. HOWEVER, I have to mention that the game crashes whenever WindowBlinds is activated in the background.

heres a link to the software, and my log listed below:

18. Well I tried the Admin trick on my XP system and it seemed to work. I managed to complete the first act without a crash. The only problem was.... it didn't find my live account details and when I pressed the 'home' key it asked me to input the product key code again.

Has anyone re-entered the code and had Live working via the Admin trick or do we have to re-enter the code everytime we play with this method? Also, do you think it could mess our accounts up?

Cheers

19. none of the things he mentioned has worked for me. i still crash anywhere from 1 minute to 5 minutes into the game.

20. Hi folks, thanks for the replies. We'll be continuing to investigate as best we can. Please realize that the two known causes I mentioned might not cover all possible cases; it is simply two that we have been able to reliably reproduce ourselves and understand.

In the meantime, a few quick replies to the comments so far.

I'm not sure what the savegames problem is. Gears is responsible for its own savegames and is not reliant on any Live code.

Bombtrack, thanks for the constructive feedback. We have, in fact, been following the threads since release. The two issues we mentioned are, as I said, we have been able to reproduce reliably and so we know what the problems are. I apologize if you think I'm somehow "mouthing off" by trying to provide information on what we do know. Again, there are probably more than one or two issue that people are facing, and we can only track them down as fast as we can get data from fine folks as yourself.

CallofDoody416, as I said in my original post, we are recommending people upgrade their anti-malware applications, not turn them off. This is something we would never recommend people do. We have tested against as many applications as we can for compatibility purposes, but the way the PC market is, we can never test everything at once. As we get info, we will do our best to check it out.

We will look into the problems people have reported with WindowBlinds. This is not something presently covered in our compatibility testing.

Thanks.

21. I'm not sure what the savegames problem is. Gears is responsible for its own savegames and is not reliant on any Live code.

I have no reason to believe you actually work for Microsoft now.

The game's saves are completely reliant on Live. You have to log into a live account to even be able to save your progress, and the same Live issues that are causing the game to crash, are causing a great deal of us to lose our progress in the game. We've all gone through both Checkpoint folders (in the installation directory as well as My Documents), and neither seem to be able to get us back our saves. It ain't just campaign progress either, we're losing video/audio settings and control schemes, as well as having our MP models reverted back to the defaults.

Stop pretending to be a Microsoft employee.

22. JHarp, I stand corrected. I had forgotten that while GoW's internal savegame format does not use any Live code, they do indeed use Live account code for their saves. I'll ask someone else on our team to see if they are looking into this.

In the meantime, believe as you will. :-) I'm just trying to provide as much helpful info of what we know as I can.

Thanks.

same here, my computer is for gaming only, so i don't even have spyware or anything installed.

25. Hi,

I tried your solutions: I have updated Spybot search and destroy, my bitdefender antivirus (v10) is up to date, I launched the game with the startup.exe from the game's directory.

I am still having crashes when i launch a new campaign.

I will repost a new log file later if needed.

Hope to be able to play GoW before thiw week's Crysis launch...

26. Hi Aaron,

Thanks for your posts, its reassuring just to know something is going on from Microsofts pov.

I'm one who can fix the crashes by disabling live via the cfg - this enables me to play for as long as I like.

But without live I cannot access my profile which contains all my saves/options etc.

I tried turning off all the programs that might be interfering including anti-malware etc, but it didnt help. Something else is causing live to crash the game on my system, but I'm not sure what.

Interestingly, I even tried an older version (1.1) of live that was on the disc, but it had the same crashes.

Hope you can help us all out.

27. Thanks for you response.

First please spell the word Kaspersky in the right way

But i have posted a post on the kaspersky forum about this problem involving a Kaspersky product in the hope that someone there has some idea's:

http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=52441

28. I just saw Gears of War also installs two folders on my computer:

D:\Microsoft Games\Vince
D:\Microsoft\PCCompat

I presume they have something to do with Windows Live, right? I didn't install Gears of War in the Microsoft Games folder, so maybe those folders aren't in the correct places?

I try to install gears of war on vista and it gets to decompression and it tells me 'access denied' and closes down the installtion. How can I stop this??

30. I re-installed GOW but this time with the editor. I ran the game as normal but it still randomly crashed with the 'wargame-g4wlive.exe' error. I have since tried the 'Admin fix' trick and its not crashed yet.

[ Just run the game as Administrator. In Windows XP, find the shortcut you run the game with, click Properties, then under the Shortcut tab click the Advanced button. Check the "Run with different credentials" box. Now every time you start the game it will ask you who you want to run the game as. Click "The following user" and then select Administrator. Type in the password and voila! no more crashes. ] - quoted from another post!

Also Multiplayer is a lot smoother than the single player game, which stutters slightly.

Hope this helps

Thanks.
Thank you Aaron for your reply. Tell you boss that he's a real chap for releasing non-finished and obviously not properly tested product that we payed 50 dollars for!

32. I'm unable to get past the splash screen as I get the wargame-g4wl.exe crash, good job microsoft!

33. dude i see the game wants to download "launch.cab" data
but i allready got this data

so why does the game wants to download this data O_o

M\$ come and say something xD

34. Laksamana thanks for the tips, now I can play teh game, but have a problem with the mouse...anyway Thanks again!

35. Yeah im having the same problem ShadowLike And FYI Your taking your sweet ass time to fix the problem EPIC's. GG

36. For those of you experiencing connectivity issues with Windows Live, have you tried this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941206/en-us

This didn't fix the crashes for me, but I don't get any freezes when saving the game.

37. I would like to add my two cents.

I have tried every fix on this board, including the disabling of g4wlive in the cfg file and it still crashes on me. I am have no antimalware programs, I am simply running symantec AV. I have also tried running as administrator which gives the best results but still ends in crashing g4wlive.

I do not think it is in the slightest bit wise for Microsoft to have a member of their team admit that simple programs used to protect your computer disrupt their precious code. I particularly like the part about them still interfering even if they are off. Instead of giving excuses about other programs messing up your stuff (which seems to be the answer for any Microsoft related problem) just send out a new version of Live and everyone is happy.

38. For informations about my computer, you can find it here. I'm using avast! as my antivirus and I don't know if this one has been tested, just to let you know that at least one person that bought GOW for Windows and having problem with it uses avast! v4.7 family edition (Version : Sep2007 4.7.1074).

I just come home and i have FIXED MY CRASHING problem !!!

I did two things. One of thouse solved it.

1) I started the UPNP service (that is used by games for windows live). This service was disabled (did it myself because i don't like UPNP). Thanks for the link HIOB!! --> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941206/en-us

2) I have putted Kaspersky in compatibility mode (thanks for the tip Laksamana). For all Kaspersky users try this one i think that did the trick. Look here how to do this:

http://www.kaspersky.com/support/kis...&qid=208279439

Maybe Laksamana and his development team can contact Kaspersky so that they can solve this problem. I don't like that i have to put Kaspersky in compatibility mode. In compatibility mode the protection of confidential data and anti-dailer is disabled.

First of all, I wanted to thank you for your help in resolving this insidiously annoying issue. I have tried to launch from the start menu, from the binaries folder in my Program Files directory, though I have not attempted to alter the code in any way, I have reinstalled the software several times. Each reinstall I try something different. I leave some of the installation options unchecked just to see what happens. However, I always get the same result.

I'm running a:
Dell Dimension 4550
Window XP Home SP2
1Gig RAM
P4 3.06 HyperThreading Enabled
BFG GeForce 7800GS OC AGP
BFG 800 Watt PSU
Creative SB Live! Series Sound Card (I think)
I manually installed the Windows Live update

I installed the game all went fine w/ the install or so I thought anyway. When I went to start the game it would start to load, I'd get the splash screen, then screen would stay fully black, then the game would crash back to Windows and I'd get the following error message:

wargame-g4wlive.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I clicked on the link to see what info would be on the error message being sent back to windows and it said this:

Error signanture:

AppName: wargame-g4wlive.exe AppVer: 1.0.3329.131 ModName: kernel32.dll

ModVer: 5.1.2600.3119 Offset: 00012a5b

And get this, I have MemTurbo RAM monitoring software; it tells me how much free RAM I have and when the error message is going out, my RAM drops to 1meg. After the message is over my RAM shoots back up to about circa 780megs. I don't get it. Thanks again for your help.
