Default Support for Games for Windows Live crashing problems

Hi there, my name is Aaron, and I'm a Games for Windows Live developer at Microsoft. We have been tracking some of the crashing problems reported with G4W-L on these forums, and I wanted to give a quick update. Specifically, the issue I'm describing is:

After starting Gears of War, play proceeds for about 20-30 seconds before game crashes.

There are presently two known causes of this problem.

First, running from the DVD Autorun menu triggers this. The workaround is simply to run the game either from the Games Explorer (Start Menu->Games) or directly from the game folder in Program Files instead. We know where this is occurring, but are continuing to investigate why it is happening.

Second, some anti-malware programs have incompatibilities with G4W-L. For example, we have seen problems with older versions of Spyware Doctor, Karpensky and ZoneAlarm. Upgrading to the latest versions of this software generally solves these problems. We have found that merely turning off the software doesn't always help (and we would not advise de-activating your anti-malware anyhow), since the software is generally still doing something in the background.

If you are still having trouble beyond these two causes, or have found an incompatibility with anti-malware software I haven't mentioned here, please feel free to reply to this thread or message me directly. In the latter case, we have been working with these companies to make sure that the G4W-L problem is properly solved.

    Thanks.

A couple more quick comments after scanning the latest posts on this forum.

Changing the cfg file essentially disables Live, as others have pointed out. It doesn't matter what you change, a single character will do it. Doing this will allow the game to play in single player mode, but lacking any Live functionality including the ability to gain achievements. If you choose this, please make sure to back up the cfg file so you can restore it easily.

This thread does not cover help for what some have termed "the stuttering problem". That is a separate issue that isn't covered by the known causes here.

    Thanks.

I get the 30 second crash, but don't use any of the programs in your post. (using AVG Free). So far, running a local profile and removing the game from windows firewall exceptions extends play to about five minutes. sometimes i can alt-tab out of the error message, but only once if at all before it crashes completely.
I've tried about every solution on the forum, except for editing the cfg file (why bother if i can't save progress). all drivers up-to-date, registry clean, etc. etc.

Thank you Aaron for your reply.

I use 'Windows Defender', 'Spyware Blaster' and 'AVG'. (All upto date) Disabling these would put my PC at risk and I use it for work purposes.
Also as a games musician I use 'Nero' for making my music CD's/Demo's etc. My question is could any of the above programs also cause the 'wargame-g4wlive.exe' crash?

    Cheers

    My Computer

    Dual Core AMD Athlon 64, 2400 MHz (12x200) 4600+
    Windows Vista Ultimate 64
    Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe
nVIDIA nForce 570 SLI, AMD Hammer
    DirectX 10.0
    2 Gig Kingston DDR2-677 (333MHz) Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT (256 MB)

I have recently Upgrade my motherboard BIOS to the most recent, I have downgraded my video drive from the most recent beta driver (169.04) to the most recent regular driver (163.75), I have installed the most recent DirectX10 SDK, I have installed Hot Fix "Windows6.0-KB940105-x64", I have tried a few other suggestion as well on this site. And I am still crashing at the splash screen. I get two (2) messages saying that "Gears Of War has stopped working, Windows can check online for a solution to the problem." It gives me the option to either check online or close the program. If I choose check online, it gives me a message that it is checking online and then close the program and nothing else. You can guess what happens if I choose the other option. I have included the "View Problem Details" from these error message as well as the log from the My Games folder. I see that you have addressed issues once you are in the game but what about people who do not get past the splash screen before a crash.

    Default Still No Worky

I too have none of these programs, everything up to date (computer and all drivers are new as of 2 weeks ago). In fact the spyware I use is Windows OneCare, which is even more distressing because its clear that Microsoft programs are clearly not owrking well together.

    Patch the Game!

Sorry to burst the bubble Aaron but the above methods still gave me the 'wargame-g4wlive.exe' crash error. Also disabling the line in the code didn't work either, the game still randomly crashes with 'wargame-g4wlive.exe'.

If this guy is legit, I gotta say that disabling the w4live thing does NOT help me, I still get the "wargameg4live.exe." crash. I'm going to try running the game from it's folder instead of the shortcut now...

Disabling does help, but for another crash than the ones you are experiencing.

In fact, it did help for me, and I uninstalled kaspersky, which was of a older version, before knowing that updating it could have fixed it.

Uninstalling it + using a firewall to block the game fixed the crash for me, but it's not the same as the one you are talking about. It was another kind of crash, but what he said worked for me (as stated in previous threads)

Running the game from any place other than the shortcut doesn't help me either. And after the "warameg4live.exe" crash I can't maximize the GOW window to resume. I try to maximize and it LOOKS like the window expands, (the only thing that expands are the blue borders) but to no avail. I'm running Norton internet security and absolutely resuse to disable it-- not with all the psychos on the net trying to hack your ****.

hi my game only ever crashes at around the start of the rain level (after leaving the junker) then restarting and trying to reload the game and crashes again. so basically i start again and crashes at the same point.

i got rid of the stutter buy using a different sound card other than the mobo one.

    Default Yet another Crash: HELP!!!

Gears of War runs fine at the start up, i go to make an account, and about half way through entering the key, it says windows has encountered a problem and so gears of war has to shut down. I've tried running it as administrator and through program files but it still doesn't work.

    Hi PwnanOBrien,
thanks for your advice regarding the downloading of the newer Live version file (XLiveRedist01.02.0241.00.msi). I didn't reinstall GoW, I just installed the new Live version and since then I didn't experience the crash anymore.

This is just that simple to solve? And EPIC and MS are totally inept to provide such a solution at all? And we - their paying customers - are getting nuts in finding any solution to the crashs in hours and hours of searching the forum?!?

    EPIC: This is really ridiculous!

Hey PwnanOBrien - may be you should get a job with EPIC to help them out in Q&A. Something they obviously just can't handle themselves.

Really incredible. What a mess. Thanks again PwnanOBrien: I know now finally after a month of wasted search how GoW plays and looks.

Default Gears of War PC-Directx 10 Error in some textures appear red or blue

    Forgive my insistence.
This problem occurs only activating how directx 10 and the AA enabled or disabled.
In the event 3, the Titan furious, there are problems with the textures at the end of the mission.
They appear close to where you fall to the beast.
It can happen any other mission.
It can happen because it is not the texture?
In directx 9 is all very well, but I would like to see it properly with directx 10.
    Please, can solve this problem?
    For any questions, ivanmargo@hotmail.com.

if there is no answer to my question this GAME FAILS and everyone shall know

I try to install gears of war on vista and it gets to decompression and it tells me 'access denied' and closes down the installtion. How can I stop this??

I would like to add my two cents.

I have tried every fix on this board, including the disabling of g4wlive in the cfg file and it still crashes on me. I am have no antimalware programs, I am simply running symantec AV. I have also tried running as administrator which gives the best results but still ends in crashing g4wlive.

I do not think it is in the slightest bit wise for Microsoft to have a member of their team admit that simple programs used to protect your computer disrupt their precious code. I particularly like the part about them still interfering even if they are off. Instead of giving excuses about other programs messing up your stuff (which seems to be the answer for any Microsoft related problem) just send out a new version of Live and everyone is happy.

For informations about my computer, you can find it here. I'm using avast! as my antivirus and I don't know if this one has been tested, just to let you know that at least one person that bought GOW for Windows and having problem with it uses avast! v4.7 family edition (Version : Sep2007 4.7.1074).

Ok I seem to be having this problem, but some odd issues. i also run no anti spyware virus or anything of the sort. And my nvidia drivers are up to date.

For one the game file is only 9 gigs in the Program File folder. Thought its supposed to be bigger.

Two, the installation just disappears after it does the decompression. No box or anything afterwards. On top of that, there is nothing in my Start Menu about Gears, No folder or anything, and I checked all the folders.

    My system:
    Vista Home Premium
    2.8 P4
    2 Gigs of Ram

I took from the day November 8 hoping to fix the problem of instability to play so a player.
In multiplayer mode do not have any problem, but with the way history, it is impossible for me to play.

Do if Epic, microsoft or have some sort of information to reassure customers or tell whether they will get a patch?

I think this is very bad and should begin to provide useful information and to inform us that we have these problems of not being able to play or 5 min followed.

    Smile Works for me.

Just wanted to let you folks know that not everyone is experiencing problems. Which is logical if you think about it. Even after viewing many threads in this and another another forum, I decided to make the plunge. Luckily I haven't been disappointed. Only one problem though. I can't log into windows live. Tried configuring my wireless router. Made changes in WIN XP according to Microsofts instructions which I got from their website. Still no go. I hope to get help somewhere as multiplayer is one of the games strongpoints. And no, you don't have to be logged into Win Live to save games.

I also have not had very many problems, except loosing save games. I have had to start all over 3 times (and that does aggrivate me beyond belief). I have had a few crashes from just popping in the disc, but most of the time not a problem. I just hope they fix the save game issue ASAP. PLEASE if nyone can help with this I would have you kids for you LOL.

    Default Installation Issues

I have read that the installation generally takes a long time but I am having a problem where after the installation finishes the decompression phase the screen disappears and then I am left with the gears of war tab on my start bar and I can hear the cd spinning up and down and the hard drive is still blinking fast enough to appear solid. Eventually I get the Gears of War install screen back saying the the installation has been interrupted and no changes have been made. Does anyone have a clue as to what's causing this?
    My System:
    Q6600
    3GB Ram
    Vista Ultimate 32-bit
    8800gtx with latest drivers
I have 2 raptor HD's 74 and 34 JBOD where Windows is installed and I am trying to put this game on a 250GB SATAII drive that only contains one other game(Crysis, which installed fine).

I have tried installing the game at least four times with the same result. When it does this the installer keeps any other programs from launching, even task manager. I have my Norton Internet Security disabled and UAC in windows turned off.

Default Problem with Modified executable code

I'm having trouble with getting Gears of War to launch on my pc, if possible please diagnose whats going on with my system

    OS-Windows XP Home 32bit(using service pack 2)
    CPU-Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4ghz
    GPU-ATI Radeon X1900XTX 512mb(using the 7.10 driver display package)
    RAM-Corsair 2gigs XMS DDR2 SDRAM 800mhz Dual Channel
    OTHER-BFG 128mb AGEIA Physics processor
(as you can see I don't think hardware's a problem)

Anyways I install Gears of War and everything appears to be fine, but when I go to launch the game an error message pops up saying E:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\Binaries\wargame-g4wlive.exe: You cannot run the game with modified executable code. Please reinstall the game. I've tried installing the game several times now and the same thing happens every time. I've heard about the 64bithotfix but I'm not running on a 64bit partition so I don't see how it would help me. Well I'm all out of ideas so I hope you can help me.

im getting the exact same message. i managed to get to act 4 where you fight the beserker but logged out to go do some stuff and install messanger, after that the gave gives me the error, i had no problems up untill this point and the only thing i did was put messanger on, considering this game takes an hour or so to install just for it to crash so quick is just a waste of my time and money and if they dont release a patch soon ill be taking it back for a refund.

    Default What The Hell

£34 .00 for a game that wont work, crashes after 30 seconds, at first i think its an issue with me till i browse the net and find so many people with the same issue...why? I run a 4 gb ram, 88oogtx card, quad q6600 cpu, i shouldnt get issues.

Get a patch to sort this or admin to post a viable soloution.

Quick enough to take the money, shame the sense of urgency doesnt apply to dealing with problems.

I had the same problem when I started playing GoW in Vista (32Bit). The game installs, runs for 30 seconds and crashes. Apparently, this is a known issue, because the M$ service desk was able to tell me that running the game as administrator would solve the problem. And guess what: they were right (which doesn't happen that often). Tis is kind of hard to do from the games explorer, so here's what I've done: create a shortcut on the desktop to the startup.exe file located in the Binaries folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\Binaries). When I start the game I right-click the shortcut and select Run as Administrator. This has worked fine so far.
As an alternative you can also right-click the startup.exe, but the browsing takes too much time in my opinion.

Laksamana ... your points are as useless as a lot of other points made on this forum. As a so called "representative" from Microsoft, I'd expect you to do your homework before seemingly shooting off some messages about starting the game from the DVD and anti-malware etc after only reading some forum messages for a few minutes.

Here's a clue to fixing the "G4W-L" problem ... if I run the game with Administrator privledges, I never crash.

    Cheers!

Bomb, for some people the Admin feature is unavailable or it doesn't help everything but I've seen it work on other computers.

Lak, it's good to hear that the devs are doing something about this but it's too little too late for many players. I for one, had to solve my problem in a different way but like others have mentioned, some of us are not willing to turn off our security systems. Would you leave your house door unsecured? What would happen if we got something vandalized? Is Microsoft willing to pay for the damages? If so, then I will consider turning it off.
