What about this, taken from the front page of the GOW News page
Unmatched online gaming. Gears of War includes a free and unlimited Silver Membership to the Games for Windows LIVE service that includes online play, personalized profiles, a unified Friends List, in-game voice chat, and the ability to unlock single-player LIVE Achievements. Players can upgrade to a Gold Membership to enjoy all of the Silver features above, plus: TrueSkill matchmaking, the ability to unlock multiplayer achievements, and full access to the benefits of the Xbox LIVE Gold membership.
That sounds like if you sign up for a gold LIVE account PC peeps can play XBOX360 peeps, yeah?
GOW = Game Of Waiting
Listy, I'm in the same boat as you. I bought this game with the expectation I could play against 360 users. If we can't do that then multiplay with this game is useless as there are no dedicated servers for GOW. What a disappointment this game is.
1. No support
2. No dedicated servers for multiplayer
3. No ability to play XBOX360 people (which i thought would be the idea of LIVE)
So what have we paid £30 for? A pretty GOW themed coaster, toilet reading material, that could also double as a coaster, and soak spills, when i spit out my tea becasue the game didn't crash, and a nice GOW themmed DVD/CD holder.
Oh wait, hang on, you almost had me there M$ You want us to pay another £35 for a GOLD account, then because we can't play XBOX people you want us to shell out another £200 for an XBOX360, then you want us to buy another copy of GOW @ £30
So that's £295... CHA-CHING $$$$
Nearly £300 just to play GOW against people on 360's, when iv'e got a perfectly good PC, that i've already paid you for Windows... that can play... almost play... GOW? I don't think so Billy G
Tell you what i'll do, i'll take my game back to the shop, then i won't get a GOLD account, i won't buy a 360, and i won't buy your games again, how's that?
GOW = Game Of Waiting
Taken from Consoleupdates.com
"In an interview with Epic Games’ designer Cliffy B, he explains why the recently-released PC version of Gears of War didn’t support cross-platform play with the Xbox 360. He also goes on to explain what’s different in the PC version."
GOW = Game Of Waiting
I can't recover my Xbox Live Gold profile into my Gears of War for Windows, and thus I have been unable to play multi-player since the game came out!
I have tried all things I can think of, updated both Gears and GFW using their own external patches, updated all my drivers, tried telling GfW-Live which port to use in the registry -- nothing works.
It will say that I have no internet connection, even when I do. I can connect and play just fine with my Xbox 360, passing all connection tests with flying colours. And Unreal Tournament 3 for PC connects to multiplayer just fine. So I'm confused on that one. Also, it will say "incorrect password" if I type something wrong on purpose as my Live password. How can Gears-PC/GfW-Live know the password is wrong if it can't see the internet connection?
I know lots of people have probably mentioned this problem already, but I just needed to vent my complaining a little.

When I'm trying to install the lastest update to the game I have an error witch says:
Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match. <WHAT TO DO?!>
im having Mic problems, i can send voice messages but its so hard for them to hear and in private chat they cant hear me what so ever
'my every weakness i must turn into strength'
^^^^ ive given up with my mic how do u open the console to text chat in multiplayer? and does it work on MP campaign?
'my every weakness i must turn into strength'
The console key is '
Thats the key 2 keys left of Enter middle row on UK keyboards (also @), I believe its the key above TAB on US keyboards.
Once the console opens type "say" minus the quotes then space and type whatever you want to actually say....dosn't work during game progress mic conversations and custscenes.
YOu make a great game (best ever 4 me) to xbox360 and the version for PC is a bunch of bugs and crashS!!!!
WTF are you doing epic guys? you want money but at least make games that work well...i want this game sooo much but i'm not buying it until the game is fixed of all problems and if you make that quickly i make a e-mail and i send to your BOSS!!!!
plz get something to make this game works! very ppl are soo ****ed up about the crashs and ppl are afraid to buy it and thats nooo good for you guys
I was having a problem with creating a profile. After reading the posts here, I was able to fix that issue by getting the latest version of Windows Live.
I now have a profile and I am able to alter and save settings.
I run the game in SP just fine. My problem is when attempting to update Live or playing multiplayer. I have downloaded the Patch from MS-LIVE.
The problem is that when Windows Live tries to run an update automatically,
it exits that game, launches a CMD line box. Then my ASUS Bios screen launches like it is trying to update my BIOS.
I do not want to do that ! When I hit cancel, that whole process stops and nothing seems to get done.
I have registered and set up a profile on 'Live' earlier, but it doesn't seem to find it. I got the free GOLD for 1 month offer. I have a profile for XBOX now. I don't even have an XBOX! Would my profile be the same for XBOX and Windows Live ? Confused about the difference.
Any clues ?
Let me know if I need I need to provide any more info. This game has great potential if I can play it !
If I'm understanding your problem correctly it sounds like LIVE still thinks you need to update.
I haven't personally seen this, but there's another thread that talks about this issue (with a couple workarounds).
Basically it sounds like the BIOS update service for certain ASUS motherboards is thinking that the patches are BIOS updates when they in fact aren't.
My guess is that the bios updater software is looking for a particular filename or other identifier to determine which updates are bios updates. In this case it seems like there's a name (or other) collision that confuses it. My guess is that you could stop whatever service handles the ASUS bios updates and then patch successfully if you don't want to uninstall the bios updater software as the thread below suggests.
Anyway, here's that thread.
This assumes that the problem you're hitting matches the one described in that thread. It might be worth manually downloading and applying the updates (rather than doing it from within the game) as it will give you a bit more control (and allow you to unpack the packages as discussed in the thread above if you choose to.)
With regard to your second set of questions regarding the profile...
There is only one profile. It works on both Xbox LIVE and Games for Windows - LIVE. If you have a profile for either you have it for both. You likely can't sign in with it because the service first makes sure that you're running the latest version of the Games for Windows - LIVE binaries before it lets you successfully sign in to LIVE (that's why you're being offered the system update). By taking care of the first problem you'll probably solve this one too.
Hope that helps.
Games for Windows - LIVE
Thank you Glartwort!
That work well after you re-directed me. And you were right about that Live/XBOX ID thing. It is the same. Duh.
There were just so many threads with so many different problems that I just didn't know where to post.
Problem solved and I am able to play online.
Thanks again !
I loaded GOW PC, ran the title update, and did the reg edit for saved files. Still, I could get no further than the initial scene of locusts on the cell top without just crashing. I disabled my CA AntiSpyware and firewall and that seems to have fixed the problem. I'm running Vista Home Prem on a new Dell XPS 420 Core2Quad 2.4 GHz, 3GB RAM and an 8800GT video card. This looks good now, I guess I better read the F$#%% manual and figure out how to kill stuff...
So wait, the game couldn't even have a type T or Y to talk?
You have to go to your console, type say, then type whatever you want to say???
And why would we want to talk on Gears of War PC?
Nobody even plays the deserted game anyway.
Theres only like 3 or 4 servers in the day, and like 1 or 2 at night.
DO A BARREL ROLL!
Some textures with the way Directx 10 activated are blue or red.
Specifically for example in the event 3 at the end of the mission titan furious.
Is there any solution please?

this crash at downpour. please help
I have experienced this quite a few times. I've *maintained* a less than 80 ping to the host but still lagged severely, and also maintained a 120 ping to a host and not lagged at all. Considering I get a solid 62FPS all the time, it could not be my machine buckling to high performance demands.
Is there going to be host in Gears of War II?
If you mean host advantage on the other hand, there going to fix it as much as possible so that it will be either gone or barely noticeable. You gotta remember that no matter how optimized there net code is, if the host has a crappy connection then there will be bullet lag and the host will have an advantage.

Just bought GoW.
Checked some of the problem posts and didn't see one like mine. The game loaded up fine, I get into the single player mode and the opening video works great but as soon as the gear is supposed to follow the other guy the environment spins around and the audio has a spinning sound in it too. This is very strange. At 1st i thought this was the game then quickly realized something was wrong. I have newest Windows Live upgrade. Machine Specs:

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago. It was caused by a USB game controller being connected while I was using mouse/kb. Unplugged the controller and teh problem went away.

It says to me when i try ad enter matchmaking that i have a poor network experince, because my firewall settings are to strict, ive tried turning down the firewall sercurity but that hasn't worked either, any advice?
For some reason, gearsofwar.com isnt, posting my multiplayer online stats. Everything shows up 0. Anyone else ever have this problem?
what fixes, this is lies don't knowingly lie when you release a patch that makes the game worse
i can't create a new profile f1 doesnt work, and every time i try to change my controllers settings the whole control jams and the mouse takes over, keyboard control stops,as well as pads, what do i do?
Okay, I have a problem where I was in a game with a person (I don't know which person) who was tampering with the game to try and get himself to the top of a leaderboard. Once the match ended, I was sent all the way back to level (rank) 1 accompanied by -2trillion experience points. I have no way of making it back even to exp points 0 and starting over from level one. Anyone know of any way to fix this? Or have any way to contact Epic? Because I have contacted Microsoft customer support and they said they do not have the tools to help me, only Epic can because it has something to do with their Game Servers. I cannot find any way to contact Epic directly either, so basically I am stuck. Any suggestion will help so please, reply to this post or (preferably) email me at: firstname.lastname@example.org
i dont know weather im posting this in the right place by is anyone having a problem when you down someone and have full health take them as a meatshield but they take you as a meatshield at the sametime?????????????
