The Sons Of Sera
Death, destruction and a fight to survive, these were facts of life for the stranded. And today was no different then any other since Emergence Day, but Charles had been wishing that it was. He had lost everything, except his life in one swift moment, and now he lay among with rubble of his once glorious past or at least to him. He had never been wealthy but in his own eyes he was; a family, a job, a home, and week from his wedding. He could not have asked for a better life. Then the invasion happened and his livelihood was stolen away and turned him into what he was now a, stone cold killer. Though he hated remembering his past, and it always seemed to return to him at the worst times. Times when he needed his composure, strength, and it wasn’t ever a good memory, it was always the same vibrant and yet horrible nightmare that would haunt him until his eyes closed for the last time.
Tranquility and excitement filled the Gilbert home, the engagement party for their son and future daughter in-law was going as planned. Decorations, balloons, food galore, friends, and family from all across the nation. Charles’ parents stood on the 2nd story balcony observing what all their hard work had accomplished.
“Don’t they look happy, I mean I can’t remember when I saw so much joy on Charlie’s face,” said his mother with a smile, “I only hope that their love will last.”
Norbert his father was quick to reply, “You mean like mine and yours? Or my divorced parents?” he smiled wickedly, “Come on Mary, what possibly could go wrong?”
Down in the garden Charles scanned the faces of the guests while looking for Jessica, but he was unable to find her. He caught a glimpse of his parents staring down upon the participants and decided to start up a little fun.
“Hey, are you two, too old to enjoy yourselves, or do you have “others” way to enjoy each other?” he yelled skywards, so everyone including his parents heard.
Charles could see that his comments had flustered them and that they were trying to reply, while still being civil. But he knew that this was going to turn ugly, and it was coming fast.
Norbert stared down his son with a look that could have pierced stone, and simply stated, “You’ll be lucky to get to your wedding if you keep that up,” trying not laugh he added, “I brought you into this world and I sure as f*cking hell, I will take you out!…”
Before Charles could reply, Jessica stepped in and intervened on the companies behalf, she knew where this argument would go and she want to stop it before it got there. Jessica had seen how violent these joking feuds had gotten, and she didn’t want anymore harm to come upon Charles.
“You both know that if it comes down to that, I will have to restrain both of you again and I don’t think either of you want to happen?”
Being a Gear Enforcer had its perks, and both Charles and Norbert remembered how quickly they had been disabled the last time their arguments took a turn for the worse. Both men began to rub certain muscles where phantom pain began to course through as a reminder of what did and possibly was about to reoccur. Both men fell silent and look carefully upon Jessica as she began to speak
“Now that is better, I so glad tha…”
There was a tremor, Sera had had stable tectonics for the past 300 years, even through all the battles from the Pendulum Wars there had never been a recorded tremor or earth quake. A sense of perplexity began to set in among the guest, but they thought nothing of it at first.
“That was weird, I wonder what that was.” Stated one guest.
“I believe that was earthquake?” said another with stout hesitation
“No, no an earth quake would have been bigger and you wouldn’t be standing here talking about it neither.” Commented on of the older quest. Many other speculations began to break out among the guests and the Gilbert family. When a guest proposed that there militants beginning to start their attack on the C.O.G. Regime Jessica had to step in.
“Come on now, don’t be ridiculous. The wars are long over and any resistance, if any, would be destroyed as soon as they opened fire upo…”
Once again the was a tremor but this time is wasn’t dissipating, in fact it was growing with strength. A panic began to set in among the guests and family members, people began to run for cover on the inside of the home.
For the first time in his fifteen years of knowing Jessica, he saw something he had never seen before, fear. He didn’t know what it was but it was as if she knew what was happening.
“Jessica! Jessica! Why are you still standing, come and get into cover!” But his pleas fell upon deaf ear. “Jessica, what is the matter with you can’t you see that this is dangerous?!”
He ran to her with all haste, trying to get to her before something happened. When he reached her, he saw that her complexion had changed from a light shade of pink to as white as a ghost, and shaking worse the quake itself. He didn’t care about what scared her, he was more worried about her safety at the moment. Then Jessica began to mumble,
“I can’t, it can’t be, they can’t be here. We heard them but we didn’t listen, they were right!? No, this can’t be happening! They are here and oh my God!”
“Jessica, what are you talking about? What? Who? Jessica answer me, for the love of God!" Charles was frantically trying everything in his power to bring her back to reality and get her to safety. Finally she began to snap out of it, as Charles began to pull her toward the house.
She stop twenty feet from the door and yelled to Charles, "Charles, We need to get away from here, Now!" she started to pulled Charles away from the house.
"Jess, what do you mean away from here, here is safe! If we leave, there no telling what will happen to us or "our" family."
"We won't have a family or a life for that matter if we stay here any longer! Now let's go!" She began to guide him away, but Charles stopped and took one last look at his home only to see the horror as the earth beneath his home exploded skyward. Stunned he began to run back to the ruins of his home only to be man handle by his fiancée and lead down the streets and alleys towards old industrial district. He didn't know why but he could see that Jessica was determined to get there as soon as possible.
Charles was tired, emotionally torn, and confused more now then he had been in his entire lifetime, he wanted to ask questions but he figured the answers were coming but he knew not soon enough.
As they ran he could hear more explosions and what sounded like heavy gun fire not far behind them. He was scared, he didn't know what was after them but he knew that what ever it was gaining ground. Panic was beginning to set in, he was worried about his family and wondering if anyone had survived. He promised himself that after all this was over he would go back look for survivors.
As the factories began to come into range, he could see the black smoke stacks, rusty imulsion drills and processing plants. There were abandoned satellite casings everywhere. "This must be where they began building the imulsion satellites after the Pendulum wars," he thought to himself in shear amazement of the quantity and quality of the designs.
Charles trusted Jessica and kept following her blindly through abandoned factories and dislodged mining equipment, he didn't understand what was driving her but it had kept him alive and for that he was grateful. Her pace began to slow as they came to their unknown destination, or at least to him. He could see that they were standing before an imulsion processing plant, and as they began to enter, explosions began to shake the district and he caught a glimpse of what had been chasing them.
A horde, of lizard like creatures, with gigantic spiders, and sadistic looking dinosaurs. Jessica began to run again as the smoke stacks began to explode and crash towards the ground.
"I knew it! We should have listened. God, maybe we can still make it in time." She said to herself while dodging falling bricks and large pieces of steel. "Charles we are almost there, don't stop running!"
He had no intention to, in fact he began to push himself harder then he had before their lives were at stake and what ever was going to be in front of them had to be better than the horde following behind.
