    Default Locking vehichles

One of the most annoying things in UT2004 is when a teammate steals your ride.

As an early feature request to stop people getting on each other's nerves would be for a single seated vehichle to be locked on exit for all bar you for either 15s or until you die or you enter another vehichle - whichever's sooner. Enough to let you build a node and fly off.

that would be a bad idea. you assume that everyone who takes a vehicle actually knows what they are doing. what about those retarded pubbers that take a manta to a node only to do nothing and then litterally walk off. means if you get there at the same time or after them by riding a manta or having to walk or drive a scorpion you are screwed. you are essentially down a vehicle already.

Unlocked vehicles aren't the real problem. The real problem is a combination of 1) people perceiving vehicles as "theirs" instead of "their team's" and 2) people not knowing when to get into a vehicle. In most cases, 1 and 2 are the same person.

Suppose there's three of you in the 'Bender, and you're responsible for building the primary node and the closest tank node in Torlan. Suppose you drive everyone there and then link the node. When you're halfway, why would those other two stick around and wait for you to finish? They'd better hop back in the 'Bender and head for the tank node. With good timing, they'll arrive just as you activate the link.

    Terrible idea.

I can see how you thought of it - but as has been said, the vehicles are Team owned. Locking out the good player from correctly using the vehicle just vacated by "Player" while they wander into the bushes after a butterfly is just as problematic as "Player" zooming off for a tour of the map as the decent player starts a node.

If you exit a vehicle to build a node somebody else should be using it to do something destructive while you do something constructive. When the node builds, chances are there will be a vehicle spawning right there anyway.

Indeed...however, since there's generally nothing destructive within 5'000 unreal units, it's more likely they'll be doing something transportive.
The game looks and plays great, Epic!

It certainly is less of a problem in maps where there are plenty of transport options.

But imagine the start of Torlan. You get in the manta first, (because all of us here just would I can safely assume) hop out then let everybody else get on the wing. Then you can drive it to where it needs going to, not be flown off on the wing to a far flung corner, which can be enough to loose you the game if there are 2 good players on the wing.

For benders- as I said - only single seaters, and as for butterfly chasers, erm, drop the lock to 10s.

I know it's a team resource, but infighting within a team about who does what destroys team spirit, and a team spiritit, to me is what all this game is about.

At the very least, don't allow vehichles to be taken when you are in the process of healing it! Because that is seriously annoying.

Someone else also starts healing the vehicle and drives away with it. It's probably better to never trust someone who's in the neighbourhood of the vehicle you're healing.

Wahey- at least somebody else agrees that vehichle stealing gets on their goat.

It's probably better to always trust people around you, and enlighten them if you think they make a mistake.

Players learn from the examples set by other players. If you protect your vehicle, you teach others that vehicles are not team resources. If they then will not treat them as team resources either, you have yourself to blame.

Hmm, so it's team resources vs whoever gets in first.

I fear in pubs and with new players, it'll take a long long time for some players to learn courtesy. So the blunt instrument of forcing them to be curteous would be better for me. It would probably best be done the wame way as exiting a vehichle in ONS Plus - double tap L + exit = leave to the left , double tap R and exit, leave to Right of vehichle. Double tap back and exit - exit with 10s team hijack protection.

Ah well - I concede defeat
(for now - just you wait untill the tens of thousands start playing, or somebody nabs the other teams base cicada and takes it into a suicidal charge, that you've been keeping your own for the last 10mins)

If you ever spectate a race map you'll find loads of people going "OMG GET OUT OF MY CAR!!11" when they are nowhere near it, people stealing other people's cars only to drive off the edge straight away, or (this isn't really to do with the other two or the topic) people with good pings standing ontop of a car getting annoyed if someone takes it.

The answer is simple: If you cannot educate those players, get the admin to ban them. You will soon be left with an educated player base. If the admin does not cooperate, then what are you doing playing on a server with crap players and crap admins? There are plenty of servers with an educated player base. Try CainsLair, Jolt, Titan, whatever pings best.

    Vehicle locking would be horrible.

The manta is without doubt my favourite vehicle, and one of the things I enjoy most is stealing someone else's (an enemy of course) manta and squashing him with it

When Im in a server where I notice there are people who are "new" to the game, I simply park my manta somewhere out of their reach when I get out to repair it or something. Cuz theres really nothing more annoying then getting out to heal it, only to see a teamm8 get in and steal it while ur still on top healing it....

So what Im saying really is: dont change any of the game elements, but instead change the way u play the game!

I definitely did not say lock it from the other team.

Amd yep, whenever I can I'll stand on the roof of my manta, and always on the roof of my tank to build nodes. But you can't stand on raptors.

But that's us. We're pretty skilled in this game, and know the little tricks, but most aren't.

As for not changing any of the game elements, I think the ONS plus changes are well worth considering implementing. But I'll start that in a new thread.
