Default A bot giving orders to YOU!

I always thought it was quite a shame this was never implemented before: the option to make a bot the leader, instead of you, so it will give orders to you and your team.

Say Lauren was appointed to be the leader of the team. She'd yell around orders to you and your teammates. When meaning you, this'd create:

Lauren: [Generic rank you've been given], defend the base!
    --->
    Lauren: Delta, defend the base!

.. to which you'd actually have to answer, and acknowledge this order.
If it'd take too long for you to accomplish what you've been told, Lauren would scream:
Lauren: Delta, defend the bloody base already!
Lauren: Delta, don't make me tell you again!

Well anyway, I've just always wanted to be able to shout ''On my way, red leader!'' with it actually having a purpose.

I'd love this as an option, whenever I'd don't feel like leading and have someone else do it.
And besides, it'd just look real cool to have a bot do the talking and taking on the role of the leader.

Would be fun, if the bot was smart enough to make the right decisions at the right times.

I like the idea very much.
It would help the first time players learn faster, and more fun stuff for the vets.

This should be very possible, especially with the new and imporved A.I. It would show how 'human-like' it really is.

I'd like to see the option for this too, especially higher skilled bots and/or more Aggressive characters.

But, a simpler behaviour along these lines has been possible since 2k3, without the giving orders part. Just tell a bot to, "Search and Destroy", or Freelance, and follow them.

if i would even play with bots, i wouldn't like being lead by someone who follows apples in the landscape...

Of course, why not? I was thinking about a single-player idea, in which if the player could only be the leader if he performs exceptionally well in a ladder. Otherwise he would merely start as a grunt in the team, but he would eventually still get chances to raise (or drop, for that matter) in rank depending on his actions.

I voted yes. If you’re going to be a leader you have to understand what the people under your command job is. What better way then being a grunt and taking orders. Once you get a pretty good understanding of what the job is all about then maybe try your hand at leading a team.

It could be useful as an option for first-timers to learn the game, and could be fun for Vets to use. And depending on the performance in your profile (internally recorded stats), the game can be adjusted to the player's tactical complexity.

It would really help the sense of immersion, brings the other players on your team to life, instead of them being stupid drones.

With the option of bots ordering you around, it would feel like a real team rather than you being responsible to a bunch of stupid AI's.

I like the sound of that, megalomaniacal, powermad bots.

Red Leader: Red grunt, get over there and take down that Darkwalker, right now!

Grunt: Wha!? You gotta be joking me, I've only just spawned, all I've got is this shi**y enforcer.

Leader: Don't make me take my belt off to you young man, you'll take it down or you'll be flat on your arse faster than you can say unemployed!

Grunt: Dammit, why can't *I* ever be leader..

I already get owned up in games.I will be damned if some bot is going to tell me wtf to do!

Maybe not for me, but I would like if also bots would start telling them n00bs:

"Now go for that friggin' node!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HEad outta the base and behind that little hill you will find that node on the left."

Would save us a lot of time...

Funny idea, could work if they are smart enough. However I'd rather choose myself what to do and the bot manages the rest of the team. Most of the time I'm too lazy to tell every single bot what to do.
I can already imagine that with a cartman voicepack: Accept my authorityyyyy!

Bots gave you orders in Quake 3, although I myself never read them, since they were so small all the way up there and i didn't have time to pay attention for them.

    Hmm...

    Commander bot: "Attack. this. position!"
    You: "Ten-four."
    Squadmate bot: "No can do."
    Squadmate bot: "Sorry sir."
    Squadmate bot: "Negative."

    Familiar?

The ones in UT2k7 would be audible, rather than just a text message.

Anyone remember Red Baron (WW1 flightsim) ?
In the singleplayer-campaign you had to follow orders of a flight/squad-leader until you reached a certain rank. It was great as it allowed you to focus on a few tasks at a time instead of being thrown in the deep end right from the start.

I'd love to see something similar in a fps. Even if it's not used outside the training/practice-levels it still be a cool new feature.

I dont think bot orders are good, since they're not that smart...the best thing for them is "need some backup".

Well, in case you missed it, bot AI is being improved significantly in UT2007.
They should feel alot more alive than with any other bots in games Epic has made.

Bots are not going to beat a human in a LONG time (more than you can live) when it comes to making the right decision and stuff. They could only ask some very basic stuff and I am pretty sure they wouldn't make them in any common sense.

I am a very independent fighter, I do not take orders from random people and only do something If I also think its right, and if I do not have something that seems more usefull from my eyes. In other words, bots would sure never give me order I would want to follow, and they would only yell more and more and suicide when they understands they are the worst leaders of the universe.

The idea in itself is not "bad", but I really doubt the AI would do a good job.

Lauren: Delta, defend the bloody base already!
Lauren: Delta, don't make me tell you again!
Innovative. i'd also like the ability to have the bots actually respond to the stream of verbal abuse i'm constantly hurling at them.

Bots giving Commands beeing the Leader. That was already in Quack3. The one nearest to the flag had to protect the base, etc....

Hmm If an onslaught map would be scattered in sectors (B-7, C-1) in UT2007 then it would be cool if bots report of incoming vehicles or an deploying SPMA .

    Example:
    Motig: 2 enemy Scorpions in B-3 heading North-east(or to B-4)!!;

Malcolm(Commander): An enemy SPMA is deploying in D-3 destroy it!!;(Nearest bot responds: I'm on it!)

Jacob: Deploying SPMA in A-7 bombing (3.) Powernode.

Satin: Incoming redeemer rocket in C-5!!!

Well text messages would be enough if: Location, Enemy, Ally would be viewed in these colors.

I always hated bots (UT2004) taunting meaningless orders (in onslaught) like: Im hit!(so what?); Man down(who cares!); I'm under heavy attack(How heavy??? Is a scorpion chaseing you???)

    What do u think?

    I agree and disagree.
AI is a long way from making 'perfect' decisions, but IMHO they are a heck of a lot better at strategy and tactics than most humans are.

I am a very independent fighter, I do not take orders from random people and only do something If I also think its right, and if I do not have something that seems more usefull from my eyes. ...
Thank you for proving my point about how selfish most 'humans' are.
Remember : there is no I in TEAM

You may not see the reason for the order, but that doesn't mean your leader doesn't.
And perhaps he gave that order, because you failed to supply him with the data he needed ...

I have more faith in bots when it comes to both giving and taking orders.

    // Pendrokar
Text-based orders/messages are the worst idea ever.
The game moves too fast for people to be able to read and understand those messages.
Voice + hud-indicators (a virtual waypoint appearing on-screen and a voice telling you to go 'there') is far more instructive and likely to be followed.
Telling someone to go to 'sector B3' requires the victim to understand he isn't in B3 to begin with.
