Big Grin Why this Game is called UNREAL Tournament 2007

Why this Game is called UNREAL Tournament 2007:
Because it is related to the original Classic Game "Unreal".
Meaning: The more the game returns to its roots, instead of the more unrealistic it becomes, it becomes more Unreal.

I was just bored about that phrase often used to justify arguements for things like Lighning Gun, Dodge Jump, etc.

Actually, the previous game was called "Unreal Tournament 2004" just check the title screen and not UT2004 (that's more of a nick name).
I wouldn't think to much of it.

I always took Unreal like a way to describe how you simply would wish all this was not reality (in unreal 1). Its some kind of ironic name to me because Unreal is not more unreal than many shooters and is quite realistic in many ways.

But I don't know about any official meaning.

I didnīt say anything about a prequel. Unreal 1 is the first game of the series !

Because so often you see folks resorting the old "it's called UNREAL for a reason!1ones!" argument, which I agree is pretty annoying - since the ureal part is as said above, simply because the first game was called Unreal.
Anyone who's got unreal knows why it's called unreal, since it says so on the box.

Although I wouldn't have gone so far as to post a whole new thread about it..

I think the Unreal title means that its outstanding and insane, because at the time of Unreal 1 there was only quake 2 to compete in, which the unreal 1engine destroyed it. I believe they call it Unreal becauses its insanely stunning

Hehe, I am used to it (look at my join date)... ...all them posts came from INA (so much for being used to pointless threads ). But I still have a little hope in mankind. So, I think pointing out pointless threads is useful. If only 1 person out of 100 realizes that, we will have a slightly better world/forum.

Yeah, saw that. But apperently not enough people vote. There are really graet threads with a lot of gamplay/gameindustry-insight that do not get votes at all.

And... ...12 retards* giving a thread five stars doesn't mean as much to me as 2 intelligent and educated persons giving it 5 stars.... ...if you know what I mean?

On the back of the box [of the original Unreal]: ...

"IT'S CALLED UNREAL BECAUSE IT IS!"

Seriously though, I can't believe you threw away the box!! It was one of the most beautiful game boxes I've ever seen (without looking like a glossy mag). Well ... kind of! Maybe that's rather subjective.

Let me tell you my story - I originally got Unreal 1 from a second hand shop as a CD and manual only. Only the second computer game I bought with my own money - and it was such a deeply breathtaking and atmospheric game (despite not being very sophisticated beyond its graphics), that later I went back to the same shop and found a boxed copy - and I actually forked out again to get a boxed copy .... and furthermore, I considered re-selling my old CD, but in the end I couldn't because that was the CD I'd originally enjoyed the game from!

I must be a fanboy, eh?
On the other hand, it's a good form of copy protection if you can engender a sense of needing to have the physical product!

P.S. - I originally wanted to buy a new boxed copy of Unreal 1 from the budget department store, but I was waiting to reward myself after exams. Sadly, when I went to get it, they were out of stock. Other shops had it, but at nearly double the price (normal retail) I just couldn't afford it. So that's why I ended up at the second hand shop. Ironically, buying my two copies has added up to nearly the normal retail price... plus a few years later I got a free copy on the front of a game mag!! No substitute though - the free version had no level editor.

I didn't think this thread was pointless ... I just signed up so I could reply to it!!

And to relate back to UT2007 - it's because of my awesome experience with Unreal 1 that I've bought all the UT games since (and the atrocious Unreal 2) - I can't wait to play and play with (edit) Unreal Tournament 2007

God, is that annoying. I wholeheartedly agree, and thanks for making the thread... though I'm afraid most of the people here still won't get it.

You are in the real world.. but it's like no world you have ever known. You are an univited guest in the fastest, sleekest, most beautiful 3D world ever created. Live it. Breathe it. Survive it.
    Unreal. Alter your reality... forever
(I've tried to reproduce the same text colour, but it's very late & I can't tell if it's a wheat colour, or just shiny gold text that's gone a bit dull with age)

Basically it was just to make it sound all bad-ass, no deep & meaningful diatribe on the nature of reality, of what should exist and what should not, & all that stuff, simply because it sounds cool on a big ole' cardboard box.

Damn, my fingers are all dusty now..

*EDIT* Looks again at those old specs:

    Pentium166, 200MMX recommended - gasp!
(I can't even remember what MMX stood for)
    16MB ram, 32mb rec'd
450mb on your HD for a full install
    A CD-rom drive!!one!
    A win 95-compatible sound card
PCI Local bus gfx card (recommended)

    *nostalgic sigh*

Thanks for that, BigJim, I'd forgotten that bit. (Working in a different state to where most of my stuff is at the moment, including my coveted Unreal 1 box!)

Myself I'd call it awe-inspiring and breath-taking, rather than "bad-ass" - there were some great screenshots beside it, on - as you say - the big ole' cardboard box. UT2007 screenshots give me awe-inspiration with their detail and clarity, and some breath-taking due to the atmosphere, but it doesn't quite hit that "explore amazing alien world" thrill [I guess it's not meant to - that's what GearsofWar is for this time around]. It'll still be great!

MMX stands for MultiMedia eXtensions. Isn't it kind of like a predecessor to the SSE2 and SSE3 instructions that CPU's boast about these days.

I still don't find this thread purposeless. For those of you that do, I think the question is not "why is this thread here?" but "why are you reading this thread?" - just my opinion

You missed the point of this thread. I donīt really think the game should be called otherwise!

Then next time make a thread that is named:

"Unreal Tournament 2007 should be called Unreal Tournament 2007"

Or don't make a thread at all.
