Ok, so this might not be the right age range to pitch this to, but I just rented Harry Potter: Quidditch (EA Games, Gamecube) and I was kinda surprized to find it a relativly gratifying sports game, however too linear for me and too much computer-player-oriented teamwork.
It was only a fraction of the feeling I get from BR, but it was there. So, make a game type for it to take into account all the rules.
First, there should be a class selection system:
Beaters (only 2), Chasers (any number), Seekers (only 1), and Keepers (only 1).
The flight system should be a modified Raptor, in the sense that you can hang in midair and look-to-aim, but you cannot strafe (excepting the Keeper).
Chasers: These are the all purpose ball carriers and point scorers. They fly at the average speed.
Bludgers and Beaters: Bludgers are the flying balls that seem to have a mind of their own. They can collide with players causing them to fumble and temporarily incapacitate them. The "Beaters" can hit these Bludgers at players in the pitch (but not Keepers) to make them fumble or take them out of the play. This mechanic can be handled by picking up moving powerups in midair, that allow a player to hit a Bludger with their bat. The EA version of this game allowed you to steer the Bludger until it hit a player or was batted away by another Beater. This could be achieved via the Redeemer cam, or I would prefer an third person view of the Bludger. Also, the Bludger has a limited amount of time to hit its target or the player loses control and its back to normal play. BTW, Beaters as a class are slower than the Chasers and Seekers.
Keepers: The Keeper stays back to guard the 3 goals. He can't leave the goal area because of a blocking volume that the ball can pass through but the players (and Bludgers) cannot. He has the ability to strafe in a similar way that Deathball keepers can dodge and the average speed.
BTW, for those out of the HP loop, goals are worth 10 points.
The Golden Snitch and Seekers: This is the fast moving golden ball with dragonfly wings. It is worth 100 points and ends the game. Usually in the books and the movies, the Snitch is always in play, but in this version, when the time limit has passed, the snitch is released, or "visable". Anyone can catch it, but the Seekers have a boost of speed which makes them Ideal for catching the Snitch. Seekers however can only catch the Snitch, receive, and make passes. They cannot make a shot on goal or steal the ball.
Yes Yes Yes this is another crazy drawn out idea probably beyond the scope of the engine, but its an idea forum and that is mine.
