Post DM-UnrealVille is out For 2K4!!

    Name: DM-UnrealVille

    Version: 2.0

    Compatibility: UT2k4

Description: Welcome To Mid-Town Unrealville. It's 3 in the morning with thunderstorms looming, but the fragfest is still going strong. People gather in the compound for a little R&R, but that's means Reload and Rampage in UnrealVille! It's a very large map file due to the amount of detail, but it is optimized for machines with lower specs. You'll find plenty of playerstarts, but the power-ups are scattered far and wide, so make sure you aren't wasting that ammo! Stop by Big E's for the best subs in town and hit the 23 Hotel & Casino when you need a break from it all. Unzip to your UT2K4 folder and you should be good to go! Have fun! Gos

Comments: ** Pay close attention to the sounds when you "gotta go real bad" :P **

I love the atmosphere in this map, plus it looks pretty realistic for a town, and the lighting isn't too bad.

Although I wonder why my rig lags on this...

Because the map is so good, your feeble computer can't take it!

    Real Answer: Who knows?

    Thanks for the comments.

I imagine it's going to lag a bit on some machines due to it's amount of deatil, but I made my best attempt to zone and optimize it for lower spec machines,

There are 12 player starts, but it's a big enough map for more if you desire!

maps pretty good, but I hate how the swinging doors end up swinging toward you half the time.... Anybody ever engineer a way to have a mover go a certain direction depending on where its triggered from? because that would make this map SOOO much better.... Good work though man. it looks nice and has lots of detail.

I'd love to download, but I'm not going to register to do it.

you just need 2 doors. a trigger on either side. If triggered from side A door A opens away from you and door B hides in wall/floor (you don't see it move) then vice versa for side B

If anyone has any other place I may post the map for download, let me know. I only know of Unreal Playground.

    Thanks

I'm sorry i dont share your opinion of the playground. Then again, this isnt my "prefered" unreal forum.

No blood, no foul. Play on, and such.

Very fun and Well made map. Such great detail! I explored for almost an hour before playing it. It's too big (filesize) for online though, and it lags on the server

It's definitely one for our Lan though, this map ROCKS with Chaos weapons!

    OK, first impressions...

    First, run a beta..

    Next..
Cull distance, so alot of this stuff isnt viewable from a distance. There is alot of open area to draw here.

You have alot of zones, but there are alot of other zones you could have put in, aot of them in areas you cant get into.

Bot pathing isnt so hot, they get stuck.

This is a good map, but its not optimized as well as it could be.

    Hey..

Thanks for the feedback. I ran out of time for the contest, otherwise you would have seen more optimizations (I'm pretty picky about that). There is only fog in the skybox, I had it in the main zone, but it just never looked as good as I wanted it to. The same goes for the botpaths. I didn't really make this for bots, but I tossed the botpaths in anyway for people to check out the level. Again, the deadline for the contest bit me in the butt :P I had some real life issues in the final week of the contest and that set me back a few days.

    Thanks

Not to criticize you, but I there are plenty of other map hosting sites. Why is everyone all of a sudden only using UP for their hosting? Not everyone wants to sign in and let some website sell their personal information. Besides, who wants to keep tabs on all those accounts if every website you visit requires a sign-up and login to use their services? I did like UP when they didn't require a login to DL stuff.

I have to do that until, I reconfigured it to allow UP to use cookies, and recieve information from them, now I can download from UP, with out truning NIS off.

Also it saves my MSN from logging me out.

    [edit] Nice map.

But it killed my Celeron

Sorry about that :noob: I built it on my Athlon XP3200+, FX5900XT, 1 gig PC3200 DDR... It plays just fine for me.... lol

I have a bad habit of over-detailing my maps.. My last one was about 60 megs... I'm guessing I need to back off the eye-candy and high detailed shadows... Or at least learn how to optimize a little better!

    Thanks!

This map BADLY needs optimization. I went into wireframe view (using the "rmode 1" command) and found that if I was to stand in one corner of the map and look in the opposite one it rendered just about everything. Zoning would really improve the performance on this map.

I DID zone all of the buildings if you check in the editor. However I ran out of time to do any additional optimizations on the outside areas before the contest deadline. I will re-visit the map soon and optimize it further and re-post it for download. I'm currently working on a demo reel and beginning a new map for the next phase of the contest.

Thanks for checking it out though.

Thanks for the mirrors! I missed this map until now, it's really enjoyable. Would have liked to have been able to enter all the buildings, but it's still a good map.

nice city map, almost too wide-open but some tighter spots here and there, needs custom music; bots are good and the door problem is definitely an issue; this is definitely a fun map to explore and I also like the lightning in the clouds, courtyard, street lights, cobblestone buildings, fall colors, casino, subshop, computer monitors, pool tables, and weapon/item placement.
