VoIP means Voice Over IP. As far as I know its the same technology used to phone over the Internet. Maybe ATARI/EPIC doesn't want to harm Telephone corps because one minute of an Internet connection is much cheaper then regular phone calls ??? I don't know whats the reason. But...

    My experiences are:
1- a listen server is much slower than an instant action game
2- a dedicated server can be caught by a UT2004 client running on the same machine
3- running a client and a dedicated server on the same machine is as fast as a listen server

conclusion: why don't you run a dedicated server and client connected to the server on the same PC.

Btw, this solution works fine for me and my neighbor

What is a listen server anyway? How do you use it?

There are two ways to host a network game on your own server. On one hand you can start the server in listen mode, that way a client is automaticly connected to the hosted server (the client listens), and you can play on your server.

On the other hand you can run the server in dedicated mode, that closes UT2004 and starts UT2004 engine via 'UCC'. If you want to play on your hosted server, you have to start another UT2004 then 'join game' and you have to search for your ded. server in the network browser. Then you can connect to your server and play on it.

Server rules are set in 'host gam' > 'server rules' menu. To start the server you'll find the two different buttons (listen/dedicated) below.

Listen server hosts will not have any voice chat functionality - this is by design.
