    Cool lambs to the slaughter

I am an old console gamer, who one day came home with a new home system and wanted to play some games. Got UT2004 demo from a mate and had heard alot so went for it. spent a week before going online.......joined a few games and got smashed and trashed.... did not do much... got zero respect.

    any ideas how to enjoy..

should i bother buying the full game..

i dont want to die a lamb..

if you dont really want to get smashed online all the time, the single player mode is going pretty well in ut2004. sp mode and instant action allows you to up the skill of the bots so you can practice practice practice with intelligient bots until you feel you are ok. then get ready to be smashed by online players again. but seriously, if you are that new, single player and instant action will help you alot in order to be ready for online players. at least enough to have online fun.

one way i used to avoid the noob slaughter, was to try and find a server that didnt have too many people in it,and try that, but some times you find one with some one is wayyyy too good at,or has cheats enabled.also a good idea is to play bots to get to know the maps.it will pay off in the long run to know the maps really good.team deathmatch and CTF are games where the "super men" avoid for the most part, give them a try too.
buy the full game and start the learning curve!! it is a fun game,i like it a LOT.i even play the bots at inhuman skill levels, and do ok agains t them.but then again, average humans are more challenging too.maybe the best way is to find a few players near you(to have a good connection) and play regular with them.also, join as many UT03/04 forums you can find, they have servers listed in some, and tons of info to help you learn the ropes.good luck!!!

    practice is the key ...

play instant action for a while and when the bots become tedious and you know there moves just put them up a level untill you feel the are becoming to tedious and predictable again

once you can beat the harder bots you can really kick some ass

Why dont you and your mate play a few lan games together and then meet online for practice to go 2 on 2 with some some other n00bs (no offence) lol

    good luck

    practice is the key ...

Yeah, use Instant Action to practice against some of the harder bots. Set it to auto-adjust their difficulty, and see how high you can get it by pressing F1.

If you have any FPS experience you will be alright, I mainly like to play ONS and no matter how good you are you are gonna die in one way or another.

So don't sweat it, just go have fun.

    Hi,

As the previous people in here said, practice is the key. Spend a fair old time with the bots, for me I found when I could hold my own against the Adept bots I found it easier to play in ONS. However in good Online deathmatches, you really need to holding your own against Masterful bots and above.

Spectate the good players on a server, man, that is a good one, a real eye opener. Really good players don't don't do things randomly, you can see a pattern to how they approach situations and you can learn a lot from them.

In many cases losses occur because of lack of knowledge of a map, take the time to know your fave gametype and the maps, where your preferred weapons are, power ups, health etc. Makes a huge difference.

And in team based games know what your strengths and weaknesses are. i.e. I am not really a good fragger, so to help my team in onslaught, I do repairs of nodes, avril support, know where to drive the Hellbender to for strategic holding of positions, defend the powernode that allows the team to attack the enemy power core etc You can make a huge difference to a team with that kind of game and get a lot of fun out of it as well. Just takes time. Hang in there !

    EZ,

    B

OK I suck huge monkey nuts at this game...

I couldn't hit a barn door with primary flak if I was holding the handle.

    So...

I play ONS all the time.

I can charge a node, taxi players to nodes they dont want to be at and camp on a redeemer spawn point til the cows come home...

I leave the raptors and the mantas for the better players, I only jump in the leviathon if someone else is driving and I can heal vehicles whilst waiting for the next manta to clip my head off.

But the game looks awesome... I can and do wander for minutes at a time through the fabulous terrain and marvel as the sunlight spills from behind smoke charged clouds.

Even if you Suck and I certainly do you should buy this game. It has me laughing so hard and marveling at the scenery.

I love UT2004, it just dont love me.

Lots of good advice, and they are right "practice".
Play some invasion, that way you are playing against bots alongside real people.
Find a clan that teaches newbies, they are around i know because mine does. Even though that wont make you good unless
    Practice
    practice
    practice
    BTW link under my name.

    Play some invasion
    Very good suggestion !
I still cut teeth on playing this a lot. While human players are better
you can feel comfortable while learning.

There you can see how others play through spectatng.

A MUST is to learn the double dodge jumps that will get you out of a lot of trouble.....

    cheers everyone,

I will keep up the practice, but time is precious. RtD- its good to know that you get trashed aswell. hey someone gotta go.
    Elric- great link,
When is best to go on-line, which server! which clan! I want to play and have a laugh but not with a buch of bloodthirsty goons. i played a few days ago and got someone on the same side in a ONS to find them finding me all game a shooting everything at me. I thought a NOOB at the time but whenever i respawned- he was allready there. RuFF that was his name.
Yeah that was alot of fun that night- i really hope I did not upset anybody by joining a game.

ohhh its my ball, and your not playing- now thats RuFF.

Just join in, do your best.
I very much doubt the idiot shooting you all the time was a noob, most noobs i know and have met are quite the opposite, give em a little advice and off they go.
And we all get owned (beaten).
Ha ha who's the first thats gonna say "well i dont", well i dont belive it unless your name just happens to be Jonathan Wendal.
Anytime you wanna play tolsta click the link under my name and make your way to the forum, would be happy to play with ya mate.
Any noob flamers haters "get on a passworded server" if you cant find one Hmmm maybe your the noob!!!

    practice practice practice.

Like any thing, the more you practice the better you get. If you're playing on a team, use some strategies since any organized team will always win.

Oh, practice with bots until you can own them (Up to Godlike). You should be ready for online play then, but still will need lots of practice.

Another way to get better (besides playing SP or instant action) is to log into an online server and enter it as a spectator. You can rotate the person you are spectating and see how they play, what kind of tactics they use, where are they going for the good weapons, heals, etc. Remember, knowledge is power, so watching a good player will help you out.

    Hope that helps,
    PL
