well, i figured out what my problem was, and it might also solve some of the other problems here... it was Windows XP Service Pack 2... :weird:
what's meant to be the biggest XP update yet has caused major crashes on both mine and my dad's PCs, hope that helps..

Also, all the drivers were up to date and all that, i made sure it was fully updated, so it was almost certainly SP2 that caused the damage...

    Default General Protection Fault Issue

My husband and I are both getting GPF's while LAN playing. Here is a copy of the log: (although you'll probably tell me it's hardware related)

    Default Update

    FYI,

The CPF errors only seem to be happening during InstaGib games. Seems to crash with Mutators. Makes sense after re-reading the logs. Game plays great in DM/TDM/ONS modes.

that grey stuff is heatsink compound just so ya know...that is kinda important for your CPU, and heatsink.

    Default General Protection Failure Curse

The game gives me this error after around 3 minutes of play:

    UT2004 Build UT2004_Build_[2004-11-11_10.48]

OS: Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600)
CPU: AuthenticAMD PentiumPro-class processor @ 2107 MHz with 510MB RAM
    Video: RADEON 9600 Series (Omega 2.5.97) (6497)

    General protection fault!

    History: ParticleIterator::Update <- AxEmitter::Tick <- TickAllActors <- ULevel::Tick <- (NetMode=0) <- TickLevel <- UGameEngine::Tick <- Level Rrajigar <- UpdateWorld <- MainLoop <- FMallocWindows::Free <- FMallocWindows::Realloc <- 676F4C57 0 FArray <- FArray::Realloc <- 0*2 <- FMallocWindows::Free

Well, lets cut off the obvious things, I have already have the last game patch, direct x, drivers and windows updates (except SP2, which sucks hard), I have already checked my voltage and temperature settings and they are stable even under heavy loads. I must say that I have already ran many stress tests and benchmarks (like Sandra and 3DMark) and my system never failed, not even a glitch... Except fot UT 2k4 and this Prime95 program. I heard of it here and downloaded it to figure out that this program is not a stress tester, but a program to find some kind of geeky prime number and send to a research center... But I used it to test and it gave me 2 messages: "Error: Round is 0.5, excpected less than 0.4" fot the lighter test and "Illegal Sumeout error: Possible Hardware Failure" for the heavier one; both less than 2 minutes after the test began. I heard that AGP aperture size bigger than 128 MB and AGP fastwrite might cause system to be unstable so I turned both off; but it didn´t work for me. I must repeat, UT 2k4 and Prime 95 are the only programs that present problems, I have already ran many other games as well as "CPU Stability Test" to test the CPU and "Memoy Gold" to test memory, and they were both aproved. I wonder if it has something to do with my BIOS settings and hope that someone can help me, because I really like UT 2k4.

These are my modest system specs:

Ahtlon XP Barton 2800+ FSB 333 (166x2) running at ~2100 mhz
One 512 MB Spektek Memory Stick DDR 333 mhz
80 GB Western Digital IDE Har Drive
Abit KV7 (KT 600 chipset) Mobo
ATI 9600 PRO 256 DDR VRAM (with latest Omega Drivers)
    Windows XP PRO SP1

    Default Ram

For those installing pc3200 make sure you have the chips in the right slots . To run dual channel on my asus board (p4p8x) I need to put a chip in slot 1 and 3 , or all 4 slots require the same size module . Even so , some chips may not be able to handle dual channel speed .

    1 gig ram

How do I check my CPU FSB speed and my RAM FSB speed?

    How do I adjust it?

    My current rig:

    ASUS a7n8x deluxe
    PNY Gforce 4600 ti
    1 GB of DDR 400

I do believe this board has a 333FSB.

    I just got a ASUS a7n8x-E deluxe...any good?
It has the wi-fi feature, somethin my old one don't.
Does the ASUS a7n8x-E have ASUS COP?
    I like that safety feature.
If it doesnt, is there a program I can get to emulate it?

    Also another query:
I am plannin on makin this new system into a 98 SE system.
Does 98 support the latest DirectX ?

I have downloaded all the utilities yall have suggested and shall run them on the new system I'm gonna build this weekend.

Thanks in advance for any assist. This is a great thread, damn I love this community.

I would try to go xp pro . I find its a solid os and you can install it on both puters np . I use a broadband router myself . Usually the motherboard manufacturer will tell you in the manual the best type of ram to use . Timing is important .

Might want to upgrade the bios in your new board b4 the big install . ONLY DO THIS IN DOS MODE . I destroyed a brand new board once doing it through Win98 SE.

I am currently enrolled in a A+ Certification Prep class.
I am in the Intermediate portion of the class, dealing with the OS's, thusly I required to have two systems, one runnin XP or 2k and one running Win98.

My main system, which I'm takin the course on, is runnin XP pro SP1. The system I am puttin together this weekend is gonna run 98.

I haven't worked with 98 in so long. I am sure I have forgotten a ton about it and its quirks. I haven't run it since the glory days of UT GOTY.

I am not having any issues with my system at all with UT or anything else with my main, this thread just caught my eye. I am a hound for diagnostics programs and other tools/utilities to help our systems run more efficiently. I wanna be the best I can be at my chosen profession.

We haven't gotten to the Advanced Hardware portion yet, thusly I haven't messed with advanced stuff much in my CMOS.

I really wanna know how to check the FSB speed on my system and if there is a way to tell what the FSB on the RAM or the CPU, I kinda sort threw away the documentation that came with it a long time ago.

Microsoft no longer supports Win98 I believe . As in upgrades, sp's . I find XP to be less user friendly but a helluva lot more solid . But its good to know how to set up any os . Hell , I can still set up a dos based LAN . LOL .

Default Diagnose XP - A Windows XP Diagnostic Guide

Diagnose XP - A Windows XP Diagnostic Guide

"Diagnosing System problems can be very complicated and time consuming. There are no simple solutions. Windows XP systems should never Lock-up (freeze), display Blue Screen Stop Errors or Randomly Reboot. These are all warning signs something is wrong or misconfigured with your system."

This includes instructions on how to use Prime95 and Memtest86+. Prime95 is meerly a system stability tester, it does not isolate or identify what is wrong. DO NOT use it as a memory tester use Memtest86+ instead. However before testing you cannot be overclocking and have to be 100% sure the system is free of Viruses and Spyware (Steps 1 and 2).

It is next to impossible for any sort of bugs in UT or any other game to crash Windows 2000 or XP. If Windows 2000 or XP is crashing, UT or the game that was running at the time meerly uncovered a system problem. Such as a Driver issue or defective hardware.

    Default Check your power supply

I admit I haven't been able to read all the posts in this thread. I too had random lockups during UT play. After lots of frustration I found my power supply was going bad. During the heavy play the voltage went unstable and locked me up. New P.S., no problems...

The link on the first post says that it only works for Pentium based systems. Is there anything like this for AMD chipsets?

Not sure if anybody mentioned it but ... SpeedFan is also a great program to monitor your CPU speed/load/temp, among other things. It also allows you to overclock, but I wouldn't do it

    Default Arrrgh

I have had the same memory/cpu/video card etc for awhile, no prob, UT04 ran great for over a year (OS: Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600)
CPU: AuthenticAMD PentiumPro-class processor @ 1336 MHz with 767MB RAM
    Video: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 (8421)

A few months ago my screen starts minimizing during gameplay only, never during ANY other app. then I start getting game crashes & blue screen system freezes 5-15 minutes into play as described in prevous posts.

What might have gone wrong? memory module gone bad? I';ve seen that mentioned... Lowering the timing speed has helped people?, bad power supply some said was their problem, etc..
I do not have the tech knowledge that many here have. Ex- i tried D/L'ing the mem test mentioned in post 1 & cant even get that running.

Any simple things I can do or I need to get a tech/gaming savvy buddy over here?(thats a prob as they live kinda far away)
    Thanks for any help!

Hi, I keep getting this error when I try to enter a server or host my own one.
I didn't have this problem at first but after a day of playing UT2004 it started crashing and giving these error reports.

This thread is someone outdated, but I thought I would mention -

I have been experiencing - only lately after 2 years - stuttering and freezing issues in the game. I figured hardware is failing somewhere, but I ran the Prime test mentioned in this forum. I came out free and clear. Then, to double check, I ran Windows Memory Test. I failed. Dismally. Not sure why the difference, but I will be replacing my RAM based upon the WinMemTest results.

Anyone have any opinions on the WinMemTest?

The Prime stress test looks nice, but who made it? Apparently it is designed to test computers which will sit around all day and search for large prime numbers. BTW, do not let this test use any of your memory, as it will utilize it in its quest for the largest prime in existence.

    NEW POWER SUPPLY UNIT

    Seriously...

Over the last year, I have replaced my sound card, graphics card, hard drive, and power supply.

The power supply was last device I updated and my system has never ran so good. I went from a 350w to 540w. $100 power supply. No more crashes, glitches, artifacts, or hitches. My performance has increased across the board. The only hitching I get is from disk accessing and perhaps some tearing from having Vsync off.

uh it should be common knowledge that most computer hardware will require a minimum 500 watts..... and yes... OEM power supply's suck.

    Ok what the hell.

I had this game since it came out, and it ran on the same system all this time up until today. The game itself starts, then i go and click JOIN GAME, and when i click on INTERNET..... it goes to the server browser, but before any servers appear, the game crashes on me and then i get this error:

Yea same problem here (See my thread "Ah crap..."), only mine got worse, but started the exact same way. I've had UT2004 for 2 years now with no problems and all of a sudden today, I got the same error (same proc and OS, but only 1GB of RAM and a GeForce 7600GT).

The conclusion was while there is no broken parts in the system, yet it is not suitable for high load in extended periods of time and to solve it.
