A good tip for new people that feel overwhelmed is to "Spectate" a few games and watch how the players at the top of the lists perform.

You can obtain quite a few tips that way

Quite true. See how people move (It's possible to do that?!?!?!?), you'll find about "secret" spots (like ledges that you need a trick jump to get to but that may give you a a position advantage, or location of power-ups, etc...)


by the way, anyone know how to start UnrealTV?

I think UnrealTV is launched through the system console. I dunno the code for it, though.

And this is the best advice you will hear. You can learn a lot by watching the top players on a server. Often you can learn quite a few lessons from them.

Or you could just ask the good players online for tips.
If the server isnt too crowded Im sure they will help you.

hehe.. I tried spectating a few times with the demo.. when the winning team detroyed the power core in ONS the view switched to it blowing up.. but then when the new match started, the view was stuck there and nothing would change it to new players.

I went to the menu and clicked what I thought was the spectate button again, only it started asking which team... so I thought it was asking for a player to start following. OK, all seemed well and I rejoined the game and was able to fly around the map at will. I couldn't seem to switch views to follow a player as before, but I thought that might have something to do with the bug that kept me locked onto the power core.

It was only when that match finished and I saw the score board that I realised to my embarassment that I'd actually 'joined' the match instead of spectated (if you are already spectating the button becomes join instead).. and I'd spent the entire match in the flyby mode instead of spawning.. and everyone could see

D'oh!

I was too embarassed to try playing after that..

I agree with that and there are a few things I would also add.

It probably would be a good idea to open the console and type behindview 0. Then you can watch other people play from the perspective you would normally play in.

Also if you can figure out the demo recorder when you find good to pro player online record it because you may have to watch it a few times to really see all the little details. I know I have learned a bunch of jumps and stuff that I could do but never thought of that way.

yeah, by default you spectate in "behindview 1" mode which shows you a 3rd person view of the world. Best for learning jumps and map usage.
Spectating in "behindview 0" mode is a totally different experience and shows you what it would look like if you played like that player. It's great to see how people aim and anticipate the other guy's moves for example.
Both are useful in their own way.

Great advice about spectating, you can learn tactics, weapon placement of the maps and more that way.
For the behindview thing, it is already bound to F4 for your convenience in UT2004, so you can swap 3rd to first person easily.
