Post OMG! Finally found a fix for all my UTK4 problems!!!

I was having this problem where my computer would restart or the game would crash and gimme some sort of general protection error screen. So I tried a bunch of different things and finally found a solution. I went into the audio option and turned of EAX. I put it to no sound and have been enjoying UTK4 for the past 2 hours without anything going wrong It kind of puts my Audigy 2 ZS Platinum card and Logitech Z-5300 speakers to no use... but atleast I can play the friggin game now. By the way I was also having major performance issues in BF Vietnam and I turned the audio to Miles Fast 2D. And now instead of getting 10 FPS I get 50-60 fps with everything on high.

What I don't get is that I'm running the latest drivers for my soundcard and I did a complete re-format b4 installing BFV and UTK4. Anyways this will solve my problem until they release a patch. Hopefully this will help some of you out there.

    My rig:

    -Athlon XP 1800+ OC'd to 2.5GHz
    -Soltek 75FRN-L mobo
-1 gig ram in dual channel
    -Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
    -ATI Radeon 9600 pro

Odd? I have the original Audigy Platinum EX, and I have the same problems with EAX. My system starts good, and quickly goes into slow mo as it tries to handle the sound. I didn't have any success with the EAX in UT or UT2k3 either. I haven't tried it yet with just the hardware setting in 2k4 (try and keep the 'noise' down for my wife so far). If you, or anyone for that matter figures it out, I would love to hear the answer. At one point a while back I messed with the latency in my BIOS as per a newsgroup posting, and it improved my entire system performance (sorry, don't remember what I did), but still EAX doesn't seem to work well.

I can only use 3D audio to get everything. Once I choose the others I lose all music and some sounds. I'm running an Audigy gamer, and would also like to know why it won't work. I'm sure I'd have better performance once the sound is processed in the card, but I can't give up the sound/music and won't be able to use 'em until whatever is wrong is fixed.

I found MY solution!!! Maybe it will work for you...

After visiting the creative labs site (www.creativelabs.com), I found article / solution ID #11103.

I tried the 15-16M hole in the BIOS, with no change, BUT I do have a motherboard with a VIA chipset. I followed the link to the article regarding VIA chipsets (http://www.tecchannel.de/hardware/817/index.html), read it through, and downloaded the indicated patch (last one listed - VIA released 1.04 ID'd as 1.01)

    http://www.tecchannel.de/cgi-bin/download/rpp1.01.zip

Once installed, and my system restarted, I went into UT2k4 and enabled H/W sound with EAX. While it did work, it still wasn't great - choppy. Then came the ultimate resolution... I DISABLED the "use system driver" option in the Audio settings menu. Now, she is smooth, and has EAX and H/W sound!!!

    BoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoM!!!

Do you know if unchecking use system driver helps fps on any sound card?

I disabled EAX and currently using Safe Mode. The only difference I notice is no 3D sound, but my fps have gone up 15+. I'm still checking it out... but don't blame this on Atari; this is not the first time Sound Blaster cards have caused problems

Only having one soundcard/PC, I can't say. All I can suggest, is to try it. While I don't know much about hardware, I know from working with software that the best way to tweak things is to experiment.

I have found though, that if I "plug in" (put on headphones), and I switch to 3d audio (non HW) so I don't lose anything with only 2 speakers, it slows down if I DON'T use the system driver.

So essentially what I have found:
    - 3d audio (non HW) use the system driver
    - HW 3d audio disable the system driver
    - HW 3d audio + EAX disable the system driver

This is from my own experiences and experiments, all I can suggest is to try it yourself. At worst you should only have to reboot and change the setting next time you start the game.

Overall, my initial problem had nothing to do with my sound card, it was the chipset on my motherboard screwing with my soundcard, so don't rule out other possible conflicts in your setup.

    Good luck.

I thought it was only me. I recently bought an Audigy 2 ZS card similar to the one shown in the instruction manual of ut2004. If I put the audio on 3D, I get decent sound, and decent fps. If I try to put it on HD, or HD EAX, I get wonderful sound, but horrible fps (around 10-15 fps).

Funny, it's advertised for use in ut2004, but it's basicly useless to take full advantage of it.......

If you have the latest VIA 4in1 drivers, there shouldn't be a need for that patch cuz the patch is like 3 years old. Get the latest 4in1 drivers from www.viaarena.com.
