Default Won't spawn when testing the map

Hi guys. I'm new to unrealed so I've been wokring very slowly through the tutorial videos from 3dbuzz. I'm up to a box room with a few textures, one spawn point, a rocket launcher pickup and one single light.

My problem is that when I hit the "play map" button the editor loads up the game and the map but I don't spawn in the level (there's no press fire to begin the map just starts up.) I spawn as a spectator and I can't press fire once the game has loaded to join the game.

Am I doing something wrong or missing an actor or something for this to be happening?

    any help appreciated

P.S this is the ut2004 build of the editor I'm working with.

Did you press the "Build All" button before testing? Building in a sense ties the entire map together, or something.

Make sure your spawn is not to close to the ground try moving it up a bit. Or not to close to a wall. Do you get an error when you do a build all?

Make sure you added a player start point. and add it a little off the groud too, if your player kinda drops to the ground thats fine, but you dont want people to spawn in the floor.

no error when building and the spawn in deffinetly far away enough from the wall/floor.

I tried opening up the map with ut2004 instead of using the editor and it loaded but I still was a spectator and about 5 bots spawned in the room instead.

Hm maybe there is an option on the playerstart that only spectators spawn or... a false gametype is selected in the "lever properties".. dunno :/

Ok it turns out I can spawn in the map it's just I have to press escape and press join once the game has started so that's one problem averted.

Next is how do I turn off this 'going into spectator mode' when I run the map??

Dude, If all your settings are at their default then this should not be happening - if you like I can check your map for you and see if it does the same thing you might not have the right type of actor for your player start or something simple like that - email me if you want me to check your map for you if its only a small room the file should be small enough to email - then after looking at it I can tell you what you did wrong (if you did anything wrong) but let me know - email: chrustec@dodo.com.au or you can catch me on ICQ: 78077907 or msn: chrustec@hotmail.com I have alot of time today so If I can help you in any way let me know - helps me practise my skills too

I had this problem too. after joining the game after it started, the next time I ran the game from the editor the problem was solved. the odd thing with the error when I had it was I would auto spectat no matter what map I ran from the editor.

Right click in a viewport, Level properties, Level info section, set for default gametype "xGame.xDeathMatch", save your map as a different filename and reload UT, should work then.

Sometimes it likes to make you use last man standing mode so you just spawn as a spectator.

If you have ever played a map in UT and switched from player to spectator or spectator to player you will find this line

SpectatorOnly=n where n=1 or 0 (it will be right at the top)

    in your User.ini file.

Just delete that line and you will get rid of going into spectator from the editor.

Could this be added to the FAQ list?
I had that problem, and I've seen so many people having this problem too, that I think it should be the very next FAQ after the White Viewports one!
