For some reason i still cant play with out the disk even with the patch

are you sure you have got the right patch. there have been three or four released and it is only the latest 2225 patch that contains the no cd patch.

Well, you said Disc 1. I can't speak for Windows PCs but with the Macintosh, when you first install the game, you have to select "Full Install" to install the whole thing onto your hard drive. Perhaps they have something like that in the Windows version.
On the Mac, your key disk is the second CD-ROM disc that you have to keep in your computer while you play the game. The latest patch for the Mac supposedly makes it possible to not have the disc in your Mac the whole time.
The patch only works with the newest Mac OS X 10.3 (aka Panther) upgrade and not with Mac OS X 10.2.8 Jaguar.
