Unhappy [OT]my IE has been hijacked!

I went on the internet this afternoon, and found that my start page had been altered to Luckysearch.net. I naturally tried to change back to my normal startpage, but it told me my access had been restricted, and that i should contact my system administrator. i already have administrator access, but i still cant find any way to change this. :sour: I already deleted both cookies and temporary internet files and went into internet options via Control panel, but to no avail I dont know how to mod restrictions on users, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

that would be my advice to. but you should also consider creating a seperate user account for surfing the net. set it to user or power user instead of admin so crap like this wont happen.

    k try this

but if you aren't familiar with your registry, pay close attention:

Go to Start=>Run=> type in "Regedit" and hit enter

Go to=>HKEY_CURRENT_USER=>Software=>Microsoft=>Intern et Explorer=> Highlight "Main" (dont open the tree [dont click on the little plus])

Look on the little list on the right and change "Start Page" to whatever of your liking.

I tried it myself, and it works fine, if you follow the directions correctly, it should fix it

the registry is your best friend, if you know how to use it

Keep an eye on mozilla firebird too. It's a beta at the mo with some bugs but is already miles better than IE

With SpyBot S&D run the Immunise stuff

Once you've done that DONT try to alter your start page from your desktop, go into your Control Panel and click on Internet Options, here it will let you change the start page.

After you've immunised with S&D your start page can't be changed unless you do it via control panel, hence these ****e sites cant change it either, plus it blocks alot of ActiveX scripts that aren't so nice to your PC.

If you want your IE properties page back, goto Regedit:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Inte rnet Explorer\Control Panel
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Int ernet Explorer\Control Panel

If there is ANYTHING in either of those key folders, delete them. (Dont delete the folder itself though)

That should restore your IE properties.

I just downloaded Mozilla Firebird today...

it's pretty good, but is slower than IE6, and is missing a lot of good features, like moveable toolbars, proper cookie handling, etc...
I don't like the way it stores cookies either.

It needs more toolbar buttons too, and that search field bugs me.

I'm used to having that image placeholder thing turned off in IE, but Firebird wont let you do that...
    I hate the image placeholder.

No option to have links open in new windows by default. Even when you right click a link, it always opens full screen.
    Annoying.

I could go on and on about what it needs, but at least it's standards compliant
(actually, if you ask me, anything M$ makes becomes the new standard, lol).

It's far from finished but I'll keep using it, although I like the way IE displays the web better

    will look into it, thanks

but all i really need is just a notepad with an address bar, nothing else really bothers me except that most take too long to load or theyre reading through so many dll's and other files that it takes webpages even longer to load

I never noticed Avant takes longer than normal IE. I use it cause it's exactly like IE, except with tabs, skinable, interface changeable, great fav manager, and best of all, it blocks 100% of un-wanted pop ups (however it will allow pop ups that you intended to open, those will be the one u click, avant reconizes those).

No, it’s not. Netscape use Mozilla’s Gecko engine in their v6/7 browsers, then plug it full of AOL crap. (Although, even with the crap, Netscape 6/7 still walks all over IE.) Just get Mozilla instead — it is more regularly updated and doesn’t contain any bloat.

    . . .

Mozilla or Mozilla FireBird are the best browsers these days, in terms of stability, features, and web-standards support. Opera is also a very good browser, although the newly released 7.2 has some quirks in its standards support.
Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Mozilla firebird is a bit buggy but it has useful features and some annoying ones like not showing glow effects > but they might be back in the future. So far not one ad has managed to load whilst I have been using it which is very nice

Get Ad-aware. Great program for removing spyware. And make sure you have restrictions placed on the cookies you accept. Put your security and privacy on medium-high or high.

Also, a good popup blocker can help. Some popups activate scripts that install this garbage, and if they're shut down immediately they won't install.

I know of this app, specifically for hijacking your homepage. There's a bunch of other tools on the site too here's the url:

All of those things you mentioned can be done in Firebird.
have a look around www.texturizer.net/firebird or search the forums at forums.mozillazine.org

Yeah, i figured that out by looking at the tweaks page at Mozilla.org.
Too bad all the little goodies aren't in the GUI...
Installing extensions and editing .js files isn't the way I like to tweak my browser.
All that doesn't change the way cookies are handled though.

Ah well, it's still a functional browser and attractive looking.
I'm waiting for it to get a little more mature though.

The beauty of FireBird is that there is no bloat. You only install what you want to install, and it is very easy to do. Most plugins have their own extension to the config page, too. Much better than farting around in the registry to get IE to behave itself.
Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

I wouldn't consider it "bloat", when it enhances useability.

My IE has been kidnapped a few weeks ago. It disappeared from one day to the next and never came back. But I got an email, that told me to send 3.000.000$ to a bank in a small west african country and they are going to send my IE back.
But I don't have the money by now, so I use Netscape
The kidnappers promieed me to treat the IE good though.

Which IE features do you miss? As a bare-bones download, even FireBird in its beta-state is more flexible than IE in terms of bookmark and toolbar management, auto-complete for forms and passwords, tabbed browsing, and blocking images, popups and cookies. It’s not as stable as IE yet, but in that case just go for the standard Mozilla. I certainly consider both FireBird and the standard Mozilla (SeaMonkey) browsers more “usable” than IE.

Dude, you must be joking about bookmark and toolbar management, and cookie handling.
Blocking images is something any browser can do, and Firebird only integrated one extra option for it, which is about as useful as using sandpaper to wipe your butt.

There is so much yet to be integrated into Firebird compared to IE.
It's only pluses are Tab browsing, standards compliance, popup blocking, a couple cool right click options, and it's not ugly.

    woopdeedoo.

If IE had tabs and standards compliance, there is no way I would even look at another browser.

That being said, Firebird is the only browser I am looking forward to using regularly, once it matures a little more.

    bye-bye

(sheesh, you and peoii so militant against M$)
