    Big Grin High pings..

    Hi guys,

I've just recently got access to 1 of my ISP's game servers.. Which I was happy about, the specs aren't anything great, but I assumed it would be ample for what I was going to set up.

    The server is a..

    PIII 550
    384mb Ram
    running Gentoo Linux

It's meant to be setup as a DDOM 12 player server. I figured this would be ok as Epic say a 600mhz proc gives decent performance for 16 player servers! with a minimum of 256mb of ram.

Ok now If i join the server it shows my ping to be around 60 which is right. But as more people join the ping slowly goes through the roof. When the 10th/11th person joins it starts to get choppy and pings are anywhere upto 150+.

I'm leaning towards it not having a fast enough cpu, but what do u guys think?

You will probably have to limit your server to 8 players.
I have a PIII 550 also but 640 ram and on my 9 player I get a slow server.

I will depend on your upload bandwidth also from your ISP.

well the upload side should be fine, its a 3Gb link between them and their main center. So it looks like it is downto the CPU afterall. I'm wanting to run several servers on one machine. What would u say is the ideal cpu for a 12 player server? (that'll keep the pings low and constant).

    I use a Dual PII 400 with 1 gig mem on a T1 line.

    It has a 20 Player UT2003, UT2003 Duel and 16 Player Q3A.

    Never had a problem.
    Local:
Adsl pings ave 35, Isdn pings ave 55 and Modem pings ave 200 regardless of how many players.

It used to also have a 16 Player CS, but the CS guys complained a bit so we moved them and replaced it with a UT2003 Duel.

this is odd indeed.. I've read that somebody using a Dual Pentium 200 Pro can handle 24 players also.. I was sure a PIII 550 would be adequately powerful.. I'm a bit confused now.

I'm now wondering if it's the server thats setup incorrectly.

    /me scratches head.

If your P3 - 550 is a Slot1 CPU with 512k L2 Cache then you have no problems what so ever.
However if its a Celeron - dump it as you'll be lucky if it handles 4 Players.
