Default Very Serious Issue, game won't even start

There is a serious issue here. UT2K3 was working perfect, then I formatted my drive and installed Windows 98 (I was previously running XP) and reinstalled it and everything it claimed it needed to run, and it does not work. It starts up, then it opens a dialog box and gives me this error:

    UT2003 Build UT2003_Build_[2003-04-07_17.42]

    OS: Windows 98 4.10 (Build: 67766222)
CPU: AuthenticAMD PentiumPro-class processor @ 1002 MHz with 383MB RAM
Video: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 (4403)

Error setting display mode: CreateDevice failed (D3DERR_INVALIDCALL). Please delete your UT2003.ini file if this error prevents you from starting the game.

    History: UD3DRenderDevice::UnSetRes <- CreateDevice <- UD3DRenderDevice::SetRes <- UWindowsViewport::TryRenderDevice <- UWindowsViewport::OpenWindow <- UGameEngine::Init <- InitEngine

There is a serious problem here. I have had my computer inspected by a certified computer technician and he said there is nothing wrong with it and it should run ut2k3 just fine. However it does not. I am really angry at this fact, I look on the box and I have everything required to run the game but it does not. That is a serious violation of False Advertising if there is no way to fix this error.

    Default very serious issue

I've had the same problem for the past few weeks. I would reboot
my system and it would clear up. Only to return later. Now It wont clear at all, it locks up each time. I've played Unreal for about 5 years without many problems until now. I hope you have found a repair. Ive searched all of my files and cannot find a file "UT2003.ini" to work with. Help I'm having withdrawals especially since "invasion " has come aboard....BUTTWART

    Red face

Your UT 2003.ini file is in the System folder. It is labeled UT2003, it's to the right of the UT2003 icon.

Hey hyler, don't go jumping on the false advertising wagon. This game runs fine on a 98 system. Well 98 SE that is, If you have the 98 "first" edition download the update to bring it up to 98 SE specs.

Perhaps the fact that you had XP installed at first has something to do with your problem. Did you do a complete format with a 98/98 SE start-up disc?

Maybe your best bet is to get a new hard drive and start from scratch.

The UT 2003.ini file is in your Unreal Tournament 2003 System folder.

You could try older drivers than the 44.03 .. some people tell about the same error you have, right after upgrading to the 44.03, although it worked fine before....

Do a search in your ut2003 directory. The search parameters are

    *.*ini

Type that exactly. Once you find the ini file delete it, and start ut2003. It is a very stange problem. My next suggestion would be to ensure you have the newest soundblaster drivers since the error indicates a creative device failing to load.

I also searched for this error and found this page

    http://unrealtournament2003.pcgamesz...ch_changes.htm

it explains that this error occured and was fixed on a earlier patch (2136).
