Post DM-Road To Karnak (Working Title)!

    Ok.
Here is my 1st ever map for any game.
I am proud to actaully be pimping my work instead of some1 else's this time and so far i am very pleased with the way my map is going!.

It's about 50% done and should be ready in about 2 weeks.

Basically the map is set in old valley road that went through valley of the kings but was abandoned for years after a heavy rock fall left the way blocked.
Now the Temple and shrine are for the Tournaments!.

Please give feedback and tell me if it's looking good.
I should have more pics up soon bit i still need to do loads more detail indoors.

    Thanx.

The only thing that seems/feels funny to me is the roof ( has the light strips running on the sides ) sections above the pillars.

They seem so thin in the screens. Is there anyway to thicken them up?

    Thanx Helios!.
I Know how u felt. My first few attempts were basically a few cube rooms with light and this is what i was making about a month back aswell.
Then i got help from fellow mappers and learnt how to do terrain and then built into this.....u also learn things as you go and now it's pretty simple.

It's alot easier than it looks once u get stuck in.

I'm just worried about how well the map will flow at the moment as i havn't started thinking bout that yet and more on design and looks!.
Also i just love that Arborelandscape mesh rock pack....i would be lost without that.

    Loosecontroll6,

    Looking very nice. Tightly made.

I was looking for something to critique... couldn't really find anything at this point from just the screens.

For a first map, this looks great.

I probably wouldn't have noticed but Souless Puppet mentioned the thinness of the cielings... I'm 50/50 on it... but the more I look at it, I think I agree. Maybe make them look fatter and hence stronger/more stable.

    Thumbs up

    Yes LC5/6,

You know what I think of this, esp for a first map *ever*. Your `debut` map has changed a lot from the first beta you sent me, and has gone on to become something else entirely.
It paid off to `abandon` those first efforts (which in themselves were still pretty solid compared to a lot first maps), and now you should have pretty decent map when you release it. Then as you get better you can concentrate on other ideas (custom stuff), and fall back on the solid base you gave your self by working on this map so well.

Also you deserve some good feedback as you spend a lot of time pimping/beta testing others maps - even if this map doesn`t appear overly original (by that I mean the egyptian theme) it does look pretty well executed and you show great promise.

Good luck - hope it goes down a storm.

I just wanna make sure this map does play well...(that is what i am most worried about)!.

Thanx for the Comments Sharpfish, it has deffinatley changed alot since my 1st few rooms. I Know the theme isn't very original but i just love Egyptian themed maps!....and i wanna try and make this 1 of the best.

    Big Grin

    Hey LC6,

Now you are a mapper yourself, are you gonna do that chinese theme you kept bugging me to do?

And btw, yeah I meant nothing bad about `theme`, egyptian has a LOT of fans, and if you do indeed make the best so far then great, there have been a couple of *good* ones already and more can be no bad thing.

If someone asked me what theme I loved, I really couldn`t say lol.. I know its not Egyptian or industrial/warehouse but only because of playing UT 1 for many years, this doesn`t mean that it will be overdone to newcommers to 2k3!

Also I should have said it looks good as well compared to most similar themed levels I have seen, you seem to have gone from "nothing" to having the `artistic` eye for a maps, as you admit you now have to get the other side of things done (flow/placement/connectivity etc), I hope you pull it off as this will only encourage you to make more and better maps for us all to enjoy, and I for one know how important good feedback and bad feedback can affect your enthusiasm for map making.

Lookin good man, I would have read the post sooner but been busy and didnt see it.

I like what you have done, did you fix that spot where you could jump through to outside the gameplay area?

It seems to be coming together nicely. Keep me posted and if ya need me again to test it, I'd be happy to

    Keep it up Loose,

"did you fix that spot where you could jump through to outside the gameplay area? "

Do you mean the small stack of rocks? I too saw that but never mentioned it cos I thought he would fix it, but yes make sure thats done (they are not high enough) take into account the speed ability etc that allows higher jumping - so here a blocking volume is the best bet (esp if you can make it look natural with something actually `blocking you`)

    On this pic http://www.photocountry.com/users/11431/Shot00006.jpg
all the way on the left there is a plant. The leaf looks like its going in front of the mouintain, but if it is then its really close to the screen but yet seems its in the back and uh :weird:

    Nice

The ceiling were you have the curving structure and the two pillars needs more support Maybe a combination of the Egyptian statics to make a new design? I remember other pillar like structures that could be used in combination to make some interesting pillars.

The sand should be closer in color to the color of the rocks so it is smooth transition from sand to rock makes it seem it has less of a seam.

I like that you are keeping the ground rather simple in detail. But do not be scared to add more detail in ceiling areas.

People who see many maps are the ones to learn the quickest. So good job. it shows you have looked at many maps and paid attention to details

If you beta it later on if you want me to look at it and suggest a few things PM me

I have fixed the different places you could escape out of with more hidden rock meshes and no speed has been lost yet!.

That plant was nicely planted on a sand dune wich i lowered but forgot to lower plant aswell!....I'll do that.

About the celing...lots are saying that area looks weird and needs more structure to it, so i'll see what i can do.
As with the sand....i'm still playing with lighting and colours atm.

Pleased to see u all think it's looks good so far.

    Thanx.

The walls of the interior parts look very plain, I'd suggest placing some egyption coving around the top and perhaps some protruding decorations. Very good work for a first map though, I love the subtle lighting.

Great looking map, looking forward to this one.

    A minor thing,

+ The sand looks very plain and "untextured" and makes the lighting on it look worse, maybe use a texture with some more detail or color variation in it?

i will be adding more deco like coving and stuff!.
The sand looks much better than that in game and has bad shadows on it wich makes the appearance look bland.
