I managed to se about 12 secs of the actual game, right up until Dominic asks me which path I'd like to take. Then it crashes as usual. The 12 secs I did see ran very smoothly though.
I'm sure the game will perform beautifully if it would just run properly!

The title of this topic should be changed to - STILL BROKEN.

That'd be nice but it's not exactly an option in Windows XP.
So far it looks like this problem is specific to XP users. I hope that narrows things down for Epic.
I just updated my XLive manually to v1.2.038 since the game couldn't be open long enough for an auto-update. It didn't solve the problem but at least it discounts any potential issues from an out-of-date XLive.
Hopefully a fix will come out very soon, this is getting ridiculous. I've had the game for two days and I haven't been able to play it yet.

Repeating:
I have found the time decision of a problem, up to a patch.
Start you game in window mode and when you will got Windows error put it away from desktop, foget about it. Then Alt+Enter and here the Gear of War, it works!

After switching to Windowed mode my game has ceased crashing. Thanks.
Only problem now is the game stutters whenever it's trying to load something in advance (before a cutscene, at a checkpoint). Seen this problem with others and I think there's something flawed in the game code for loading since it's just not very efficient.

Xessive, can you try running in Windowed mode and let us know if it also solves your problem.. Clearly it's non-optimal, but if that works it eliminates a whole slew of non-video related things that could be causing this (WindowBlinds, Security Software, user permissions, etc.)
Thanks

Work-around!
Well, I actually found another work-around.
There was no need to go into windowed mode. When you start the game completely ignore any LIVE stuff and just go for the standard campaign (fastest way to get into the game). Wait until the error happens and the error message appears, this will cause the game to minimize but not close, then simply Alt-Tab back to the game. You'll actually be able to play! You can go back through the menu and do everything you need to do without worrying. At least I did.
Unfortunately I ran into another bug involving the stupid LIVE crap. I was able to update my LIVE and ever since it updated it now refuses to connect at all, giving me an "Unable to connect, error 0x08#####." I was able to connect before, which is how I created my LIVE account to begin with!
Anyway, back to the semi-good news that I am able to actually play but only with a local profile. It's no solution, but it should hold us off until a proper patch is released.
I hope this helps everyone else!

WHen going into windowed mode, it is possibly avoiding the error but it's seems from reports that the same is achieved in fullscreen by alt/tabbing back in and because they error box is already up it doesn't minimize the game again.. basically in those cases the game isn't hanging/crashing it's just displaying an error but still running so... ALT/TAB after the first error (as long as you are in game not in the menus)
