Just a heads up to the OP: the lag is just as bad as it was yesterday and the day before. EPIC did not even try to fix it. This is an event, like the Labor Day weekend, like the All Hollow's Eve weekend, like the Old School Smoke's weekend. It's not a title update. The game runs exactly like it has been running since TU5.
I have been host three times this evening. Two players quit out in the first game, all five in the second, three in the third. I died once in all three games (planted nade on Pavilion). The damage boost for the hammerburst turned my host advantage into a host all-kill switch, permanently flipped on. The host advantage is still there, as formidable as it's ever been. The host simply has more powerful bullets, albeit fewer of them.
What we have here is a bunch of people who are pleased with the fact that their playstyle is currently being more consistently rewarded. And therefore they look upon the entire game in a more favorable light. Everyone does it. I do it. On a good night, Gears of War 2 is a solid game, minus a glitch or two here and there. On a bad night, it's an offensive piece of electronic dog****, an abomination to God and man. *****ing when something isn't going our way, and singing praises when it is is just human nature.
Now give a major change like this a little time for the shine to wear off, and you'll start feeling those old host complaints creeping back up. That's a guarantee. The players will adjust. The same old skill hierarchies will reemerge. And we'll all still be at square one against a competent host.
Personally, I enjoyed playing the new style tonight. I had fun. I've always been a little hammerburst-centric in my play anyway. I do, however, think ten days is a little long (will probably just hop on Modern Warfare 2 when it drops, to let this blow over). It's just not my cup of tea (but it's not the end of the world, either). But what strikes me as funny is that suddenly everything about Gears of War 2 is perfect peaches and cream simply because EPIC tweaked weapon carrying and damage capacities in what are ultimately some fairly minor ways. You folks lauding Gears of War 2 as a now-perfect Xbox experience may, in fact, have convinced yourselves that it is--but not in an intellectually honest way, more in a I-win-more-so-it-must-be-a-better-game way. I give it four, five days max for the other shoe to fall.

See? Perfect example.
I disagree with your assessment of the game. Therefore, I must be a bad guy or a moron or someone who has been rightfully banned from these forums in the past.
Your opinions are pretty terrible, sir. They don't correspond to facts. They correspond to your neurotic, self-centered worldview. You'd make an excellent political commentator. Just pick a side.
What actually happened is that I stopped by tonight so that I could read the event updates. I do the same thing every time as TU or major change rolls out. I checked out some other threads while I was here, saw that people like you tragically misunderstand this anniversary event, and threw my two cents in.
I mean my point is true. It's factually correct. There were no changes to the game that could even conceivably alleviate the underlying (the seemingly fundamental) lag issues in this game.

I am trying to think how to put this so that you will understand. But that's difficult to do.
Just think about this: the fact that you get mad at a game does not mean it's imbalanced. Likewise: the fact that you do not get mad at a game does not mean it's balanced. Your personal feelings do not have anything to do with the actual state of the game. The fact that you seem to think that they do indicates a certain lack of intellectual maturity on your part--of depth, of introspective capability.
This same lack of self-awareness is typical of posts in favor of this event's updates. That's all I wanted to point out. I suppose the fact that people like you cannot, at the moment at least, appreciate certain nuances of that original post is simply in the nature of the enterprise.
At any rate, I'm off to work. I do hope you enjoy your magically fixed game today.

I did read the whole post, just don't want to re-quote it all again.
I understand perfectly where you're coming from man, but I simply have to disagree with you. Although Epic didn't magically fix everything in this game with the tactical tweak, the online experience during day 1 of the event seemed to have a minimalist amount of problems and rage moments that have plagued it since the launch. I can't remember the last time I played an entire night of Gears without my blood pressure rising; I actually enjoyed ALL of my matches tonight.
The only problem I forsee with this is the prevalence of lag as the event dies down, but that's always going to be a problem with this game, and it's one I've accepted as a player, it's just a (unfortunate) part of GoW2.
As you said, I await the other "shoe to fall." I just really have a different feeling about this, a lot different than I've had with any of the TUs. I think Epic stumbled onto something here, and even if it's by "accident," like the shotty duels of Gears 1, it works.
Off to bed soon, wish you all good luck.

TO op:
yes in gow1 i played a lot of warzone in the beginning. and than moved over
to execution because in a way its was more forgiving.
Yet with warzone being introduced/selectable to gow2 again, i simply say this game mode is spot on for me because it suits so well with the new tactical game dynamics.
actually saw players sticking together, reviving each other, moving in two`s or fours..
i was like what!!.
good stuff!
