As for the writing, all you need to do is think about these characters as real people. Everyone needs rest. Soldiers in the thick of it all also have moments of respite where they shoot-the-sh*t (talk) with one another. Any moment that reminds you of peace and calm and no longer having to worry about life or death just for that one moment etc.

Just dropping by to say good luck with the writing. I haven't had a chance to read your RAAM story, but I plan on doing so soon. Its always nice to see writers come by and from what I saw in the thread, the people are impressed. If Cros is in your corner, I think you're doing something extremely well.
