One of the ideas that really truck a chord with me in the community discussion thread is about how veterans of our community can help bring new people into the fold whether it be here in the forums or teaching them the ropes in our games. We'll call this "buddy system" Wingman for now for he purpose of this discussion. I want to use this thread to talk about how me might develop this into a full fledged program. How would it work? Who would volunteer? Let's get it going!
I'll be more than wiling to help new players learn the ropes in Gears. You'd be amazed at what an hour in a private lobby can teach someone. As for how it would work, new members/players could ask if someone would mind helping them, and we could do so at our earliest convenience.
Well to be fair their is only so much we can teach. I would be more then helpful to show people some easy things to improve their game on Gears or possibly UT3. I'd help when it comes to teaching them things as well about different forum features. Difficult to get started and the International Connections could make it slightly difficult to get help to some in more isolated pockets but I could imagine this being a great system if those who were willing to volunteer even did something small like added it to their signature just so new comers could find them. It would definitely make Epic stand out in the gaming world even more then they do now as a strong community. Won't lie first thing I would teach people is how to read the stickies.
I would love to be able to take someone under my wing and show them the ropes
Not to forget how to use the search function too Drudgie. When you say teach them you mean like show them the ropes, or just give them a hand at getting to grips with the controls and pace gears moves at? You could try setting up some kind of Support team something of the kind Microsoft are doing or have done with the Xbox Xperts people from the xbox community are at hand to answer any questions, problems people have about the xbox services, not really sure if im honest what that would require or if it's even possible, but it would make any troubles new Gearheads are having easier to solve or them to figure out.
I'll add my name into the hat at taking someone under my wing. I play basically everyday. I dont think it would be too hard to impliment. Maybe just a dedicated thread to it.
I'd be happy to try and help people. (forums or game) The only problem with helping in a game is that I would have to wait till the summer (I'm in school and the only xbox I have access to is my friends and he just plays halo)
U N E 4 K, I love the concept of a group here that's dedicated to helping out new people, either with getting acclimated to the forums or to the game itself. We could probably segment that in a way where different support people had unique areas of expertise. It's a lot of work obviously to organize in that way, but I think that one is worth exploring.
I would love to have an event (or some kind of list) where me and a couple other forum regs can take people that are looking for a team and play ranked with them. Show them the impact of having a full team of communicating players.
I'd be up for that! Always willing to help others, especially if it means I get to play more Gears
